LL3.2 repository puzzle
Posted by: Richard B - 01-23-2017, 10:22 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (4)

I'm trying to understand why I am getting apparently inconsistent results in terms of success or failure when attempting to update LL3.2 just after install. From previous attempts I believed that the problem related to the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxlite.list

Separate installations of 64bit LL3.2 were made from the same USB stick in two newly formatted partitions on a Del XPS M1330  (Intel Core2 Duo CPU with 2GB RAM).
In both cases update during installation was not chosen.

Installation in sda1
Not sure if Internet was connected during install. but doing updates during install was definitely not selected.
After install did updates using Menu > Install updates >Agree to get update list > Listed 179 items > Click Update > Downloading ... > Installing > Update window vanishes > Eventually successful completion reported.

After this, /etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxlite.list contained
[tt]
deb http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite/ citrine main
[/tt]

Installation in sda3
Not connected to Internet during install. After install,  /etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxlite.list contained
[tt]deb http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite/ xenial main[/tt]

WITHOUT an internet connection did Install Updates from welcome screen and entered password.
Clicked Yes to (try to) "fetch the updates list". Get "No updates available" - fair enough!

Connected wifi. Again, from welcome screen did Install updates and entered password.
Clicked Yes to (try to) "fetch the updates list"
It started to download then said "Error - coudn't fetch the package cache information lists"

Tried sudo apt-get update
Got messages ending with:
[tt]
Reading package lists... Done
W: The repository 'http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite xenial Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Data from such a repository can't be authenticated and is therefore potentially dangerous to use.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
E: Failed to fetch http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite/di...4/Packages  404  Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.[/tt]

Edited  /etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxlite.list  to contain
[tt]deb http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite/ citrine main[/tt]

Re-ran  sudo apt-get update  - seemed happy now.

Ran Updates from welcome page - successful now.

Installation media
A check on installation media (mounting iso image) showed  /etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxlite.list to contain
[tt]deb http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite/ citrine main[/tt]

So how, when and in what circumstances did the "citrine" get replaced by "xenial" on the sda3 installation?

No sound and other quirks after installing SSD
Posted by: erve02d0 - 01-23-2017, 05:28 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (7)

Sorry if this is in the wrong subforum, but...

I have been using LL 2.8 on my old Dell: Core i5 2450M, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB hdd. It's been working fine but I felt like upgrading to an ssd. So, I bought an ssd (Kingston 120GB), installed that, and installed LL 2.8 again, no problems there. Here's what's happened:

- startup time improved, as expected
- shutdown is possibly slower. Clicking shut down evokes no reaction, then shutdown begins 30 sec later, and the computer shuts down fast.
- chromium (which I had been using prior to ssd installation) took 30 sec to start.

Another more serious quirk is with youtube - it doesn't work at all. If the video loads at all, there is no sound. Figured I'd try using the awful Firefox browser, same result. Installed Chrome, same result. What is happening? Putting the hdd back seems very attractive right now.

How do I install Opera browser without corrupting Linux Lite?
Posted by: JES49 - 01-23-2017, 04:24 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (7)

I am new to Linux and recently installed Linux Lite 3.2.

When I installed Opera browser using .deb file from Opera web site, I found that the menu option "Install Updates" no longer worked. I would get the error message "Failed to execute command "/usr/scripts/updates-gui" (no such file on directory)". I know that the Opera install caused the problem because I reinstalled Linux Lite and kept testing "Install Updates" while modifying the system to my liking.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong and how I can install Opera cleanly?

Thank you.

I can not change the brighness on by HP Pavilion laptop
Posted by: MoonLight - 01-23-2017, 11:26 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

Hello.
I cannot change the brightness on my laptop, it is very dark, and i can hardly see what's on the screen.
I have the latest linux lite (I updated it from the previous version via the updater.
My laptop is Hp Pavilion (about nine years old).
The functuion button with the brighten or darken button don't respond (so I cannot change the brightness)

Here what happens when I start my laptop:
The splash screen (the first screen that appears- with the feather on the yellow background) it first appears very bright and after a second it dims down. and that's how I see everything after linux lite is up.

I tried the power settings, I don't find a way to make the screen brighter. Please help.
Thank you.
