Safe removal of USB storage - suggestion for a future LL release
Posted by: m654321 - 05-04-2016, 11:49 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

As in Windows OS, and at least one distro that I know of (Zorin 9), there is an option to mouse-click on for safe removal of USB storage devices.

For example in Zorin 9, at the file manager window, I right-click on the icon for the USB device concerned and a drop-down box will appear - one of the options in this box is safely remove hardware.  When I click on this option the device activity ceases (as you would expect), reflected  by it's blue indicator light going off.

In LL2.8 the options in the drop-down box mentioned above, include unmount and/or eject - either one separately , or unmount followed by eject,  don't appear to stop activity of my external USB drive, i.e. the USB device's blue light stays on. To make LL newbie-proof could we have this safely remove hardware option at some future date?  Obviously I don't want to remove a storage device until it is turned off as I may lose any data still being written...

In the meantime is there a terminal command to safely remove hardware?

Thanks
Mike

  Auto Update
Posted by: superbull - 05-04-2016, 03:22 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

Hi, I am new to here.  Just wondering if there is any way to set up auto update?  Currently I need to manually select the "Install Updates" menu to update the software.

I've tried the following suggestion using cron-apt and anacron but still doesn't work.
https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/insta...9/#msg1739

Any help is appreciated.

Indicator plugin white while panal black

I switched to the dark theme in LL and it went well except for the indicator plugin. It is still white. Is there a way to turn it into black. A pic is in this thread for troubleshhoting help.

  suggestion: "Important Announcements" link
Posted by: LL-user - 05-02-2016, 11:46 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (4)

Hi Jerry,

Still seeing the Google Chrome update error hitting people, reading complex solutions suggested (although the easy solution is linked on top of each Forum's page) and thoughts about such situations in general I would like to suggest the following:

  1. Create a website of Highly Important Announcements. Possible locations:
  • Security & Bug Fixes here on the Forum, BUT ONLY IF it gets cleaned out and posting there gets restricted to yourself and the team.
  • a special page in the Help Manual
  • a website hosted on linuxliteos.com

  1. Place a link to this website
  • on "Welcome to Linux Lite" on top of the "Start Here" category. I would even suggest a duplicate under "Support".
  • into the Help Manual if the page is not hosted within.
  • into the Menu under "System" and "Favorites".
This would give you the defined possibility/ process to communicate with the users - as long as they have internet access that is - even if the update process is screwed.
The icing on the cake would be to have a script running at a specified time to check for changes that have not been acknowledged by the user yet. If a change gets detected a pop up window would be presented to the user. Maybe it could be part of Shaggy's Lite-Updater... Smile

Thanks for your consideration Smile

Dropbox Indicator Not Working Linux Lite 3.0
Posted by: torreydale - 05-02-2016, 01:44 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (26)

Sometimes when I reboot, the problem (red circle with with red diagonal line) returns.  And when I go to Application Autostart, I see the Dropbox entry that I removed has returned.  So to continue the workaround, I remove it again, logout, and then log back on.

Anyone else experiencing this?
