What type of Wi-Fi card to purchase? Guidelines or recommendations?

Hi, I have a hardware issue on my LL machine and am looking to buy a new Wi-Fi card.
Brief background (no need to read this part unless you want to): I've been having Wi-Fi problems that got worse over time and got an error situation like the one here by this person on Ubuntu forums https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2309044, and their solution that worked was to install a new Wi-Fi card.
Current question (the important part): While I could look into the card they got in the link above, I'm aware that their answer was posted in 2016 and I'm looking to in the near-term future update my machine to LL 4.2 (currently on 3.8 ) Any recommendations from the LL community on what Wi-Fi I should buy? My machine specs are as shown in my profile. It's an HP tower. I am a total noob at this, but luckily I'm able to get someone who is willing to help with actually opening up the machine and taking out old card and putting in new one (FYI he says its been years since he's done anything like that).
Anyway, I need to purchase a Wi-Fi card first, so if anyone has recommendations on which brand or model I should get, I'd love to have guidance. Reliability/ease of use/compatibility/ease of installation are all more important to me than price considerations. Thanks for any information that anyone can provide.
UPDATE: I've been looking at https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/w...ion-tpe-nh and it said that some models of HP (among others) limit what types of hardware can be installed inside. For those users, it recommends a USB WiFi. USB Wi-Fi's are supposed to work best when in line of sight from the router, which works fine for me (my computer is in a direct line of sight in same room as router). So, now I'm thinking of a USB Wi-Fi. Maybe this one? https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/p...pe-n150usb Any comments?

Hi.
I already had Gimp version 2.10.8 installed.
So I decided to install the newest version: Code: sudo apt-get autoremove gimp gimp-plugin-registry
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp
But - I end up getting the version 2.10.8 installed instead. Can anybody point out what I'm doing wrong here ?

Cannot make a successful bootable LL USB

Hello All,
For some reason, I cannot get a bootable USB of the Linux Lite ISO. I have tried every commonly known GUI versions of USB creators, i.e. Yumi, Unetbootin, etc. and even the DD terminal command and still cannot get it to boot in order to use it as Live version or to install. I can easily use the same ISO for burning a CD but not a USB and am hoping someone here has had a similar issue and found a fix. CD is just way to slow so I want to get a USB version if at all possible. I would appreciate any assistance you can provide and Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Hi, all,
Just a heads up at the moment, and a bare bones description until I can spend a bit more time explaining the problem and researching it. This is on a production laptop, so until I can update my test laptop you can understand my reluctance to test it again! But I'll research online and go through the log files.
Basic description of problem: (After a file copy operation in Thunar) Upon ejecting a USB stick using the left menu column eject icon in Thunar, the mouse cursor changes to busy and then system immediately goes into complete freeze requiring a hard reset. After boot, the last file written to the hard drive manually (in this case a text file containing verification SHA256 values I calculated on the USB stick file copies) is 0 bytes in size. Causes no known problems in the linux build on the laptop and does not corrupt the files on the USB stick.
Problem occurs immediately following update from 20181019 4.4.0-136-generic # 162 to OS below (both LL3.8). However one USB stick had ejected fine after a copy FROM usb (i.e., without writing to the USB stick) - so the issue may be restricted to a specific make and size or to write to usb operations.
OS version: (LL3.8) Linux linux01 4.4.0-140-generic #166-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 14 20:09:47 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Thunar version: 1.6.11
Unaffected USB stick (read from only): KINGSTON DataTraveller G4 64GB (brand new).
Affected USB sticks (two separate ones after write to, but having performed flawlessly for over 30 cycles each): KINGSTON DataTraveller G4 16GB.
Not tested ejecting USB stick from terminal or partition drives menu option.
Having booted the laptop after each freeze with the USB stick still physically connected and manually re-verifying the SHA256 values of the files on both the HD and USB (which were correct), the USB stick ejected without problem from Thunar - which suggests to me the issue is related to copying files from HD to USB via Thunar.
Haven't tried copying files from HD to USB stick from terminal.
Thanks for reading.

HDMI external monitor not working [Linux Lite 4.2]

Kernel: 4.15.0-38-generic x86_64
Hardware: Dell latitude 7270
OS: Linux Lite 4.2
I've had this problem with my current distro of Linux Lite 4.2 and with a prior distro of Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia. When I connect my HDMI cable to my TV, it's not detected by the computer. Then I learned that you have to boot with the HDMI cable already plugged in. I do see the DELL logo while in the POST, but after that the image on the TV fades and it goes back to my laptop and shows me the log in screen. After logging in, the computer doesn't detect the TV. I'm even able to see GRUB on the TV if I access it. But when it tries to load the Linux OS, the image switches from displaying on the TV to the laptop screen.
Also tried booting from other live distros, with no luck.
I've read on other forums that I have to switch between some nVidia video drivers, but I don't think that applies to my configuration because my video card is from Intel, and the BIOS has no video settings I can play with to switch drivers.
On this thread it was suggested to update to kernel 4.15.18-041518-generic, which didn't work for me.

Thanks
