Base RAM Usage 32 bit/Suitability for New Users - cuscotravelservices - 06-20-2014 Hi All, I am investigating options for my Spanish speaking Landlord's old desktop with a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz CPU, 512MB RAM (400MHz) and a 40 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM ATA 133 - IDE). Without any optimisations nor modifications what is the Memory Usage when the system is ready for use? How much Hard Drive space does a Default install require? What would be the approximate Boot Time for the above Hardware specifications? My Landlord is not knowledgeable about Computers but his daughters are regular users. How suitable is Linux Lite 2.0 for people such as my Landlord? Is there a Spanish language pack available? Thanks, Michael Re: Base RAM Usage 32 bit/Suitability for New Users - gold_finger - 06-20-2014 I have LL installed to a friends computer with similar specs (see below). It is currently dual-booting with Windows XP. LL boots faster and operates faster than XP. I don't remember how long the boot process was, but do remember it was almost half of the time that Win XP took to fully boot and be ready to use (with anti-virus and firewall finished loading and ready). Code: bill@palladium:~$ inxi -Fxz Scroll down the output to the second to last line and you will see next to "Memory" that it is using approximately 176MB of the 500MB of RAM when up and running at idle. (It's a standard install with no special performance tweaks.) The installed system will take up slightly less than 5GB of space (not including the swap partition, which should be at least the size of RAM); but you should allot more than that if space is available or you will run out of room quickly. Try to make the LL partition at least 10GB. If user creates and/or saves many data files (especially videos) the space will fill up fast unless they are saved to a USB stick or something else. How suitable is Linux Lite 2.0 for people such as my Landlord?LL is very easy to use for basic computing needs - web browsing, creating/reading documents, viewing movies, playing music, etc. Basic usage will not require any special knowledge, nor require the use of terminal commands under normal circumstances; so landlord and daughters will probably be fine using it. Quote:Is there a Spanish language pack available? You can designate Spanish as the language during installation. You can also add Spanish to the installation later by following these instructions in the Help Manual. |
