Security Vulnerability found in Seagate wireless drives.
Posted by: avj - 09-24-2015, 08:24 PM - Forum: Off Topic - No Replies

I just found this article on zdnet:  Seagate drives at risk of data theft over hidden 'root' account. The article is at the following link.

  Broken update-initramfs / initramfs-tools after an update...
Posted by: Zead - 09-24-2015, 03:48 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (6)

So after today's update, I got this...

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-63-generic
mktemp: failed to create file via template ‘/var/tmp/mkinitramfs-FW_XXXXXX’: No such file or directory
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-63-generic with 1.

I even tried to install new kernel and they won't get configured (and now I cannot remove them). I tried some tutorial on internet and no luck :/

I did "sudo leafpad /etc/initramfs-tools/update-initramfs.conf" and disabled update_initramfs here, because I was said that my system wouldn't boot otherwise...

Any help?

Cannot choose usb based external hard drive as the Systemback storage directory
Posted by: torreydale - 09-24-2015, 01:07 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

I'm not able to select my 1TB usb external hard drive as the storage directory for Systemback.  I know we've addressed potentially replacing the backup program (Deja Dup) with Systemback, but until I'm able to do the aforementioned, I say leave Deja Dup in the build.

Two machines stuck on Installing Updates (at the same point)
Posted by: Xorcist - 09-23-2015, 01:35 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (22)

I recently setup two Linux Lite 2.6 machines (one 32bit, one 64bit).

When attempting to install updates today, on both machines, the update dialogs got stuck on:

"Processing triggers for menu (2.1.46ubuntu1)..."

Any ideas why this might happen? The only choice I have is to cancel, and it's been like almost a half hour.

  Linux Lite 3 year Anniversary

[size=1.45em]It was 3 years ago today, the first release of Linux Lite was placed on the internet.

I was one of the founding members of the Linux Distro Community. A place where linux enthusiasts could meet socially online. It was there that it was first suggested that we create a distribution that helped make the transition from Windows to Linux. I'd been in linux long enough to have the confidence to give this a go. The rest, as they say, is history.

Gratitude - this would have been an impossible task without the following key figures

  Terminal Transparency and Customization
Posted by: ChrisL - 09-22-2015, 09:44 PM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (2)

I expect (though I have not been able to find it) that this info is elsewhere.  If so, please let me know and I can delete it.

Nothing too complicated here, but I spent a bit of time finding this out, so maybe it will help someone.  I prefer a terminal background that is fairly transparent.  I makes it easier for me to see what's in the background ... which for me as I become more comfortable with using the terminal - is a web page telling me what I need to do or enter in the terminal. There are certainly other ways to do it, but it boils down to preference.  So,

> Click on and open the terminal in the panel (default lxterminal).
> Then in the choices at the top select: Edit.
> Select Preferences.
> Then you have a button for "background", click on that.
> You are now able to choose a different color AND there is a slider to choose: Opacity.
> Do so, then click "OK".
> Click "OK" again to close the dialog ... Done!

You might want to choose a different foreground (text) color or font while you are at it.

  Thunar shortcuts cannot be removed
Posted by: technomancer - 09-22-2015, 08:33 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

I have not found a topic yet here similar to this issue so here it goes-

In Thunar file manager, on the left pane I added to "places", 5 network shared folders or "shortcuts".
(screenshot is missing folder #1 from trying to remove)
These folders are no longer in use since i have reconfigured my home server.
-I right click and "remove shortcut" and they go away, until the next boot where they reappear.
-I have tried not saving session, disconnected from network and they remain after every boot.
Here is a screenshot-  [Image: Screenshot_09222015_02_09_44_PM.jpg]

Anyone come accross this before ? any suggestions ? I will keep googling......(I'm only finding how to add)

  Is anyone here using Autokey?
Posted by: greenisland - 09-22-2015, 03:15 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (3)

I have installed it today so that I can set up a system of pasting boilerplate text, but I am finding it crashing on me.  Is anyone successfully using it without problems?  If so or if not, is anyone aware of alternative or better programs for inserting boilerplate text?  I have and like CopyQ but I think I need more than a clipboard manager.

thanks

  no more tears

.....and, no more dual bootin on the same hard drive!!  Had two computers that were set up as dual boot machines and they are both toast  just now.  The score is now 2-0 GRUB vs Me. The only way will ever have to OSes is on two separate hard drives totally independent of each other. Just now running Mint 17 as a stand alone. Didn't quite understand why the first machines hard drive went bad until this second one went for a dump.
Had some financial difficulty which forced me into austerity and so went the ISP for about 6 months. One morning fired up the Dell to play some Freecell to kill some time and just after Post beep beep beep the CMOS battery failed. Changed it and reset the date and time, went to reboot  no joy. Just after Post F1 to continue...repeatedly. Lost everything files, docs,  all my art work, both OSes. Looks like, to me anyway, when GRUB fails it takes a hard drive with it. After this never going to dual boot again! The only way I'll have two OSes in the same computer is on two separate hard drives totally independent of each other and switch between the two.
Was given three computers that were deemed scrap by their owners. They had never been maintained. Two Dells and an HP. All three are running perfect just now. The two Dells have XP Pro  and the HP runs Mint 17,  and never shall any meet. Going to repair my other Dell and HP. Will run Lite in the Dell and maybe Win7 in the HP...it's bigger. Not really upset just shocked this can happen twice. BTW BOOT Repair is junk. If this happens to you pull the hard drive and get a new one or good used. Reinstall whatever and your good to go...and don't Google way too much misinformation...total waste of time and effort. Better safe than sorry.
On a more positive note, it's all good experience and have learned lots. Have a good day all, will try to check in more often now that we're up n' runnin'.
