  Can't sync clock
Posted by: paul1149 - 03-27-2016, 07:33 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

Hi,

I'm not able to set the system clock to synchronize. I go into the LL Control Center and select Date and Time. On the first tab is "[] Synchronize date and time over network". I check that, the NTP service starts, but I get an error that it couldn't complete:

I added the government server just to be sure that's not the problem.

I added the NTP rule to the UFW firewall. I even dropped the firewall for testing, but I still get the same error.

The odd thing is that the clock has the correct time, so it must be syncing, but this dialog is erroring out.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Can I move my virtual machines from one PC to another?
Posted by: m654321 - 03-27-2016, 07:31 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (8)

I have a fairly large number of virtual machines set up in Oracle Virtualbox 5.0.16.
However, I would like to copy and use them on another PC.

Once  I've copied the machine folders to the new PC, I'm a bit unsure how to get them
operational again.  As usual any help is much appreciated...

Regards
Mike

  Youtube client
Posted by: liamjake05 - 03-27-2016, 11:01 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

I have a windows XP computer that is used for youtube which now has LL and youtube runs sluggish (before and after LL) so a youtube client should do the trick. I was unable to find a youtube client. Anybody know about one?

Windows 10 - from your computer to satan's server
Posted by: m654321 - 03-27-2016, 09:34 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (3)

Apparently, according to the youtube video link below, when one signs up to Win 10, you're agreeing to a massive invasion of privacy and security.  If the following is true then this is extremely worrying.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEBzc1GHUQE

About half-way through the youtube video, the phone-call finishes and an English guy gives you step-by-step advice on his PC on how to inactivate win10's 'spy-ware'. Worth watching if you want to use win10.

Thankfully, I decided to stop at win8.1 and anyway my main OS for everyday use has been and will continue to be LL - a lot simpler & safer!

Cheers
Mike

  Networking between linux pcs
Posted by: miken242 - 03-26-2016, 11:58 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

Having set up a home network of 3 pc's all went well till I changed the 'distro' on one.It could see the others but not share
following the tutorial (Linux Lite.. very good) didn't seem to help on the other  machine . Having read loads of posts I came across a mention of 'Nitroshare' which I investigated .
Download a copy to each pc and run .. Instant network and share very easy and no in depth knowledge required.
Hope this will help others from tearing their hair out.

  Problem Installing Updates using GUI
Posted by: m654321 - 03-26-2016, 05:33 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (16)

When I click on 'Install Updates' in the Menu I get the following error message: 'couldn't fetch the package cache information lists'
Is there a way of fixing this?

When the above happens (which is always at the moment) I use the terminal instead and type:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Is that sufficient, or do I need to have the command 'install' somewhere in that code?

Thanks for your help
Mike

Can't do 2-sided printing on Canon MF4500w series printer
Posted by: Jan - 03-25-2016, 07:34 PM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (3)

I just finished installing my Canon image class MF 4570dw printer but am unable to get the two-sided printing feature to work.  I go to Printer Properties -> Job Options -> Common Options -> Sides.  From there I have the option of one-sided, two-sided long-edge, and two-sided short-edge.  After I click either of the available two-sided options and choose "Apply", it immediately flips back to one-sided printing.  Any idea on how to get the two-sided option to stick?

I'm brand new to Linux and am so glad to have come upon Linux Lite.  This is REALLY nice!

High CPU usage, apps locking up on find/replace operations
Posted by: paul1149 - 03-25-2016, 03:22 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

Hello gang,

Things have been very solid here for quite some time. But a problem that I had had before has cropped up again and I'd like to deal with it.

I use LibreOffice, and sometimes I will get larger files and reformat them. Typically I will do RegEx searches to find and replace blank lines and unwanted line endings.

Since Day One, Linux Lite 2.4 with its default LibreOffice would have problems doing this for files of any size - say, 1MB or more. CPU for LO will go to 50%, which doesn't seem too bad, but the display will partially freeze and the system will be largely or totally unusable.

Now I'm on LL 2.8 (x64, BTW) with LO 5.1.3 (x64 also), and the same thing is happening to a 1.7MB file. I split the file up into four files, and it did the same thing. So file size is only a minor factor.

This time I kept the files in .txt format, so I could work on them in gedit. To my surprise, the same system lockup is happening there as well, suggesting that this is a system problem. When I do this in gedit, the gedit process goes to 30% CPU, but another process called init goes to 35%, which is even worse than LO performed.

Any insight would be appreciated.
