Rear USB charging triggers Shotwell to open
Posted by: CaperAsh - 01-05-2019, 06:49 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (4)

Since installing latest LL version (with latest Ubuntu LTS), every time I plug in a USB to charge cell phone, Shotwell opens up. Have no idea how to control this.

Installed Mate' desktop environment. How do I get it to load on LL 4.2?
Posted by: George S Rasmussen - 01-05-2019, 04:15 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

I installed the Mate' desktop environment on LL 4.2, but when I reboot I can't find where to select it to load instead of Xfce. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  Windows mounts suddenly going read-only
Posted by: timbuck2 - 01-05-2019, 04:08 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (7)

For a couple of days my windows7 and windows10 drives have been going read-only and I have to reboot and check their filesystems.

They are auto-mounted via fstab:

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=a2fbbae1-060e-4751-bec4-653e2c031c9f /  ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1
UUID=CC36728936727474    /mnt/windows10    ntfs    defaults    0    0
UUID=6460FFA960FF7FDA    /mnt/windows7    ntfs    defaults    0    0
/swapfile                                 none            swap    sw              0       0
/dev/fd0        /media/floppy0  auto    rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0

What could be causing this issue?  It just started yesterday and happened today a couple of times after I restarted LL.  Are they not being unmounted properly?

wind64-preloader 3.0-1ubuntu1
wine32-preloader:i386 3.0-1ubuntu1
wine32:i386 3.0-1ubuntu1

My machine is amd64.  Thanks.

Can't Install Linux Lite on Acer Aspire
Posted by: Gambler258 - 01-02-2019, 08:39 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (30)

Hello everyone

As title says, I just can't still Linux Lite OS on my Acer Aspire ES 17, which has Celeron N3350 CPU. I tried the options on the BIOS, but the Secure Boot can't be disable and it has UEFI mode.

It always get stuck on "installing grub2 package".

I wonder, If I just remove the hard drive, connect it on a PC and install Linux Lite on that same hard drive and then connect it on my laptop back again, will it work ?

Will I need to install drivers ?

Thanks in advance

After installing how do I set grub to chainload old windows10 drive?
Posted by: timbuck2 - 01-02-2019, 01:25 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (5)

I have Linux Lite 4.2 and grub installed on ssd with the grub menu showing at boot.

My old windows 10 drive is still attached and mounted so I can browse files.

I can boot the old win10 drive through the bios boot menu, but would like to add the option into the grub menu.

Can anyone suggest a way to add an entry to chainload the windows10 drive through the grub menu?

Help setting up FTP and Ping to my Linux Lite machine
Posted by: timbuck2 - 01-02-2019, 12:57 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (21)

Hello,

I have set up Linux Lite and have been using it for about a week.

I now want to set up ftp access to the computer.

I installed vsftpd and edited /etc/vsftpd.conf and can login through localhost.

But when I tried to ftp in from another machine in the house, it couldn't connect.

After some research I used ufw to allow ftp with:

Code:
sudo ufw allow ftp
but after restarting the firewall I still can't reach the Linux Lite machine from the other computer.

From the other computer I can ping the router 192.168.0.1 and www.google.com so I know it's working but can't get a ping response from the Linux Lite machine.

So I disabled the firewall with
Code:
sudo ufw disable
and restarted the computer.  Still can't get a ping response from the Linux Lite machine.  The Linux Lite machine can ping the other machine, router, google.com, etc.

What can I do to get my other machine to ftp and ping the Linux Lite machine?  Thanks for any help you can offer.  I'm tearing my hair out with this one (the little I have left lol)

gdebi is not working for me
Posted by: torreydale - 01-01-2019, 01:53 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

I upgraded a laptop from LL 3.8 to LL 4.2 via a clean install of LL 4.2 two days ago.  I think I've counted about three .deb files I needed to install post LL 4.2 upgrade.  When I click on the .deb file, gdebi opens, and I click on Install.  The window disappears, and nothing happens.  I resort to installing the software using the command line with the "sudo dpkg -i" approach.  That does work.

I have used the reinstallation option in Install/Remove Software on the gdebi package to no avail.  Any suggestions?

  Hplip doesn't install proprietary plugin.
Posted by: ArbolE - 01-01-2019, 02:51 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (4)

I've been trying to install hplip for quite a while so I can use my LaserJet m1132 printer, but I've been unsuccesful. At first it failed to install the proprietary plugin from the HP servers, with this message displayed: "Plugin download failed with error code = 4". I uninstalled it and installed it again several times including cups to no avail, then I tried to install the plugin manually from the openprinting archive but it displayed this message: "error: Python gobject/dbus may be not installed error: Plug-in install failed." What am I supposed to do to fix this issue? When I try to print it says that it can't communicate with the printer. I'm new to the linuxlite community and I still don't have much experience, when I was using lubuntu the printer worked fine after a little bit of work installing everything so I know it's possible to make it work on linux.
Thank you for your help.
