My friend has been trying to get me to start learning how to program in C and i was surprised to find that the gcc compiler was installed by default in Linux Lite. How good is that!
Can anyone suggest some decent 'free' online C programming tutorials?

Hi all.
Just fixed a friends laptop which I had installed ll2 on several years ago and presented to her, she had a power outage and no battery so corruption was the result, this may be set as default in 3, have not installed it on anything yet to look, have only recently downloaded the iso, would it not make sense to set this parameter as it would then be more like Windows as it would run fsck on boot whenever there was a problem.
Cheers.

| Unable to start live 2.8 from USB |

Not sure what's going on but whenever I try to boot from a 32-bit live 2.8 USB I get the error shown in the pic below.
Doesn't matter if I use Startup Disk Creator or Unetbootin, same message, tried safe mode etc..
Tried various USB sticks, all which test ok with H2Testw and work perfectly with LL-3 put on them.
Live dvd of 2.8 booting via a USB dvd drive works fine.
Md5 checks out ok.
The top entries about ACPI PCC probe failing & the 2 below it have always appeared as far as I can remember, along with the rectangle behind those messages.
The BusyBox & initramfs are the point at which it stops loading.
It does show the feather & progressbar for a few seconds like it's loading as normal then borks at the message.
Several websearch results say failed install media is the culprit but I don't believe this is the case as the same USB sticks work fine with LL-3 on them.
Live USB's created while on a new, updated install of 2.8, not made persistant, makes no diference if they are, tried creating new msdos partition table via GParted, reformatting, deleting contents without reformating, leaving contents & clicking Yes to All when Unetbootin asks to overwrite etc. etc..
Any ideas?
Thanks

| Kernel Vulnerabilities in Ubuntu 16.04 |

Is this a problem in LL 3.0? http://news.softpedia.com/news/canonical-patches-seven-linux-kernel-vulnerabilities-in-ubuntu-16-04-update-now-505720.shtml I have been looking for something about a kernel update when I install updates every day since I read about this. :-\
Quote:Today, June 27, 2016, Canonical has published a new security notice to inform users of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system about the availability of an important kernel update. According to Ubuntu Security Notice USN-3016-1, a total of seven Linux kernel vulnerabilities have been discovered and fixed in the upstream Linux 4.4 LTS kernel by various developers. Therefore, Canonical has updated the kernel packages for its Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) release to version linux-image-4.4.0-28 (4.4.0-28.47).
Among the patches, we can notice those for some validation issues with Linux kernel's netfilter implementation, an information leak in the core USB implementation, an information leak in the timer handling implementation, an information leak in the X.25 Call Request handling, and a bug in the Transparent Inter-process Communication (TIPC) implementation.
Detailed information and the respective CVEs are available in the security notice for your reading pleasure. The problems affect Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and all of its official derivatives, including Kubuntu 16.04 LTS, Xubuntu 16.04 LTS, Lubuntu 16.04 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS, Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 LTS, and Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS.
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS users need to update right now If you are using the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, Canonical urges you to update as soon as possible. The new kernel version, linux-image-4.4.0-28 (4.4.0-28.47), is now live in the main software repositories. To update, open the Software Updater utility from the Unity Dash and apply all available updates by clicking on the "Install All" button.
For more details, please also visit https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/Upgrades. Keep in mind, though, that Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) doesn't feature the live patching technology in its kernel packages, so you'll need to reboot your system for the new version to take effect. Also, you will have to rebuild any third-party kernel module you might have installed.
Update: Canonical has also released today the Ubuntu Security Notice USN-3017-1 bulletin to inform the community that all the issues patched in the kernel packages of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) should be of interest to users of Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) as well. Ubuntu 15.10 users need to update their systems to linux-image-4.2.0-41 (4.2.0-41.48) as soon as possible. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS users are affected as well.

I have a HP Pavilion laptop. Model number is 17-e016dx. I have a dual band Broadcom 802.11ac internal adapter. I put it in a year ago. When I click on the wifi symbol on the bottom right. It does see the network card but not the wifi adapter. When i did that command in the terminal. I can't remember the terminal command. It does show the 802.11ac wifi adapter.
Do I need to get my ethernet cable and physically hook up my laptop to my wireless router to get my wifi working?
I am not sure what to do at this point. Hope someone here can help me out with this.
Thanks.

In another post a member reporting a problem with using a terminal command to upgrade their software and showed an image of
![[Image: Screenshot_2016_06_28_16_55_38.png]](https://s31.postimg.org/mzepuolaj/Screenshot_2016_06_28_16_55_38.png)
I do not know why or how the member got to that state so let me explain what I tried to do my system in hope I was going to resolve it.
step 1 I used root powers to examine the contents of /etc/locale.gen
step 2 as a local user I ran the command
Code: gordon@asus:~$ locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
gordon@asus:~$
step 3 I made a full backup of that file and then used root powers to strip all contents until it was only this
en_AU.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
step 4 I then as root attempted to change my locale with this result
Code: gordon@asus:~$ sudo locale-gen
Generating locales (this might take a while)...
en_AG.UTF-8... done

I admit I am new to LL and may do things a bit different. I am sure some members might find me arrogant but I am stumped on this one.
Any clues

Could I suggest a section for total Newbs to ask questions that are probably second nature to experienced users.
The "how to/tips" section helps, but takes a lot of things for granted on the use of Linux, ie; terminal commands and how to install different software packages or find settings..
LinuxLite seems to be an easy replacement for Windows on older systems (I am moving from XP), so possibly a lot of new linux users.
Members answering questions could keep that in mind and give more detailed directions (and patience).
Just a thought
