Any thoughts.

What is the length of time of support for custom Linux Lite Kernels?
Posted by: Ottawagrant - 06-16-2016, 01:14 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

Now that you can change your kernel, to an excellent selection of 15 different kernels, it raises a question. According to kernel.org kernel 3.14 (for example) runs out of support this August. As the kernels in the repository are Linux Lite custom kernel's, are the LTS dates the same, longer, or shorter? The reason I ask is that I recently changed some older/less powerful computers running LL 3.0 to Linux Lite custom kernel 3.13.0. Thanks again to anyone with some information on this. Also thanks to Jerry & team for making kernel changes on Linux Lite so very easy.

  Error while installing updates 3.0
Posted by: bobw - 06-16-2016, 08:44 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (23)

I have just installed LL3.0 but cannot install updates.  I have tried 2 separate repositories.  The system is as installed - I haven't installed any other software.  The error message that I am getting in the terminal or Synaptic suggests that the fault lies with LL:

"The repository 'http://repo.linuxlite.com/linuxlite xenial Release' does not have a Release file.Data from such a repository can't be authenticated and is therefore potentially dangerous to use."

Bootloader choices for installer / and live installer options
Posted by: trinidad - 06-15-2016, 05:02 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (1)

Windows converts may not understand the boot loader, and the system installer defaults are meant to address that paradigm, like most live linux installer iso's do, but an optional standalone desktop installer that can be run from a running Debian based linux operating system on the same disk would be nice for regular linux users and would make UEFI issues no problem for less informed linux users. It would also be nice to allow an option in the live installer not to install the boot loader at all, but rather grant access to distro sensitive bootup escalations in a saved file, which could be opened and then configured to the boot loader from their existing running system. There are ways to adjust ram save files for this purpose too. I realize that perhaps I could install the system in virtual mode and copy the files that way, but that is an extra step.

  Cannot Boot from USB
Posted by: bobw - 06-15-2016, 02:13 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

I have bought a Dell Inspiron laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 already loaded (and booted via UEFI).  I want to install LL as the primary OS, but the machine will not boot from the live USB.  I have tried both LL3.0 and LL2.8.

I have changed the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy in the BIOS and set USB as the first boot priority.  It appears to be booting normally into LL, displaying the LL feather screen, but it then opens a live version of Ubuntu 14.04 (not the installed version that I have modified).

There are 4 partitions on the HD:
- a 500MB FAT 32 EFI system partition labelled ESP
- a 3.2GB FAT 32 partition labelled OS, which is not mounted
- a 454GB Ext 4 partition
- a 7.8GB swap partition.

I have run Boot-Repair and allowed it to make the recommended repair, without venturing in to the advanced options where I am out of my depth.  A copy of the text report produced after the repair is attached.  Boot-Repair also displayed the following message:
"The boot files of [The OS now in use - Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]."

I haven't tried this suggestion at present - I don't mind losing the present OS installation completely when I am confident that I can successfully install other OSs, but until then I don't want to risk corrupting it and being left with nothing.

Can anybody help?

LL3 - how to change the splash screen image?
Posted by: bbaker6212 - 06-15-2016, 01:53 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (14)

How can I change the startup splash screen image?... the one that is the white-yellowish background with the feather?  It's is painfully bright when used in a dark room.  I REALLY hate it.  Thanks for help in advance.  Note; I'm not talking about the Xfce splash screen, but the one that displays prior to loading Xfce.  I don't know which component is responsible for that part of the bootup sequence.

  Deluge doesn't work
Posted by: Monkeyman - 06-14-2016, 09:04 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

LL 3.0 on laptop (installed 2 weeks ago on a new SSD).  I've used Deluge on my desktop (currently on 2.8 but I've had it since 2.2) and never had any issues.  Installed Deluge on my laptop when I installed LL.  Works intermittantly since.

Any suggestions?
