  Running HTML5 online games
Posted by: Calin Musceleanu - 02-02-2020, 07:45 AM - Forum: Games Support - Replies (3)

Hi there!
I'm facing some issues with a game that I'm playing in browser. The game is Forge of Empires, which was previously based on Flash. As Flash will no longer be supported starting with December 2020, the developers switched to HTML5 platform.
However, the game runs very slow, many times the screen is freezing for several minutes, which is quite annoying.
I'm using Chrome web browser.
Is there any tweak that I could do to make this game run faster?
Thanks in advance!

  Foxit Issues
Posted by: ejc - 02-01-2020, 12:29 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I have an issue I do not recall having on other systems
when i want to annotate a file, i am usually allowed to select the "note" tool and then just click in the margin wherever I want to stick a note. With Foxit on LL I am obliged to first select this option (add a note) from the menu or to type Ctrl + N before I can stick a note somewhere, each time i stick a note.

It would be extremely nice if someone could adapt PDF-XChange Viewer to LL; from my experience it is just as light as Foxit on low tech machines running Win7. It has a plus on Foxit which is that one can export his comments/pop-up notes. To be also allowed to export the list of bookmarks with the relevant page where they are assigned would be fantastic, since bookmarks can be used as a place to store the keywords related to the topic on the page.

  Desktop customization issues
Posted by: ejc - 02-01-2020, 11:02 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Hello,
I notice that when moving an file on the desktop, if i try to let ca 1 cm or a bit less close to a folder, it get absorbed into it. Anyway to change that?
Also, how can I dissociate the icons and the desktop grid? Let's say I arrange the icons on my desktop and i want them to remain where they are? or just the bin let's say? is it related to the updates or there is a way to dissociate them?

LL 3.8 in persistent mode won't boot
Posted by: Moltke - 01-31-2020, 10:25 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life and a wondeful 2020! Smile

Today I created a LL 3.8 Live USB with persistence enabled using rufus, I've done this with other distros and they work just fine. But when presented with the boot screen and hit Start Linux Lite nothing happens and the countdown restarts. Pressing tab to configure boot parameters I removed quiet so I could see  any error which I did see

Code:
/casper/vmlinuz ... invalid parameter: No such file or directory.
So this is what is preventing the OS to start. I tried a few combinations but none worked. Thing is the file is there but not sure what the problem is.  Also, I noticed there's a separate dir in the USB called casper-rw and can't access its contents, might that be the problem?
This is the contents fo the isolinux.cfg

Code:
# MENU HIDDEN
# MENU HIDDENROW 8
MENU WIDTH 78
MENU MARGIN 15
MENU ROWS 8
MENU VSHIFT 7
MENU TABMSGROW 13
MENU CMDLINEROW 13
MENU HELPMSGROW 16
MENU HELPMSGENDROW 29

label live
  menu label Start Linux Lite
  menu default
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
  append  file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper persistent initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --

label xforcevesa
menu label Start Linux Lite in safe mode
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
append  file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper xforcevesa nomodeset persistent initrd=/casper/initrd.gz ramdisk_size=1048576 root=/dev/ram rw noapic noapci nosplash irqpoll --

label check
  menu label Check Install Media
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
  append  boot=casper integrity-check persistent initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --

label memtest
menu label Run memtest (memory tester)
  kernel /isolinux/memtest
  append -

label hd
menu label Boot the first hard disk
  localboot 0x80

label restart
        MENU LABEL Restart
        COM32 reboot.c32

I think editing this file might do the trick but not sure how or what to change though. Any help/advice is great appreciated. Thanks in advance for your answers Smile

got bored and used the Terminal to see if my desktop PC's are UEFI or BIOS.
Posted by: kissbaby3 - 01-31-2020, 08:57 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (8)

today i was just surfing google and wondered to my self, just for fun, if my desktop PC's are either UEFI or BIOS , found this to copy and paste int toe terminal , without the quotes

"  /sys/firmware/efi "

if a desktop PC is NOT UEFI , it will say something like " bash: /sys/firmware/efi: No such file or directory" , which would mean that both of my desktop PC's are bios.

am i right ?. just asking to make sure, i know how to get into and look another way , just wanted a quicker way to tell, ha ha . i like playing with the linux terminal ......

hugs

Installation alongside with Windows 10 only boots Windows
Posted by: Patomas - 01-31-2020, 03:02 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (10)

First time installing Linux Lite alongside Windows 10. Everything goes well until I reboot then it boots directly Windows 10. I have disabled SecureBoot and changed boot to allow both legacy and UEFI. When I installed Linux Lite, I picked /dev/sda1 as the boot device. I switched Windows Boot Manager to the bottom of the options to choose boot from but that didn't work. I don't see an 'ubuntu' option when I sue bcdedit. I tried EasyBCD 2.4 to try and repair my boot but it seems that it's a commercial product now. I'm stuck. Can you help me move a little? Cheers

  Office suites
Posted by: ejc - 01-30-2020, 05:27 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

Hello,

I am working on a word file, only text (no tables, no pics), unilingual (english), of 75 pages that includes 300 footnotes.
On Win7 (still alive and kicking) installed on a laptop with just 4 Go RAM, it functions smoothly. At my university library, on a machine which has win 10 and 8 Go of RAM, it would slow down and get stuck for a few seconds during automatic saving, and on Libre office on LL, it took about 60 secunds to open the file to start with (does not happen on either win7 or win10 as used with the machines described above).
Any suggestion for the future and how to be able to get rid of Win7 ?

Regaining a minute of boot time on your HDD
Posted by: bonnevie - 01-30-2020, 03:54 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (3)

Recently I noticed that my boot time went from 1:17 to 2:25 for no reason since I didn't change anything except upgrading Linux Lite.
When I ran

Code:
systemd-analyze
and
Code:
systemd-analyze blame
I found out that a Ubuntu service called motd-news.service (motd stands for Message Of The Day) was entirely responsible for it.
http://i.imgur.com/TkyWUYw.png
Last time I checked, Dec. 15, 2019, it wasn't slowing down my boot-up time.
http://i.imgur.com/MRfentK.png

motd-news.service has its use for people running servers. Read
https://www.ostechnix.com/how-to-disable...tu-server/
and
https://ma.ttias.be/what-exactly-being-s...untu-motd/
to learn more about it and some related privacy issues but i won't get into that.  These links explain a simple step to disable motd-news.service in its config file. I'd rather have you read it than me explaining it  Smile  so you decide what's best for you.
Since I run an old single-core machine, I want to give it every bit of help to make it start as fast as it can!  That's why I chose Linux Lite in the first place.
After modifying the related config file, my boot time is now back to what it was as you can see in my screenshots above.

PS: needless to say, the boot time gain on a SSD will be less than on a HDD.
