Yes, it is convoluted. I tried this morning just to claim my licenses for Windows 10. I'm only running Windows 7 in Virtualbox now since I use Linux Lite for my desktop and laptop. I have a right to two Windows 10 licenses since I have two Windows 7 licenses, but the upgrade process doesn't want to play nicely in a virtual machine. Perhaps the process is looking for actual hardware.
I'll just stick with Windows 7 in VM for now. It's supported until 2020. Linux will be even better, than it already is now, by then. And perhaps the two things I still use Windows for will have Linux equivalents by then.
