Integrated webcam produces videos with awful noise - using guvcview
Posted by: Anais - 05-28-2020, 04:26 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (2)

Hello everybody  Smile,

I am quite new to linux lite (using linux mint before) and I have a soundproblem with my integrated webcam, don't know if I am in the right place here. I am using guvcview as a software tool. My first attempts to record a video were quite successful, but ever since then, I get an awful noise as a result - as if the camera would now record very directly my computer's fans noise (I hope you get what I mean, I am German...). You can't even listen to the records :-( - sorry, I would not bother you with this if I would not have tried EVERYTHING to solve the problem. Yes, after my two initial records, I did try to improve the sound a little in general on the guvcview board, which may have caused the change?, although I tried to put it back to default afterwards. Does anyone have any idea? - Did I brake my webcam :-(?

Any recommendation will be greatly appreciated
Anais

install brave browser from terminal under limited account
Posted by: Matthew Cohen - 05-27-2020, 02:46 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (6)

Brand new to linux and I can't remember how to install software while running under a non admin account. My admin's name is billy-johnson but running

sudo -u billy-johnson apt install apt-transport-https curl

just prompts me for the sudo password for my current account (which doesn't exist because my current account is a limited account not a administrators)

I don't see any option in the mouse settings area about how to change this.  Thanks

(I keep hitting it accidentally while typing on my tiny netbook)  Smile

How do I access the window that opens on startup (if I closed it) w/o a restart?

I'd like to set a system restore backup point, is there any way to do this without the first screen that pops up in Linux Lite?

I installed Linux Lite yesterday, and I've already managed to "break" my taskbar
Posted by: Peter Van Horn IV - 05-25-2020, 11:55 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

I was trying to customize my taskbar and now it is shifted all the way to the left side, including my clock and battery percentage.  I tried to look up info online and only got answers that didn't help.  I got answers like: "use a separator" or "make sure automatically increase length is selected".  Those answers make sense, but I already have all that stuff set.

for example:
-I do have a separator set up just before the clock (to the the left of the battery area)
(no matter where I put the separator, it doesn't help)
-I do have "automatically increase length selected in panel options (turning it on or off doesn't help)

ps- in the past when I had issues like this, I'd just reinstall the entire OS, but I'd very much like to make this work without a flippin' reinstall.  Just about every linux distro i've tried before gives me all kinds of problems like this, or something else.  I'm trying to set up this computer for a friend, but am now wondering if that's a good idea, if it breaks on me day one.

Thanks

Edit- I fixed it.  I just needed to try everything under the sun, but it now works.  I wish that things like this were more clear on how to use it on Linux distros
