Hello from a grateful Dad - jamieal - 02-04-2020 Hi Linux Lite Community Just installed Linux Lite on my daughters Sony Varo Netbook which originally ran Windows 7 Starter 32 bit (a woeful operating system). As recommended I checked the Varos hardware against LL configuration database and tried LL using a distro burned to a USB stick – everything worked first time! I did compare LL with Lubuntu ( a bit stark) and Mint Mate and found LL to be the right combination of snappy performance (within the limits of an Intel Atom processor), leanness and features – well done Jerry and the team. Couple of things to note I found Etcher would not boot up on my Win10 laptop so burned my LL distro using Rufus. Also Lubuntu kept corrupting its distro on the USB stick after a couple of hours running the live distro – is this a known problem with Ubuntu/Debian based distos? I now have a happy 8 year old who can watch kids Youtube and work on her homework without borrowing Dads laptop. Re: Hello from a grateful Dad - Artim - 02-05-2020 Welcome! She can probably do everything by herself on Linux Lite, it's point-and-click simplicity for kids (and technophobes like me)! There's plenty of support right here in this awesome, friendly community too, if you need it. Re: Hello from a grateful Dad - TheDead - 02-05-2020 Hi and Welcome! And Linux Lite saves another computer from the scrap (or closet) pile ![]() I usually installed the 32 bits version on Atom... I don't see Atom's very often, nice to know some newer models are 64 bits. ![]() I may be talking out of my.. hat, but I think Etcher needs .Net 3.5 to work, but it's not mentionned on the download page. Windows 10 does not have .NET 3.5 by default, and can be a pain to install if the included OS installer does not work, which I saw frequently. And, Wowza, Etcher is now 130MB in size (installer), that is HUGE compared to Rufus's 1MB (straight executable). :-O Re: Hello from a grateful Dad - bscho - 02-07-2020 (02-04-2020, 07:32 PM)jamieal link Wrote: Hi Linux Lite Community Do not forget PlayonLinux if she wants to run Windoze programs Also Lubuntu kept corrupting its distro on the USB stick after a couple of hours running the live distro – is this a known problem with Ubuntu/Debian based distos? No it is nota known problem though I did try to install LLbuntu never worked so I ditched it and installed Manjaro. Why do you not change the USB to readonly see if that works? |
