Where in the file system is the Network Controller driver stored?
Posted by: m654321 - 11-14-2018, 05:37 PM - Forum: Network - No Replies

Where, in the LL3 file system, is the driver for the Network Controller stored?
Also, what kind of name is it likely to be called?

Using terminal, I get this output when identifying the WiFi card:

Code:
mike@D630:~$ sudo lspci | grep -i network
[sudo] password for mike:
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

Many thanks for any help with this. I never seem to get to grips with the linux file system - one rainy day I'll sit down and learn by heart the entire file system map  :-[  (did I really say that!)

Cheers
Mike

  About CPU over heating
Posted by: kpanic - 11-14-2018, 02:58 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (7)

Sometimes, especially in older machines, the CPU temperature may rise above it's normal threshold.
This is usually not an issue with new CPUs, since they don't consume power so much.

But since we are talking about older computers, over heating may become an issue and I write this topic
about how to deal with it.

First of all, old CPU units tend to consume much power, which leads to heating. there is no way out of the fact.
This is the reason why desktop computers usually have huge cooling units - of various kinds, which themselves
produce again more heat - there is no way out of this thermodynamic fact. The extra heat must go somewhere.
Desktops just "blow away" the heat into room air, which is usually always much cooler.

But how about older laptops. They don't have efficient cooling systems and sometimes the CPU temperature
just hits it's maxium. There are many ways to deal with this situation though. I try to explain some of them here.
The first one is kernel-dependent, meaning that you cannot use it if the running kernel does not support it.
To find out, open the console and command:

Code:
sudo grep MCE /boot/config-$(uname -r)

If the output has a line like: "CONFIG_X86_MCE=y", then you can use the CPU Machine Exception Banks for
this purpose. Just make sure the service has been enabled by commanding:

Code:
systemctl status mcelog
If it does not run or has not been installed, then install mcelog, enable and start it:
Code:
systemctl enable mcelog; sleep 5; systemctl start mcelog

That should do it. Now the kernel is able to communicate with the mce-process, and warn if the temperature
is too high. How to configure the mcelog daemon? Ask! MCElog does much more than just reports about
temperatures, so this may not be the best possible solution to this particular problem.

There are many other ways to deal with this issue, for example using the desktop XFCE sensors plugin, which
brings the CPU core temperatures to the XFCE desktop.

And you may always just read the temperature from /sys: (and maybe use it in cron or by other means)
Code:
cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp

Divide that by 1000 and you have approximately the core0 temperature in Celsius, metric units (The Correct ones Smile

Well, I thought I would write more about this topic, but I'll write about "thermald", "lm_sensors" and "SMART" in
other topics if you guys think it might be interesting

Cheers!

  Bonjour ! Hello ! from Québec !
Posted by: Linux Helena - 11-13-2018, 08:19 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (6)

Bonjour tout le monde / Hello everyone  Smile

Thanks again to Jerry for the greetings.

I've been following this forum for a little while now. I bought an old 14" Toshiba Satellite laptop, with 1.5 Gb RAM from the Windows Vista era, with a dysfunctional Windows 7 on it, for $30CAD, in view of installing LL on it.  8)

I've initially installed LL in September x2 but updates installation failed.... put it aside. I gave it a second go today, x2 failed installations (combined with updates), because hard drive was heating up too much and probably needed replacing, according to install assistant.  :o

I decided to cool this laptop down fast by placing it on the cold ceramic floor for 2 hours and see if I could safe myself a hard drive purchase.

I did the installation this time, opting for installing updates separately.  :Smile So far so good !!

I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 on my initial 10 y.-o. desktop when its hard drive died last year, and planning on installing LMDE on another desktop I just acquired for this purpose (this one has Ubuntu 16 on it, installed by the person who sold it to me).

I'm francophone from Québec. If I can be of some help in French, at explaining or translating, probably better than automated translators,  Wink I'll be pleased to do so. Keeping in mind that I'm a Linux newbie.  :Smile

See you on the forums.

For anyone who has a newer computer as I do and has UEFI or EFI as the case may be, you might find this link useful. It will not be long where bios will be replaced and EFI will be the standard.

  LiteMarkets interface done and downloadable
Posted by: trinidad - 11-12-2018, 06:22 PM - Forum: Desktop Customization - No Replies

I've gone as far as I will go with this for now. The links below lead to the last tutorial, and the download. From now on there will just be additions and improvements to the scripts and interface which you can look for on my website. I can finally work on some more complex functions that the API offers like exchange rates, trend lines, algorithms, etc. As long as the API remains free and open I will continue to add functionality to the LL interface and scripts. If you are new to this please read through all the tutorials, and if you choose to download the interface and scripts please read the Read_Me_Help file thoroughly, and please direct any other questions to my email or messages rather than the forum.
