I have had problems with the brightness on my laptop. I found this:http://www.geekssharingspace.org/2013/11...-your.html
and it just works perfectly with LL 2.2  Smile

Making a simple "Control Panel" like desktop application launcher
Posted by: avj - 02-15-2015, 10:55 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (12)

Since I first started using Linux, I have been disappointed to find that most of the distros that I have tried don't really come with a "Control Panel" like is found in other operating systems, and usually the settings are found scattered throughout the menus and can be hard to find or easy to overlook. Today I decided to see what I could do to fix this.

First I created a new hidden folder on the desktop which I named ".Control".  I then created an application launcher on the desktop which starts thunar file manager in the /home/username/Desktop/.Control  directory, by using this in the command line for the launcher: thunar /home/username/Desktop/.Control    I then named the launcher "Control Center" and chose an icon for it, and clicked create.  The next step was to open the .Control folder in the file manager and drag and drop the items from the settings menu into the folder. After each drag and drop right click on the new item in the folder and mark as executable. I am including two pictures below to show the final results.

Hopefully this will help make it easier to find the settings I am looking for and maybe help others too.  Smile

LL on usb on AMD 32 bit one gig
Posted by: woodsmoke - 02-14-2015, 11:25 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (12)

Hi

The "one gig" is the memory on the machine, the install was on an 8 gig Sandisk usb.
++++++++++++++

I have a widescreen t.v. that I use for "morning coffee, check the mail, calendar and rss feeds".

I also use it as a "music server" in that I normally listen to SOMA fm  orrr....one of my, as with most Linux people, HUGE collection of cds. Smile

I use the old "gyration" "airmouse" and small form factor keyboard so that I don't have to "have the mouse on a pad".

I do this so that I can stand up, while drinking some tea or coffee and going back and forth to the kitchen to make breakfast etc.

I find it rather "refreshing" to not have to "sit down at a terminal" to do stuff, I can wander over to the door and take a look out at the river by the apartment complex, etc.

I am a very BIG fan of Kubuntu, and it has been my work machine for lo these many years, but, well,

a) Kubuntu works great but I really did just want something ......."differnt" on the screen and also...

I started using the whole Kontact PIM, but, hey........it has all moved to the SMARTPHONE!! lol........ my, my how things have changed....yes, if I need to do serious business on e-mail, calendaring, etc. I go to the Kubu machine but this is well, early morning stuff! lol

b) If anyone knows my history, I've donated hundreds of machines with Linux on them and always had to get by with squeezing the most out of the least as it were.

So......as a lark, I thought I try to find

i) a good looking distro in terms of viewing on a large screen from usually ten feet away or so,
ii) a distro that was "keeping itself up to date".
iii) that had......well.......... a different "flair".
iv)....... was......going back to my roots......able to be made "small" or "small in and of itself".

My first thought was TinyMe because of the size and also the particular way that the icon set was arranged, etc. it was on a .... 6.4 gig...lol......and it worked.....but it was waay out of date, I did not know that the original developer had moved on, and it wouldn't play a .pls file..so I could not enable repos etc.

So, I started looking around and discovered a distro which I had not seen before...Linux Lite! :0

So, I downloaded the i386 and installed it on an 8gig usb drive using the "startup disk creator" app and it did fine.

a) the machine I use for the t.v. has a great video processor on it but it is old..., a Gateway that has more usb ports, and ssd ports, and you name it ports. so if I want to view images on cards that I took while scuba diving etc...

The machine started with all of the older, white text on black information and then stalled at "insert bootable dvd".

So, since I'm a hardware kinda guy......... Smile  Smile

i removed the usb drive and reinserted it and guess what.........Linux Lite ......"perceived" that a.....DVD had been put in a tray and away it went! Smile

Again.......an old machine...

It took about two minutes to load.

YOU GUYS DID THE RIGHT THING........recommended that I update first thing......

ummmm wrong first thing to do on THIS particular install! lol

It "updated" ..........took about a HALF HOUR...............

restarted but......could not get on the net because of "no disk space"........lol............

So......I reinstalled it......

and instead of updating........

i removed Libre Office and GIMP and then updated.........and things are going swimmingly!

I even have the blue backgroud with the feather on it! lol

Hey ............

I ) The distro has a certain "crispness" to the appearance which I, personally, like.
II ) In terms of the old teacher in me I just LOVE......LOVE.......LOVE.........the VERBOSE DESCRIPTIONS........ of what the apps etc. do.......

I, PERSONALLY, think that this is ABSOLUTELY what is needed to introduce the new person from Windblows to Linux........

Great job devs! Smile

  Hardware Database question
Posted by: eikelein - 02-14-2015, 06:17 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (8)

Hi all;
I apologize up front for the question but the Hardware database I found liists only relatively few computers.

Is there a hardware database that can be queried?

For example search for "RTL8187" to see if there are drivers anywhere for either a Realtek RTL8187B or the RTL8187SE wireless laptop adapters?

I have a Gateway M-1617 (model W650A) laptop and LL does not detect the wireless NIC. Ethernet is working perfectly and, as I expected, Gateway is more of a problem  than help.

TIA in advance
Eike

[SOLVED] Mouse Right Click auto selects whatever is in on submenu below pointer
Posted by: avj - 02-13-2015, 04:43 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

I don't know if this is a  bug or if it is a hardware issue on my end. It does not occur all the time but, sometimes when I right click on stuff like a url in the browser it will auto select the option that is under the pointer when the menu pops up. I at first thought this was a glitch with FF but this morning it happened in the file manager while I was looking at files on my backup external hard drive and deleted an entire folder. I restored the folder from the trash, but I thought it should be brought to the team's attention.

  Font Settings
Posted by: Duckrow - 02-13-2015, 07:08 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

Hi,
I've been using ubuntu and derivatives for some years but am very low on the learning curve none-the-less.
I recently found some email messages and documents opening as a series of squares and suspect the font settings. I downloaded and installed apple fonts (already have ms fonts) to try and fix this but it hasn't.

Perhaps it is something obvious. but documents I have made in the past are not displaying correctly in leafpad. If I change the font to wingdings or some others it reads in the preview but Times New Roman and other common fonts dont.

I resoved the issue in my email by unchecking the allow messages to use other fonts box in advanced display settings of thunderbird.
I've never fully understood what character encoding is but wonder if it is that. The problem is that I dont see a system wide setting for that.

Linux Lite on Acer Aspire One
Posted by: avj - 02-13-2015, 12:06 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (7)

Hello all,
I would like to thank the team of developers for such a nice operating system.  I have only been using Linux for a couple of years, and have tried more than a few distros.  I started with Ubuntu 12.04, but was never satisfied with Unity, so I tried Debian, Slitaz, Zorin and others and found most of them to be very unfriendly to new users, the ones that were more friendly just didn't have the feel I was looking for. I have been using LL since 2.0 and just recently upgraded to 2.2. One of the things I love about LL is that it is easy on old hardware. I am currently running it on an old Acer Aspire One AOA150 that i got in 2009 with 1GB ram. LL works great I have even been able to run Virtualbox on it with xp to run some of my old go to win programs. The team is doing a great job, keep up the good work.
