  Unicode suport in Firefox
Posted by: friimynd - 06-22-2015, 05:00 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - No Replies

The default install does not enable Unicode support.  The menu item in Firefox was greyed out till I installed 'lite fonts'

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lite-fonts

is this the right selection?  i found it in another forum post after searching 'unicode'.

  Why Ubuntu? Why Linux Lite?
Posted by: torreydale - 06-22-2015, 04:03 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (21)

I am curious why others here chose Ubuntu and Linux Lite?  I'll go first.

I chose the Ubuntu family because it appeared to be the most popular for newbies and desktops.  I chose Linux Lite because I thought it would be best for transitioning folks in my sphere of influence over to Linux.  Since I'm a newbie myself, I also like the support, the documentation, and the roadmap of where the Linux Lite distro is headed.  When I find myself selling someone on the benefits of Linux, these things make it an easy sell.

Why did you choose Ubuntu LTS and Linux Lite?

  Printer problem
Posted by: 5150Jim - 06-21-2015, 04:07 AM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (12)

Hello to the forum from a new user of Linux.
I have been using Linuxlite for 2 weeks now & I'm ready to ditch the WIN partition. But I do have one concern. It's my wireless printer. I have a Canon MG5422 & if I  go to Printers – localhost & send a test page my printer lights up & thinks that it prints but nothing comes out. And both my wife & daughter can print from their laptops (Win 8 & Win 7) but I haven't been able to & I did go to http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2011/06/downlo...river.html & installed the Canon MG5200 Ubuntu Driver - cnijfilter-mg5200series

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-cnijfilter-mg500series

but it didn't work. I have the troubleshoot.txt from the Debug rpt.
Any ideas?
TNX, Jim

New install on a Dell Inspiron 1501
Posted by: ajlec2000 - 06-21-2015, 02:41 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (1)

My Dell had Ubuntu 10.04 for five years. She was beginning to have issues. I wanted to update to whatever the latest animal is but when looking at the requirements for the new Ubuntu I thought the minimum requirements to be too high for the old girl. When I saw that the wonderfully overpriced Linux Magazine Pro has Linux Lite on the included disc and that the minimum requirements are reasonable I took a chance. So far the install works great. The only glitch is I can't get the on-board Broadcom 4311 working. Fortunately I have a Real Tek wireless USB that plugged, then played.
So here I am.

PS Some of the articles were interesting as well.

  Xscreensaver tip!
Posted by: JmaCWQ - 06-20-2015, 12:04 PM - Forum: On Topic - No Replies

Hello All,

Just a heads-up with regards to running xscreensaver from a keyboard shortcut after upgrading from Linux Lite 2.0 to LinuxLite 2.4.
The shortcut I use is Shift+Alt+S, set for the command /usr/bin/xflock4.
On LL2.0 I used to simply hit those keys & GLSlideshow or whatever was set in Xscreensaver would start & password was required to get back to Desktop or whatever.
I had Screensaver (Launch screensaver and locker program) checked in Sesion and Startup settings in the Application Autostart entries, command: xscreensaver-no-splash.

After upgrading to 2.4 there's also Screen Locker (Launch screen locker program) set to auto start, command: light-locker.
This one takes over the usr/bin/xflock4 command & all that happens is it locks the screen & xscreensaver no longer runs the slideshow or whatever it's set to run.
Solution seems to be to terminate the light-locker process & uncheck it from the Application Autostart entries, once that's done whatever keyboard shortcut runs usr/bin/xflock4 then runs xscreensaver successfully.

I'm not complaining about it or anything, just thought I'd post that in case anyone's having the same problem getting xscreensaver to run the same as I was, might save them the hour or so I spent trying all different things, none of which worked, until I figured out light-locker was running and what it actualy did.

Cheers

Thank you for the good distro
Posted by: ??? ???? - 06-20-2015, 11:53 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (6)

Hello from Ukraine! For some time I use linux, tried different distro. Now my 2 laptops set of about 10. But most use it Lite. First, like all Xfce, secondly, I do not come across such a distro which works well as Network Manager (I use only modem internet CDMA).
However, there are problems with GRUB and multysystem, and I want to ask questions in the forum. English I, unfortunately, do not know because I use Google translator. So whether you understand me?
PS. Also installed Linux Lite on laptop friends about 1 month ago and they are very happy, though previously never even knew about Linux.

  Chrome freezes system?
Posted by: tcpdealer - 06-20-2015, 01:59 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (9)

Hello Linux lite forum,

this night, I thought about to try Linux lite out. I used lubuntu before, but didn't like it, because It's impossible to use Chrome there. Get 100% CPU and will freeze after 10-20min of using it.

So I want to ask you, does this problem exist on Linux Lite with Chrome too?

I would be happy about a answer.

Cya,

dealer

Installing updates hangs at /steam translation en during list collection phase
Posted by: newtusmaximus - 06-19-2015, 07:11 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

Any ideas a) what has changed , and  b) how to get round problem - Use Terminal ??  Thanks

BTW various laptops on LL2.4 32 bit also hesitate at the same point of update but then recover and complete.

Dropbox, mouse, and chrome settings not saved. And a word on the Log Out options
Posted by: torreydale - 06-19-2015, 12:06 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (23)

Whenever I reboot, I have three things I have to reset.  Dropbox, my mouse, and Google Chrome.

1) For Dropbox, before the indicator shows up in the panel, I get a popup saying I need to install the Dropbox Daemon.  I accomplish this by either following their prompts or opening a terminal and typing in "dropbox start -i".

2) For my mouse, I'll notice after a reboot that it won't move as it would before my reboot.  Then when I go to the Mouse and Touchpad settings, sure enough, the mouse is reset to Generic USB.  And I have to select my actual mouse, which is a Microsoft 3 button with IntelliEye.

3) For Google Chrome, I heard about the setting for it to be one's default browser wasn't working via the following video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=defIOXTElHU.  Fifteen minutes into his video he shows how to overcome this.  I follow those instructions, but everytime I open Chrome, I'm still asked to set it as my default.

I have included my System Report as an attachment for the benefit of anyone who can add some help on these items.

I am committed to using Linux Lite.  It is my daily driver now.

I heard Linus Torvalds say although Linux dominates in mobile phones and servers, he thinks the reason it lags in desktop is because most people don't want to install an operating system.  I can do it, and I'm helping others who complain about their PCs make the switch to Linux Lite.  I can see the above issues causing a thorn in their side, though, and I'd just like to be on the front end of those potential turn offs.  I'm also noticing the Switch Users and Log Out options lead me to a black screen.  Not just on my hardware, but in virtual machines.  Suspend won't stay suspended, and Hibernate won't wake up.  For the record, I have seen that Hibernate issue with other Ubuntu 14.04 based distros.  Since Linux makes my reboots snappier than a Windows reboot on the same hardware, I tend to live in the Shutdown and Restart world and I avoid Suspend and Hibernate and Log Out.  But again, I can see those things trying the patience of folks I'm introducing to Linux Lite.
