How do I find the GPU temperature of an Intel card using command-line?
Posted by: m654321 - 09-14-2019, 10:53 AM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (7)

I sometimes use the 'sensors' with/without the 'watch'  command in terminal to check on CPU temperatures. On the same machine, I'd like to check GPU temperatures - I can find info on this for nvidia GPUs on the web, but not Intel ones. The Dell Lattitude D630 in question (my daily driver - see signature) has an Intel card - details of its video card are contained in the following:

Code:
mike@D630:~$ sudo lshw -C display
[sudo] password for mike:
  *-display:0
       description: VGA compatible controller
product: Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary)
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
       version: 0c
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
       configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
       resources: irq:27 memory:f6e00000-f6efffff memory:e0000000-efffffff ioport:efe8(size=8)
  *-display:1 UNCLAIMED
       description: Display controller
product: Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (secondary)
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2.1
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.1
       version: 0c
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list
       configuration: latency=0
       resources: memory:f6f00000-f6ffffff

Using command-line, how can I get the GPU temperatures?

  Can't write to new drive
Posted by: timbuck2 - 09-13-2019, 05:15 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (1)

Installed a new sata SSD and can't write to it.

Partitioned with fdisk
Made the ext4 filesystem with mkfs.ext4
Created the mount point under /mnt
Chmod 777 on the mount point for full permission
Edited /etc/fstab to add the drive
Brought in the drive with mount -all

It works and the drive is mounted...but I can't write to it.  What can I try to fix this?

*Edit*  Sorry, it is fixed.  I redid the steps and now it is ok.

Digimend drivers for graphics pads - anyone installed them before?
Posted by: lintek - 09-11-2019, 10:49 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

I just purchased a Huion Inspiroy H430P graphics pad.  Digimend (https://digimend.github.io/) has drivers for cheaper pads to run on Linux.  I was wondering if anyone has installed them for their graphics pad before?

I am a bit confused on the process.

can't connect to wifi "device not ready"
Posted by: minesheep - 09-11-2019, 07:06 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

Sometimes after suspending my LL 3.8 32bit laptop wifi get's grayed out to on state. I can't connect to wifi because there is no wifi networks. After turning wifi off and on by a hardware switch it says "device not ready" I have tried to

  1. Suspend again
  2. Hibernate
  3. turn wifi off and on with software
Rebooting fixes it, but can I force it to reload. This seems to be a software problem because it will not get fixed by hibernating.

Hi, when I try to run the Install Updates program, I get this message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

This has never happened before. Can anyone help?
Thanks.

  wi-fi list question
Posted by: Abw - 09-08-2019, 11:44 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

Hi everyone, I don't think this has ever been asked before. I am helping a friend who keeps connecting to the wrong wi-fi network (the unsecured neighbour's) So, I'd like to know if it is possible to force the network manager to connect to one wi-fi network only and also hide all the wi-fi list except the one that it should be connected to?
Any step by step would be appreciated.

  Donations: Core or the Infrastructure?
Posted by: MS - 09-08-2019, 07:30 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (6)

Nothing will keep rolling without money. Time is money. Ability is money. Creators of solid Linux distributions offer a lot of their time, as well as the exclusive technical skill, to make and maintain what they share ideally for free. Eventually, even if work upon the project could be considered free of charge, subsidiary costs come into play, such as even hosting and maintaining a website. This is when the case of donations come into place.

Nonetheless, no man can do a world alone. Solitary operating system could be a technological wonder, but if nobody uses it and effectively, if there are no valid contents created for it, it is as good as a souvenir.

In the perfect world, balance is critical. We need capable operating systems that smoothly run worthy applications. But it takes time and ability to make and maintain a good piece of software as much as it does in terms of the operating system. Which brings us to the question of limited resources to be possibly spent either on donating to the 'Core', by which I mean the operating system - or the 'Infrastructure', by which I mean all the applications meant for users, in order to be able to make use of the operating system.

If you were to decide where to make the money go, which one would you choose, the 'Core' or the 'Infrastructure'?

Sound Settings: says speakers unavailable but headphones plugged in
Posted by: m654321 - 09-08-2019, 06:33 AM - Forum: Sound - Replies (26)

I've just installed LL3.8 (32-bit) on a 12-year-old laptop (Packard-Bell MX37 model AJ300), given to me recently.
However, I'm able to hear sound (e.g. playing a music DVD using VLC media player) only with headphones plugged in; when the headphones are unplugged there isn't any sound coming out of the laptop's inbuilt speakers.

Clicking on the volume icon in panel to show the Output Devices (within Sound Settings), it shows "Speakers (unavailable)" but "Headphones (plugged-in)".

Using terminal:

Code:
marie@EasyNote-MX37:~$ alsamixer -c0

gives this:
https://imgur.com/a/ijAcLZT    (also includes sound card info)

How do I fix this "speakers unavailable" issue, as the manual indicates this laptop has inbuilt speakers.
Many thanks in advance for your feedback.
