How to remove unused network drivers?
Posted by: This PC - 09-23-2020, 05:59 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (3)

Actually, i recently solved Wifi not working issue due to missing drivers.

https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/netwo.../#msg53751

Here's the thread (i made this new thread as that was a different issue).
As you can see, i installed many drivers from different user's git repository.

I don't know which drivers is currently being used with my network card. I don't want to mix up my system files with unused drivers.
So i only want to keep the current working driver and remove others safely. How can i do this?

I'm using this device: https://www.enter-world.com/product/usb-...ps-e-w170/

VLC Media Player on LL 5.0
Posted by: Steven Mason - 09-22-2020, 06:31 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

I use VLC media player to play short video clips in various formats (e.g. mpeg, mp4, wmv). I've never had a problem until I upgraded to LL 5.0. At least once almost every day VLC seems to get stuck. It won't play any videos. The pattern seems random. VLC will always play the first video but it might get stuck on the second video and will remain stuck until I reboot or log off and log back on. Or it might get stuck on the tenth video. When it gets stuck it does nothing. The VLC app doesn't open and I don't get any error messages.

When I was running LL 4.X I never had this problem. I don't know if it might be LL 5.0 causing the problem or perhaps VLC media player. The VLC version is 3.0.9.2. I don't know if VLC media player for LL 5.0 is a different version than VLC for LL 4.X.

When I'm playing video clips I'm not multitasking and no other apps are open or running. No internet browser is open. I have half a dozen laptops running LL 5.0 and I have the same problem on each one.

When VLC got stuck I used Task Manager to look at the processes that were running, but nothing jumped out at me. Even when VLC is playing a video normally I can't find a process with the letters "VLC" in it.

Thanks.

I can't get any updates, I copied the log per instructions.

Hopefully someone can help me with a fix, just know I am a novice so please try to explain in simple terms.

Thanks in advance.

  Dell D620 Wi-Fi off
Posted by: psikeyhackr - 09-22-2020, 01:40 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (3)

If I boot from DVD and run Linux Lite live the Wi-Fi light comes on and works.
I installed it to the hard drive because it worked.
But when I boot the installed version the Wi-Fi light does not turn on and
System Information does not detect the Wi-Fi card. Why doesn't the install
version configure itself like the DVD boot?

Removed deprecated GTK2 software, themes - less bloat:

Removed Adobe Flash:

Please don't ask how to install Flash. That would be like asking for the recipe for a deadly poison, then drinking it to see if it worked. Flash is gone. Long live HTML5 Smile  Please note, installing Restricted Extras will also install Flash, hopefully Ubuntu will show some foresight here or we will simply build our own Restricted Extras package.

Updated Grub menu image to transparent, and more color, clearer boot screens when dual+ booting:

SimpleScreenRecorder, Zoom and Microsoft Teams added to Lite Software. Community suggestions:

9 new Wallpapers thanks to the community and especially [member=5059]whateverthing[/member]

Latest Papirus icon theme.
Updated UEFI files for build process.
Fixed notifications bug.

Plus many other tweaks and changes.

Window Theme: Adapta
Icon Theme: Papirus
Font: Roboto Regular

How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.

Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.

Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

UEFI Support link - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/

Details:

Kernel: 5.4.0-48 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.8 )
Firefox: 80.0.1
Thunderbird: 68.10.0
LibreOffice: 6.4.5.2
VLC: 3.0.9.2
Gimp: 2.10.18
Base: 20.04.1

Known Issues:

No prompt to eject Media at the end of the Legacy install, prompt is available at the end of the UEFI install.
Release Notes - not working on first installer slide.
Desktop icons - English support only.
Grub - holding shift down whilst booting in UEFI mode does not bring up the Grub menu (works in Legacy mode), waiting for Ubuntu fix.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. After you install Linux Lite, you can change Grub to show 'Linux Lite':

- Open /etc/default/grub as Administrator.
- Comment out: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` and leave GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite' uncommented.
- Should look like:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite'
#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
- sudo update-grub

You tell me.

Yet to do:

Help Manual to finish, update info and images (will be done for the 5.2 Final).

There is no upgrade to or from RC releases. RC releases are for testing only and it is not recommended to run them as your main or secondary operating system.

Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-5.2-rc1-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://www.balena.io/etcher/ or https://rufus.ie/
In our testing, Etcher and Rufus (for Windows only) have proven to be the most reliable. Etcher is available for Mac, Windows & Linux.

If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)

Minimum Recommended Specs:
1Ghz processor
768mb ram
8gb HDD/SD
VGA screen capable of 1024x768 resolution
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Preferred Specs:

1024mb ram+
20gb HDD/SSD+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

As this is a RC release, there are bound to be bugs etc. Please help make the final stable for other people by participating in this RC. Please report any bugs and feedback in this thread.

Thank you Smile

Jerry and the team.

Why do some progs install to /home by default? e.g Wine, Amule etc...
Posted by: cantagril - 09-21-2020, 04:54 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (4)

Moi again.

OK, so lots things are going right with my new LL installation -  n°5 in this last week Smile...but some things are not so great. I downloaded and installed Amule with help from [member=7109]Moltke[/member] and it runs, jumps, does back flips and is generally doing exactly what it's supposed to BUT I have just discovered that it's installed to /home and that Wine and MT4 also want to join the party.

When I set up the partitions, I was under the impression that as I was using a separate drive to store all my documents and data the /home directory was almost redundant... so I deliberately made the Root directory as big as I could (0n my 30gb mSATA) at 23gb and thought that as I was never going to use it, just 4gb seemed more than enough for /home.  Now I find that half of that has gone and that I'll probably be  running out of room quite soon whilst Root has plenty.

Obviously, I can just make /home bigger and Root smaller but I don't get why this is happening and would rather have all my programmes in one place. Is this unavoidable?...or am I just being dense?

How to install WiFi driver RTL8188EUS_linux_v4.1.4_6773.20130222?
Posted by: This PC - 09-21-2020, 01:04 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (2)

Hi friends, new user here. I've obtained these drivers from cd that came with the wifi card. It works perfectly in windows. But i am unable to setup this in linux lite 4.8. I double click install.sh file and nothing happens (no terminal window opens). Help please!! I can use internet via usb tethering. Thank you.

Edit: I checked the release notes of this driver and it says it supports Linux (kernel 2.6.18 ~ 3.6.6). What should i do now?

  possible to install as desktop
Posted by: maestrobwh1 - 09-20-2020, 03:46 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 on a ThinkPad 11e.  It is fine, although a bit "heavy" at times on resources.

Since Lite is based on Ubuntu, is it feasible to install it as a "desktop" choice rather than wipe or create a separate partition for a complete install?  I.e. add some repos and install specific new packages.

It would be great to have it as a log in choice into a system that already has my application preferences already installed.  I have been a super fan of Linux Lite 4.8.  I do use 5.0 on another machine it is great.
