[member=7109]Moltke[/member] and [member=6925]RandomBoy[/member] on Bodhi
I'm trying to keep old computers alive too, some too old.
Yes, Bodhi used less resources on live (95MB RAM) and once installed (105MB RAM) but unfortunately, it takes a lot more resources WHEN installing. The last 32bits version with "app-pack" (i.e. Office, etc.) was 4.1.0 and it's getting quite old now.
ADD: Forgot to mention that the Moshka interface is impressive and fast on old computers but also prone to graphics corruption, wrong objects/button placement or just plain not user friendly or intuitive.
I was not able to install it on an old Pentium 3 (with 512MB if I remember correctly but could be 256MB), installer just took forever and I didn't have the time, so I clone a previous install on it and booted fine but lagged again horribly when doing updates. Had to go the Peppermint (LXDE+XFCE hybrid using route in the end to have something semi-fonctionnal AND with a Whisker menu. Pepper used 160MB RAM at the time but the latest version uses 205MB). All that trouble for a 15$ laptop.
To save you time, it IS possible to install Whisker on Bodhi, but you have to install XFCE DE first. You end up with a XFCE+Whisker desktop using just 150MB RAM. I would NOT recommend this installation for ANY serious use as 1. I have not tried it more than one hour and 2. It is absolutely not a supported configuration and I'm guessing updates would brake it instantly. Also, I don't know if this would weight in but Bodhi does not have FireFox either. It uses Midori, a light/nice but old/unstable browser.
For reference, Linux Lite 3.6 x32 it more recent, infinitely more stable and uses around 204MB on a live boot and around 250MB once installed.
NOTE : Maybe it depends on RAM available but with an old PC but with 1.5GB RAM, Linux Lite 2.8 is sometimes a little faster but uses around 1000MB live and 500MB RAM installed.
Soooo, I totally agree with [member=2]Jerry[/member], if a computer can't run Linux Lite it's only for home/hobby use or to be used as a paper weight.
My own additional criteria, if it can't play a 240p YouTube video, it's not worth it. Coincidently, a Netbook with an Atom N455 and 1GB RAM just barely makes this mark.
And Broadcom sucks! Just had to say it.
Cheers!
