  How to set (enabled) Firewall to allow Document Scanner to see my N/W'd scanner?
Posted by: GraemeA - 07-15-2020, 01:49 PM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (2)

Hi, I am an absolute beginner with LinuxLite but I have already learned that if I Enable the FirewallD, I then cannot get the default 'Document Scanner' software to see my network connected scanner (part of an Epson WP-4545 MFU). This connection works fine if the firewall is Disabled, but I would like to know how to set the firewall to allow the scanner to work with it Enabled, please.
I have found the guidance on configuring the firewall in the Help Guide, so I know I should set the Configuration to 'Permanent' and the Zone to 'Home', but I have no idea what 'service(s)' the 'Document Scanner' uses. I guessed that it would be 'sane', but when I checked that 'service' for the 'Home' zone and reloaded the firewall it made no difference when I tested the scanner connection; - Document Scanner reports "No scanners detected; Please check your scanner is connected and powered on" (even though it is). Clearly this problem is caused by my inability to configure the firewall to all the scanner through...
Advice please?
Also, I tried to install the Epson 'ImageScan! for Linux' scanner driver for this WP4545 machine (there is a driver dated 2019). So far it does not work, and reports "Could not send command to scanner. Check the scanner status", even with the Firewall disabled so that 'Document Scanner' *can* connect to the scanner. The installation instructions say that SANE must be preinstalled; - is SANE installed by default in the Linux Lite distribution?

  Radeon RX Vega 11 not supported?

Got two identical boxes here with AMD Ryzen 5 3400G, one has a GT 1030 installed and works just fine. The other one, however, is using the integrated RX Vega 11 and doesn't want to boot up. Sad

  Linux Lite 5.0 Running Certain Simple Tasks Extremely Slowly, decent hardware
Posted by: SubtlyInClass - 07-12-2020, 04:53 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

Hello to everyone,

I recently installed Linux Lite 5.0 on an old Dell Vostro 220s with 4GB of RAM at 800 MHz across 2 sticks, a core 2 duo e7400 at 2.8 GHz, and an aftermarket nVidia GT 1030 I put into the top PCI-E slot. The install went fine, the nVidia graphics driver install was a royal pain, but now everything seems to work. I had to revert to the older 390 driver for the GPU driver to not crash Xserver right after logging in. Apart from tor browser, a torrent client, and the nVidia drivers, there is nothing extra on the installation, it is basically fresh. It is also worth noting that I am using this as a home media PC, so the only display output it is connected to is a 4k TV (hence the GT 1030). After I boot, opening programs is fine and so is navigating files and dragging windows around, it's all nice and quick, however the second I try to do something a tiny bit demanding like browsing the web (not even youtube or anything, just the google search results) or playing back a 1080p h.264 video in VLC in fullscreen (with hardware acceleration on mind you), the framerate drops to something like 4 fps. Initially I thought this might have to do with nVidia's hardware video decoding on the GT 1030 not working, but the e7400 shouldn't have any issue with playing back h.264 in 1080p even if hardware decoding wasn't on, and that wouldn't explain why the framerate in the Firefox browsing window was also incredibly low. Also this isn't to do with the network connection being slow, I have a gigabit connection at my house and connect this PC straight to the router via ethernet, I got download speeds of 27 MiB/s (~240 Mb/s) while downloading a file.

Anyways, thanks to whoever read all the way to here, my question is how can I fix this? Being that this is a home media PC, I would love it if at an absolute minimum I could play back 1080p h.264 files smoothly, and ideally I'd like to be able to watch web video like YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, or Netflix just fine as well. Is this a hardware problem, could the CPU be throttling due to a worn out thermal paste layer? Or is this more likely to be a software problem to do with video output or drivers or compatibility or something? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to anyone in advance.

  Wireless USB adapter not working since last update (july 2020)
Posted by: Joe321 - 07-12-2020, 04:45 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (13)

Hello,

Since my last update of Linux Lite (3 days ago) my Wireless USB adapter (TL-WN722N) doesn't work anymore. It seems not to be recognized by the system and the green LED (on top of the adapter) doesn't turn on anymore.
The laptop built-in wifi still works though (but signal is pretty poor due to location (hence the use of external adapter)).
I tried to update the driver but "software & updates" tells me:" No additional drivers available."

I tried it with another computer (Asus) running the same version of Linux Lite on which I haven't done any updates for a month or so and the USB adapter is recognized and works fine.

My system is

-Version-
Kernel : Linux 4.4.0-186-generic (x86_64)
Compiled : #216-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 1 05:34:05 UTC 2020
C Library : Unknown
Default C Compiler : GNU C Compiler version 5.4.0 20160609 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.12)
Distribution : Linux Lite 3.8
-Current Session-

User Name : joe (Joe)
Home Directory : /home/joe
Desktop Environment : XFCE 4
-Misc-
Uptime : 1 hour, 30 minutes
Load Average : 0.05, 0.19, 0.25

Here is the output of "sudo lsusb" (with the USB adapter plugged in) if that helps:

Code:

When I unplug it and run the command again, the line with "Atheros Communications, Inc ..." isn't there anymore.
Thank you in advance for your help.

  Problem with Videocard and Wifi adapter drivers
Posted by: Cuc Cu - 07-11-2020, 01:39 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (7)

Hi guys,

I'm a newbie to Linux and recently just install Linux Lite 5 on my old Alienware M17x laptop. Everything seems fine after the installation but when I followed the guide to update the drivers for graphic card and wifi adapter then having problem with booting. The weird thing is everything works just fine at the beginning without update the drivers, I can get wifi connection except the speed is kinda slow for my regular speed when I use with Windows. Could you guys please help me out with it or any recommendations for what I need to do now ? I can just ignore updating the drivers and keep using it this way but I wanna make the internet connection faster. Any help would be appreciated !

  Installing Linux Lite 5.0 on a Dell Precision T1700 and NVidia GK107
Posted by: Şerban S. - 07-10-2020, 07:20 AM - Forum: On Topic - No Replies

Hello everybody!
As I said before, I moved on a different machine.
I will be updating this post, as I gather new info on how Linux Lite 5.0 (or higher! Smile ) works on this machine.
For now, I will only post here the output of the inxi -c 0 -ACdGMNSz command so you can figure out what kind of machine this is and get inspired on what works and how.

Code:
serban@T1700:~$ inxi -c 0 -ACdGMNSz

  dev-links: cdrom,dvd
  Features: speed: 48 multisession: yes audio: yes dvd: yes rw: none

I also uploaded the data on the Linux Lite HW Database so people can get a reference on Linux Lite performance.
The only trouble I had was actually caused by my low level practice with booting and installing UEFI kits. It took me some 40 - 80 minutes to figure out the exact steps of the boot process.
From what I can say now, everything goes FLAWLESSLY.
Unfortunately, thorough tests, require a huge amount of time since I need to test many scenarios.
From what I could gather so far:

  1. RAM consumption with OpenShot rendering a 720p HD video = 1600 MB;
  2. Video used: NVidia GK 107 with 430 driver, worked with 37 FPS;
  3. Video used: NVidia GK 107 with XOrg driver, worked with 31 FPS;
  4. OpenShot (same as above) + Chrome, 15 documents = 2700 MB RAM;
  5. CPU load, never maxed (went at about 65%);
  6. SWAP = 0. I belive this is mostly due to the 240 GB SSD.
  7. Partitioning: GPT.
There is still a huge amount of work to do here. A quick overview:
Three NVidia drivers to test: 340.108; 390; 435.
The Intel® HD Graphics 4600 (need to set it as primary display, then see what happens next, even remove the GeForce GT 630).

Hope this will help people make a good choice and figure out WHY Linux Lite is great.
I guess it worths mentioning that my applications installation script, remained the same as for LL 4.8 on Lenovo ThinkPad T400.
The only problem I had is FSLint since it lacks a version compatible with the new components in Linux Lite 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04.
All other User Apps (packages) (about 100) work fine.

I am very happy Linux Lite is so highly flexible! Smile
Thanks Jerry, send my gratitude to all the team! Smile

Best regards! Smile

  Failed to intstall mkusb
Posted by: pingball57 - 07-08-2020, 08:58 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (4)

I'm wanting to make a live USB to recover my other T--s--up laptop. Tried to follow the 'help' tutorial to create a persistent live USB. Following the commands to download & install mkusb I seem to have completed the addition of the repository but the second command results in the following return:
-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo apt install --install-recommends mkusb mkusb-nox usb-pack-efi
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package mkusb
E: Unable to locate package mkusb-nox
E: Unable to locate package usb-pack-efi

(Command was copied pasted directly from tutorial.) Now what do I do ??? ??
