  [SOLVED] Widescreen monitor?
Posted by: ChrisL - 12-04-2014, 01:07 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I have been looking at better monitors a bit and a lot of them are the widescreen variety which looks nice, but the fine print says something about "if the system supports widescreen".  I am a little confused about what in the system needs to be supporting use of a widescreen.  Is it the OS, or the video card, or??

I am running LL 2.0 with a Core2Duo 3.0ghz and an NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT video card.  What would be the limitation?  How would I know if I can use widescreen?

  Blank screen issue
Posted by: Miostellar - 12-03-2014, 09:55 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (6)

I'm sorry for another boring Blank Screen problem but I have spent the past few days searching previous posts, tried many of the suggestions but I am now pulling the last few strands of hair from my head.

I installed LL 2.0 on two other units without any problems but the Acer Aspire 5736Z with Intel GMA 4500M just won't play ball. I have now installed LL 2.2 as the only OS on the 3.2gb HDD. Holding the shift key brings up menu and "e" on recovery mode allows full use of system but, although updates were installed there are no updated drivers of any kind to replace existing drivers.

I have tried all the suggestions here and elsewhere on the internet  - changed "set params ...... description.... Linux ...ro recovery " to nomodeset=0, modeset=gm4500, modeset=i4500 etc.etc..

Can't find anyone else on the forum with Acer 5736 or GMA4500 and this system does not show up on the hardware list but I have tried the solutions suggested for many of the other similar systems.

The only other problem is the Webcam that I can not find on the system on this Acer nor on an Acer Aspire One Netbook which I would also like to get working but have not spent too much time on it so far as I need to get the basic system booting correctly first.

I would be very much like to try any suggestions that you may offer and thank any of you who may offer your assistance.

From the manual on install:

"If you have a webcam, you may encounter a screen during the install asking to 'Take a photo' this feature is supported so that when you first log in, your photo will be displayed as your avatar. If you skip this step, you can use a .png photo of yourself, rename it to .face and place it in your /home/user folder."

I don't have a webcam, but was going to insert a photo as in the second part, but it's unclear to me exactly what to do.

1) So I take my photo, let's say it's chris.png and I rename it chris.face
2) Where do I put this: If I open Home, I don't have a folder named User, are we talking about my folder named: Chris?  ... and if so, where do I put it in there, should it go into one of the folders in there or just in Chris?  In Filesystem there is a "usr" file but that is "above" Home.

So, basically, do I understand the renaming part correctly and exactly where do I put the renamed folder?

Thanks!

  Teamviewer 10
Posted by: Valtam - 12-03-2014, 01:41 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (4)

Teamviewer keep changing how they package deb's. As a result it plays havoc with how we offer it.

To get the latest (10) version of Teamviewer do this:

1) Menu, System, Remove Additional Software > remove Teamveiwer.

2) Menu, Favorites, Install Updates

3) Menu, System, Install Additional Software > install Teamveiwer.

You MUST do it in this order or it won't work. Cheers Smile

  Proxy settings
Posted by: essenby - 12-03-2014, 10:36 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (7)

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place for this and I apologise it this should be under Networks, but is it possible to set a system-wide proxy in LinuxLite, and if so - how?

I would like to use my laptop from my work location which uses a proxy server.  Whilst I can set the proxy correctly in Firefox, I cannot for example update any software because the system cannot find the repository.

Regards,

[SOLVED] Brightness issue -- ASUS 1001p
Posted by: Chris_OC - 12-03-2014, 01:32 AM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (26)

Hey all! I'm new here and new to Linux, and I'm trying to overcome a problem with screen brightness that seems to be common with the ASUS 1001p netbook. I hope I'm in the right section of the forum; there's no separate video card, of course, but I don't see any other area where this would belong. If it needs to be moved, please do so.

I loaded Linux Lite 2.2 32-bit today, and while it's clear, even with my limited experience, that this PC is better suited to Linux Lite, the screen won't go as bright as it did with Windows.

I updated the BIOS to the most recent version available from ASUS, but that made no difference.

I searched the web and found references to this problem with other versions of Linux revolving around editing the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. I found two different edits, written as follows:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"

...and I tried both (separately, of course) but neither made any difference. Linux Lite tells me that brightness is at maximum, and changing it doesn't make the screen dimmer.

This is far from the biggest problem I could have, but it'd be nice to be able to fix it if a fix exists with Linux Lite.

If it helps, the hardware specs are as follows:

Atom N450 CPU
2 gb RAM
Crucial M4 128 gb SSD
Intel GMA 3150 video, screen resolution 1024x600

The RAM and SSD are my upgrades to the original equipment.

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can offer.

Hello All,

I've been using Linux as primary operating system since 1999. I have just installed Lite 2.2 Why I have not done it before??? Great distro. It is a distro I definitely would recommend, also for those who use Windows XP

Keep up the great work, you've made an excellent distro! The LTS factor is much appreciated. Thanks
