  No sound after use Headphones
Posted by: Steff260 - 03-23-2020, 09:11 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (5)

I have no sound on my laptop when playing DVD. Use VLC media player.
Sound also does not work for movies over the Internet in the Firefox browser.

Problem occurred when I wanted to watch with headphones. Headphones connected to laptop. Sound was hardly audible, even at maximum volume.  Headphones removed again. Then I wanted to continue watching the movie with laptop speakers. All of a sudden no sound anymore. Movie plays normally.

Where or what could I look up? Change which settings?

Thanks for your help

  Need help with PlayOnLinux
Posted by: baiselmareo6 - 03-23-2020, 10:29 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

Hi guys, I am a new-ish linux user running linux-lite. I just installed wine and PlayOnLinux to install a windows app (SPSS) and the process seemed to have been concluded succesfully

However, I cant find the application. I tried re-installing it but the 'virtual drive' used by PlayOnLinux can be seen and I can attempt to repair the installed application through running the setup again, but I cant use it.192.168.0.1 routerlogin 192.168.l.l

I'm sure I am missing something. Any help will be really appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello, I'm running Linux Lite from my USB stick :D (introduction)
Posted by: Crimson_Raven - 03-22-2020, 08:39 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (1)

Hey everyone!

I'm (kinda?) new to linux - I made the switch a couple of months back when I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon - in a Virtualbox at first, then as Dualboot, it became my daily driver and now, I moved on to Manjaro, but I never moved on from the Cinnamon desktop (its so pretty ^^), even though I tried pretty much all of them, I kept coming back to it.

I use Linux Lite on my USB thumb drive as my portable OS, and I gotta say, it excels at that! I tried it at first on my small, old and slow USB2.0 8GB flash drive to see if it would work at all, and sure enough it did (but had some serious slowdowns at times, because of the port speed). I since got a USB 3.1 64GB drive for this sole purpose and was surprised how smooth everything worked (even when plugged into a usb 2.0 port).

Linux Lite has a special place in my heart, because it is exactly what I was looking for - a lightweight, yet feature-packed distro to run from my USB. I did try a couple of other "lightweight" distros before that like puppy linux, but they were so stripped of features (and so unpleasing to the eye, might I add), that they were borderline unusable for me (yeah I'm pretentious when it comes to my software). The XFCE DE for linux lite is starting to grow on me too, even if it's not my beloved Cinnamon.

The reason I need a portable USB OS, is that in my university we have some work-PCs that actually have pretty good specs, but have TERRIBLY bloated windows 10 installations (they're public afterall, anyone can install anything, you can imagine the mess), and it's everything but a pleasure to work on them. I did try to fix them, but every time I come back, someone has undone all of my hard work. Booting from a USB allows me to use the full potential of the hardware, while avoiding windows altogether with all its bloat.

Why is performance so important for a university work pc, you ask? I study design, and we use powerful 2D and 3D editing software that requires good hardware. I currently have Krita, Inkscape and Blender on my LL installation, as alternatives to Photoshop, Illustrator and 3DSmax, and they're working wonderfully well. Too bad I can't use the USB at uni right now, because of the whole quarantine situation that's going on 'round the globe, but I'm still using it at my GF's place Tongue

I'm glad to be part of this (relatively small, but friendly) community. Smile
Also, here's a screenshot of my desktop for the lulz:

How to mount second hard drive without a password
Posted by: johnnyboy5000 - 03-21-2020, 02:30 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (3)

I have a second hard drive in this pc and I'd like it to be mounted on start up.  currently it's there, greyed out and I have to double click it and "authentication is required to mount". I know there is a preference/option to not have to authenticate, I did it once before, but I forgot what I did. Where is that option to have the hard drive to be mounted at start up?  Thanks.

  Recovering from possible bad update
Posted by: LarryB1607 - 03-19-2020, 07:53 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - No Replies

There were some updates that I installed and my system got stuck at the picture of the feather.

I did some research and found that if something happens, I should downgrade to an earlier kernel.

Next boot I selected the advanced options and was presented with several.  The top option was listed as: 4.15.0-91 generic.

The 2nd option had the same numbers and included recovery mode.

The 3rd option was listed as 14.5.0-88 generic and seems to work.  It did seem to get stuck at loading ramdisk one time, but di not the next time.  I checked for updates and it said that I was up to date.

How do I get rid of the 4.15.0-91 generic offering.  I have not as yet done enough reboots to see if my chosen downgrade is going to boot everytime.  I am a total nube at Linux.  Was OK with Win 7, but everything is so cryptic here.

Thanks
