Hi,

I recently blogged about few easy tweaks that could help low-end PC or laptops feel even faster and more responsive when running Linux Lite and wanted to share it with you all.

Hope you find it useful.

Cheers!

Request for additional Nouveau drives in Repository
Posted by: Ottawagrant - 05-06-2017, 01:37 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (3)

I have an Acer computer that, when it had Windows 7 on it, came with proprietary nVidia drivers. Here's the problem. The Nouveau driver with Linux Lite doesn't work. When you open up a web browser the system freezes & the graphics go crazy. The legacy nVidia driver (304) that you can add is OK, but not great. Graphics look washed out. When I install Xubuntu 16.04, or 17.04 the Nouveau driver that comes with that system work perfectly. As it & Linux Lite are both Ubuntu based, can those drivers be added to the Repository? Or perhaps a better question is, do they work with Linux Lite? Here's the information on that:
Here is the Linux Lite Drivers:
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0-12-1build2
Libdrm-nouveau2 2.4.70-1 ubuntu 16.04.1

Here are the Xubuntu 17.04 Drivers:
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0-14-Oubuntu1
Libdrm-nouveau2 2.4.76-1

I have no idea if these drivers will work with Linux Lite, but as always, thanks for considering it.

How do I check ink levels in my printer?
Posted by: m654321 - 05-06-2017, 05:56 AM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (4)

I use an Epson Stylus Photo R285 printer with LL3.4.
It contains six ink cartridges: 1 black + 5 other colours.

Until now, the only way of checking ink levels & identifying which ink cartridge need changing is to use the printer with WindowsOS.  Obviously this is unsatisfactory, as I'm when trying to move over to a WindowsOS-free system.

So how do I carry out printer ink management in LL3.4?

Many thanks in advance for all your ideas & help.

Mike

New here from FL with a few questions
Posted by: Nickman - 05-06-2017, 03:26 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (16)

Hello everyone, my name's Nickman and I've seen a few reviews of Linux Lite and I found it very nice, what Jerry and the team are doing is great.

I'm planning to do a little project with my HP Mini 110-1100 and install a Linux distro on it as opposed to having Windows 7 Starter on it, I plan to use it for college, writing essays and taking notes on it, things like that, nothing too extensive since it's around 8 years old and only has a 32 bit processor, it's a Intel Atom and has 2.70 Ghz, it has 1.00 GB of installed ram, though it may have more and I might not realize it.

I have a few questions

1. What are the differences between Linux Lite, Peppermint 7 and MX-16?
2. I understand that UEFI is not supported as of yet, or at least won't be until it is tested and confirmed to work sometime after the Diamond 4.0 release in June 2018, I'd have to disable UEFI on the computer for Linux lite to work correct?
3. Would I be able to print from a Canon MG 7720 printer or not since the computer is old?

  Cover panels with inactive windows
Posted by: maxheadroom - 05-05-2017, 03:52 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

Greetings

I am not a big fan of conky or cairo dock. Thus I try to get the looks of them with the help of panels. Unfortunately inactive windows do not cover panels.
With all windows reduced I gained very pleasing results. However, as soon as a window that covers a panel is set inactive, the result does not look nice.
Is there any way that inactive windows cover panels as well?

Update: inactive windows do not hide "intelligently hidden panels either. I abandon this topic.

After Install Update Files Will Not Install
Posted by: PinStripe - 05-04-2017, 08:27 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (11)

Why is it that after I installed 3.4 I went to install the update files and I got this message:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Linux Lite Updates couldn't fetch the package cache information lists.

Cannot check for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried several times now, yesterday and today to get these to install.
What do I need to do?

Volume control on XFCE panel missing
Posted by: Coastie - 05-04-2017, 03:33 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

I have unsuccessfully searched this forum and the internet with DuckDuckGo for a solution.

The volume control icon in the notification area of my XFCE panel has disappeared. In Add New Items the Notification Area is there but grayed out so I can not add a new one or modify my current one. I added PulseAudio Plugin but prefer the XFCE Volume Control. Has the PulseAudio Plugin replaced the XFCE plugin? If not, how do I get the XFCE one back?

  LL 3.4 No Swap
Posted by: Jocklad - 05-04-2017, 01:43 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

Just tried a little experiment.

A clean install of LL 3.4x64

This was a manual install with 50g allocated to / and 250g allocated to /home......no Swap

System fully installed and updated.

I run you tube and when checking htop it was using less than 1g of ram.

System ram is 4g.

Do we really need swap.....?.
