system reverted to Ubuntu after Proton VPN install

This indicates something more is wrong. I recall another report that a Linux Lite installation had lost the LL modifications.
It was maybe a couple of years ago and I can't find that thread to compare with your experience but if I recall correctly it wasn't established what had happened.

In your position, I'd wait to see if Jerry/Valtam or Trinidad have any insight.

As my adoptive father would say: "Just for *BLEEPS* and giggles" ...

#1 — I finally figured out how to get Flatpak installed. And made the assumption that would be the preferred route, next go-'round.

#2 — I went ahead and tested it out on the 20-something year old Mac Mini. And it seems to be working just fine.

#3 — And I have spent the day migrating everything off the system drives. In anticipation of other failures ... or needing // requiring a fresh install.

#4 — Should that be the consensus
