I just installed the applet from synaptic and it functioned fine , except for playing an audio file.
I don't know why it didn't occur to me to just look through the Gstreamer plugins . I think I was a bit intimidated by by the prospect . I'm a low level user ; but I scrolled through and installed some things that seemed like they might be pertinent and nothing seems to have broken , and it plays an mp3 file , so , hopefully it's all good. Kinda fly by nite , hit or miss.
