Brightness Issue on HP - Dv6
Posted by: JordanGfx - 02-25-2020, 06:03 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

Hello Guys,

I have an old dell dv6 laptop, all working well apart from the brightness graphic would slide up or down with the hotkeys but brightness would not change.

So I looked through all your threads on fixing the brightness control issue, i tried the fix where i add the app called brightness and add an entry to the start up applications, with the command that was something like xbrightness -20 or whatever value.

This did nothing.

So i then did the fix where i added the file called '20-intel.conf' to a certain folder and rebooted (with some commands in there). This actually made my brightness permanently more dim which was much easier on the eyes, but still impossible to alter up or down after this point.

So then it tried the fix in this link and this sucessfully updated the grub file: once i added the new commands:

https://www.debugpoint.com/2016/10/2-way...ntu-linux/

Then when i rebooted my brightness was stuck on MAX and the slider wont move at all now, also the GUI based brightness app i then installed from this link but appears nowhere on the system, so maybe only works with AMD graphics cards or not this version of linux?

Could someone please help me in the right direction?

I've tried to now undo all these steps and go back to the 20-intel.conf method to atleast lower my brightness so i can use my laptop without it keeping me awake all night, but even that wont work now and i dont have a snapshot from the fresh install.

Will I have to reformat and re-install all over again ?

Poor first time experience of Linux Lite so far, but everything else is amazing and it has worked wonders on reviving my wifes old laptop so would love some advice as love everything else about this Distro of linux so far!! Smile

New LL user, actually new to Linux :-)
Posted by: ridenotwalk - 02-24-2020, 01:08 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (2)

New LL user just starting my journey in the Linux world.

I've been using computers since the Apple 2E and BBC at school, even had a MicroBee at home when I was a kid.
Thing is I've never really looked into how computers work or how they do what they do, more been a user of software and that's about it. I was more interested in mechanical things (bikes, cars, and trucks mostly) and making them go fast.

Fast forward to recently and I've fallen into a job at work that in some parts means I deal with computers on a deeper level using Win and Linux mostly so I've taken the step of starting to learn how things work and how to make them work. I'm certaly a noob of noobs in this regard but I'm learning everyday.

Up until about 4 months ago I didn't really know what Linux was, now I have 2 distros working, one LL 3.X on a 15yo Toshiba laptop (512Mb, 40Gb, 32bit) and another dual booting Win10/LM19.3 on a recent HP all in one desktop.

Thanks for letting me in and maybe one day I'll be able to give something back (might be along while tho ;-)  )

No WiFi - LL 4.2 UEFI
Posted by: ridenotwalk - 02-24-2020, 12:45 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (8)

I have a bit of a problem with LL 4.2 UEFI not seeing my WiFi which means I can not get onto the www or any other network.
Info/outputs are at the very bottom of this post.

Using the very good info on this thread I have installed LL4.2UEFI on an external HDD that I recycled from an older laptop and so far it seams to be running spotty dog apart from the network issue I'm having. I guess you could say that I am dual booting Win10/LL4.2UEFI
I've tried LL4.8 in BIOS as this laptop can do legacy mode but still the same problem exists.
Problem also exists when using both versions of LL via live USB
I haven't tried an earlier version of LL yet but that is on the cards if I can't find a solution.

I do have an earlier version (3.X IIRC) of LL running on a 15 yo laptop and this doesn't have the problem so I copied all the network info over into this laptop with no joy.

To me it looks like LL on this laptop is not picking up the network card/adaptor so maybe drivers are missing however with no WiFi to search for what is needed I am not sure of the next step to take so I can resolve.

I'm currently search forums (mostly Ubuntu related forums so far) etc for info that may lead me in the right direction and wondered if anyone here might be able to help point me in the right direction.

Passage win7 vers LL portable 11 ans d'âge
Posted by: nev fisch - 02-23-2020, 11:00 AM - Forum: French [French] - Replies (4)

systemd-analyze time
Startup finished in 6.555s (kernel) + 7.394s (userspace) = 13.950s
graphical.target reached after 7.311s in userspace
Quelques reprises en français avec l'éditeur de menus. Quid à la prochaine mise à jour?
Longue vie à LL.

  Python2 out of 20.04

Ubuntu will not be including Python2 in 20.04

The first victim is Cherrytree, the note taking app in Lite Software. So now we need a replacement for it. Any ideas?

New to Linux, looking for user docs
Posted by: edspyhill05 - 02-22-2020, 10:43 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (5)

I just installed Linux Lite on an old PC (not too old).  I'm starting a serious transition from Windows 10.  I need to move several applications over, a password manager, VPN software, a few other baseline apps.  I'll worry about user files later.

Question: Can I user any basic Linux how-to book with Linux Lite?  Looking for a basic overview of Linux.

Thank you,

Ed

Keyboard set to wrong country? Keys aren't what they're supposed to type
Posted by: bartblommaert - 02-22-2020, 06:05 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

I assume this is a software issue

Regular keys seem to work. Even AZERTY

But the 'at' key for e=mails doesn't work. And as you can tell e=mail also malfunctions

And there's other like exclamation mark

Dutch is available, but only Netherlands Dutch, which uses a  completly different layout (QWERTY for starters)

Not Belgian Dutch

  vlc media player
Posted by: Marty - 02-21-2020, 05:58 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

vlc will not recognize the cd. the cd is mounted and the music files show up on the drive but when vlc opens and i click on the devices icon the files do not transfer to vlc media player. I can move the files to my music file but i have to input all album info. What am I doing wrong. I though vlc would get all the album info automatically.
