The Linux Lite Welcome screen that I believe comes up on startup by default, prominently displays a coloured "Install Updates - Do this first" button. If your sister makes a habit of clicking on it, updates if any will always be checked for. The routine may be a little cumbersome, with a step or two that could well be eliminated, but the reward is in speed with which the updates are delivered (seconds, really) - a definite plus compared to the horror stories abounding in the Windows territory.
I should also think that with Linux one can feel safe not checking for updates rigorously every day, but determine a reasonable interval instead based on experience.
Terry Davis Command Line video cracks me up.
