| Need help setting up VPN |

OK, kind of a *ix noob here. I did google this and found a lot of useless info already, mostly on askubuntu (it IS a bigger community and tends to come up... and since LL is derived from U) I am a long-time windows user so forgive me if I use the win terms.
Want to start trying out some VPNs, mostly know how it works. On the network context menu, it has "VPN Connections", with a sub menu "Add a VPN Connection", but it is greyed out. I ran this CL to install, as per instructions from the provider:
sudo apt-get install openvpn network-manager-openvpn network-manager-openvpn-gnome
(yes, I know xfce)
and
sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc network-manager-openvpn pptp-linux
All of which were already installed. I found the firewall applet, turned off, no effect. I should note that I fiddle with my config (i.e. firmware router settings) more than seems appropriate, so could be related. pptp-linux is also installed. I think I am using LL 4.0 as I just ran apt-get upgrade yesterday. When I edit the connection, and try to enable the "Automatically connect to VPN", it lets me fill the check-box, but never saves nor does it allow me to use the pull-down options (may have to be set up first?).
Halp.

Hello,
In Chapter 15 of , The Linux Command Line, there is a command -
Code: sudo tail -f /var/log/messages
It should produce a list and then a SD card is added , it is an example of how the kernel will notice the device and probe it. I can follow the example in the book.
When I run this command (which is not an exercise in the book but I wanted to see it in action) I cannot get a result in terminal myself to then add a USB stick and watch this in action. Maybe the path needs to be different ?
Earlier in the Chapter I had read this -
"quote of Mr.Shotts - First let's look at how the system names devices. If we list the contents of the /dev directory (where all devices live), we can see that there are lots and lots of devices:
"
This gave me an idea to experiment using the above command, I was trying this below code to determine newly added device names by comparison -
My belief was it would show only those with sd naming using the wildcard *, I had learned previously in earlier chapters of "The Linux Command Line" about sd, and about using wildcard.
Below is a screenshot of my output, and source of my question
![[Image: Screenshot_2018_09_21_15_40_46.png]](https://preview.ibb.co/dT0EZz/Screenshot_2018_09_21_15_40_46.png)
As you can see I ran the code , I then inserted a USB stick and used up arrow on keyboard to reuse the same code and run it again, thus allowing for a comparison of before and after adding the USB stick.
It produced 2 new results the /dev/sdb and the /dev/sdb1 rather than the 1 new result I was expecting, why is this ?

I installed 1C software. 1C is program for managing processes in enterpise. Developed by Russian programmers. Problems occurs even on Windows OS. Well, i succesfully installed this program and can run as admin.
But i cant run program as another user! I tried different ways and got different errors.
1) Run icon appeared in menu - nothing happend (in task manager i see process only for 5 sec and then it dissapear)
2) Run "/opt/1C/v8.3/x86_64/1cv8c" in terminal (working for admin aswell) - error:
Original Code: Ошибка сегментирования (стек памяти сброшен на диск)
Translate Code: Error of segmentation (stack dropped to disk)
3) Run "sudo /opt/1C/v8.3/x86_64/1cv8c" in terminal - warning:
Code: 1cv8c:8865): IBUS-WARNING **: 12:03:35.834: The owner of /home/Пользователь/.config/ibus/bus is not root!
When i run same code as admin the same error appearing for me, but program start anyway!
I edited visudo:
Code: %users ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD:/opt/1C/v8.3/x86_64/1cv8c
I edited permissions i all directories related to 1C everywhere to allow edit and delete for everyone.
Assuming: admin and user typing the same code. Admin running program in any way. User can't start program at all. How to fix?

| USB with LL 3.8 not booting properly on Acer Chromebook C731 |

A friend donated a new Acer C731 chromebook to me to use with the youth I help in South Africa. Since we do not often have internet access I am wanting to convert it to run Linux Lite 3.8 like I have two other Chromebook, however I am battling to do so!
I have successfully loaded SeaBIOS (legacy boot) and set the gbb flags. OS verification is OFF and I have enabled USB booting.
However, when I put in my USB stick the boot menu gives me the option to boot from the USB, I choose it, the USB light flashes, a small Linux lite menu shows in the upper right corner (although the countdown to automatically launching does not countdown), I can choose run Linux lite, the LL feather logo comes up (to fill the screen) then after several seconds a black screen with some script shows for a very short period (I haven't yet been able to get a photo of what this script says, but will try) then it goes black and shows a flashing "-" and the light on the USB goes out. Nothing happens after that.
I have usb boot enabled on it as well "OS verification OFF". This same USB works when I put it in one of the other chrome books to confirm it works.
Any ideas of what I can do to get this Acer to allow the USB to boot so that I can load and then install LL if all is fine?
Thanks in advance, Janet
