Additional Drivers Question

When I check for additional drivers, there's an option for "amd64-microcode firmware" or "do not use device". I chose "do not use device". Is it safe to use this driver? I'm assuming it is safe to use or else it wouldn't show up in the Additional Drivers box. Can anyone give me some advice on this? Thanks.

Canoscan N650U made obsolete by LL3.4?

I've had my N650U for a long time and it's always been perfectly OK for me. I've never got it to work in Ubuntu, though, and a lot of derivatives, but it has worked in Linux Mint and in Linux Lite, which I adopted at 3.2. Now I'm up-to-date with 3.4 I'm back to googling for solutions that actually work.
Checking at http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html gave this info:
Model Interface USB id Status Comment Backend Manpage
CanoScan N650U/N656U USB 0x04a9/0x2206 Complete plustek (0.52) sane-plustek
Using sudo sane-find-scanner produced this:
>could not fetch string descriptor: Input/output error
>could not fetch string descriptor: Input/output error
>found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x2206) at libusb:003:002
and sudo scanimage -L gave me "No scanners were identified."
I've checked the presence of the stated backend and all seems to be in order and lsusb identifies the device too, but no connection can be made to it, it seems.
I've also checked that the scanner does still work and on an older laptop it still does, so not a hardware issue.
If the worst comes to the worst I can revert to 3.2 - but I really like the upgrade - or I could have a go at a VB version of a suitable distro, but both seem rather heavy going given that the scanner worked fine before I did the upgrade.
I've seen enough of scanner Q&As to know that the answer is rarely clearcut or universally applicable but I would be very grateful for any suggestions. Well, not quite ANY perhaps!
I live in hope!

Editing "Terminal" entry in Whisker Menu has no effect
|

## What I would like to achieve:
I'd like my Terminal menu entry to not just launch "lxterminal", but launch "lxterminal --geometry=120x50 -e /usr/bin/fish -l".
Issuing the quoted command from a (Bash) terminal yields the expected result (i.e. a new terminal opens with fish as the shell, with the terminal's size set to 120x50 characters).
## What I've tried
First I did what worked so far both under LXDE and GNOME: copy /usr/share/applications/lxterminal.desktop to ~/.local/share/applications, then edit "TryExec" and "Exec" to contain the command quoted above. Ater several logouts and re-logins, and several attempts at "xfdesktop --reload", the Terminal launcher (or whatever it's called in Whisker Menu terminology) works as usual.
Then I used "Edit Applications" to insert the aforementioned command into the Terminal entries "Command" field. Still no result, "Terminal" works as is it did before.
After some DuckDuckGoing on the topic, I tried adding "X-XFCE" to the .desktop file in the Category line, to no avail.
## Possible related "symptom"
I've installed gedit, and it works just fine, it shows up in Whisker Menu under Accessories. But in Edit Applications, the Accessories category contains no entry for gedit. (I seriously think now that Whisker Menu or something related is really messed up.)
Any ideas? What did I miss?

Updating a USB

Hi, I'm running 2.8 on my notebooks & "old faithful" very happily. They all update, they all talk to my printer - my daughters are happy to use 2.8, all is rosy! I'm working on the, "if it ain't broke don't fix it ideology these days". I do have a silly question though about running 3.4 on a USB. As always, I like a good play so I've put 3.4 onto a USB to have a play around with. I'm hoping to use the USB version just for banking - thinking it's a safer way of doing things - just having it in isolation. My question is around updates - I've tried to find the answer & have got a bit confused, so, why is there no need to update a live version running just from USB?
