Lite Upgrade from 3.8 to 4.0
Posted by: jakebob - 06-06-2018, 12:44 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (4)

In the past, I was able to click on "Lite Upgrade" to install the most recent version. When I try that now (with version 3.8), the message I get says, "you are already running the latest release." Will I eventually be able to upgrade to 4.0 using this method?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Bug, or non-intuitive behavior when mounting USB drive in multi-user LL?
Posted by: Vera - 06-05-2018, 06:56 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (3)

I'm not sure if the following issue would be considered a bug, or simply non-intuitive behavior of LL. Either way, if users in a multi-user setup are not aware of this, they may think they cannot mount their USB drives.

Here is the issue, which is consistently replicable for me under LL 3.8 and 4.0. I'll describe it from a colloquial first-person perspective, which is easier for me that saying "user 1" and "user 2".

1. The LL is set up to have me as main (admin) user, and two additional non-admin users for my family members.

2. The machine is booted up and my family member logs in under his account. I am not logged in at this point.

3. Then he says I can use it, so we switch users via the GUI "switch user" in the menu. He is not formally logged out at this point - he may want to come back to it soon. I'm just logging into my account, so I see my background, my icons, etc etc.

4. I insert my USB drive to get some files from it. Although the USB drive can be seen on my desktop, it is grayed out and it doesn't auto-mount. If I try to open it, I can't. A dialog box comes up saying something about "Failed to mount" and that some operation is already pending. Whatever I do, I can't seem to auto-mount the USB drive, until.....

5. I switch users via the GUI back to his account (I'm not formally logged out at this point). i.e. I simply have him go back into his account so that we can see his background, icons, etc etc. It turns out that the USB drive is seeking authentication to auto-mount there, instead of in my area. But I can only see this process when we switch back to his account, not mine. In other words, if you want to auto-mount a USB drive but you're not the first person to log in since the computer was started up, you won't auto-mount it that session.

SO TO SUM UP: I don't know if this is a bug or the expected behavior of Linux, but it seems odd that it won't let a currently-logged-in user (especially a logged-in admin user) auto-mount a USB drive if another user has logged in before them.

Is there an easy work-around for this issue? If not, it's OK, but users should be aware of it if they're on a multi-user system and wish to have a USB drive auto-mount.

Linux Lite 4.0: Firmware Bug notification on booting ...
Posted by: m654321 - 06-05-2018, 03:56 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Since installing LL4.0, I have been receiving a notification about a Firmware Bug, that always appears during booting, just before the grey screen appears.

The notification says:

Code:
[        0.000000] [Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata: please update microcode to version: 0x22 (or later)
Is this anything to be worried about?
How do I update the microcode to version 0x22 or later, or should I just ignore this notification?
Many thanks for any feedback on this - much appreciated.

Recommended way adding additional keyboard layouts?
Posted by: dihonomo - 06-05-2018, 12:43 PM - Forum: Desktop Customization - No Replies

After my successful migration to LL 4.0, I started converting a friend. It turned out he needs extra keyboard layouts besides the default "us" one. What would be the recommended (without breaking anything) way to achieve this?

  rainlendar2
Posted by: barnaby - 06-05-2018, 12:09 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

I have three computers, a desk top, a 17" laptop and a small laptop. They were all running LL 3.8. I use a package called rainlendar2 which is for a desktop calendar and event reminder. Probably no one on the forum has heard of it. This package ran happily on all three computers. Now I have upgraded the large laptop to LL 4.0 and suddenly, for no apparent reason, rainlendar2 just will not work. I have installed it via a deb file, and it reported that it was installed correctly. But, when I start it up nothing seems to happen. If I try again to see what happens I am asked if I want to start a second example as rainlendar2 seems to be already running. But there is no sign of it. If I run ps -e I can see a PID for it, so the computer seems to think it is running.

I really don't know where to look. Any suggestions please about where to go next please? I have not yet upgraded the desk top or the small laptop, so the package is working fine on them.

  Wine-rt issue
Posted by: Tobbe - 06-05-2018, 08:25 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

Hi,

Installed new version of Linux Lite (4.0) yesterday and KX repos. When I installed wine-rt and tried to start winecfg I get a message in terminal: internal error (and a long number). I have posted the same on linuxmusician forum also.

I went back to Lite 3.8 and everything is ok again.

Until v3.8 i had no problems with ll. Now with v4 my netbook takes up to 5 min to show the desktop. The good news are that when im inside, the speed is the one i had used to with the 3.8.

SFTP/SSH problem with Linux Lite 4.0: "welcome messages on non-login shells"
Posted by: Francois - 06-05-2018, 12:55 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Greetings!

Since upgrading to Linux Lite 4.0, I came across a nasty problem. I used to connect to my home server through FileZilla (SFTP with keyfile), but now I can't, as FileZilla shows no network activity immediately after successfully connecting.

I posted about the problem on the FileZilla forums with some verbose logging information, and the FileZilla author concluded that I "have some faulty shell script installed on the server that displays welcome messages on non-login shells".

To be honest, I have no idea what this could mean. Aside from the port / keyfile related settings and such, I have not changed much of the openssh configuration, nor I have set any kind of welcome message. Could this be related to the info that's now printed in a terminal when it is launched (one of Linux Lite 4.0's new features)?

Any kind of help would be very appreciated! Thank you for reading.

Problems installing 4.0 & no wifi
Posted by: Monkeyman - 06-05-2018, 12:21 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (5)

Just attempted to install 4.0 on my HP 2750p (2570p?) laptop. It's been a while since I've done much more than update the laptop as I was still on 3.6. (I began w/2.2.) I couldn't install via USB so I burned the image on a DVD and tried it that way. Never could get the wifi to work (that's a MUST as I have very limited access to hardwiring) and once I rebooted, the laptop reverted back to 3.6.
I'm sure there's something simple I missed for either issue but can't think of what it could be. Any suggestions, please?

  BIOS
Posted by: Monkeyman - 06-05-2018, 12:18 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (5)

While trying to install 4.0 on my HP 2750p, I ran into some issues trying to get it to boot from my USB stick. See the BIOS boot options below.

Legacy Boot Order:SD cardUSB floppyNotebook Upgrade BayNotebook Hard DriveUSB Hard DriveNotebook EthernetUSB CD-ROMeSATA Drive
I've always installed from a CD/DVD (which is what I'm doing now) but figured I'd see if I could install from thumb drive instead so I could save my blank DVDs. I don't have an SD card slot nor do I have a floppy drive. I tried booting from SD card, USB floppy and USB Hard Drive. None of them seemed to want to boot from the thumb drive. For future reference, are there any suggestions? I've been on LL since about 2.2 and have no intentions of going back to Windoze (on my laptop...UEFI on my desktop so I don't have much choice)
