plan upgrade from 3.0 to 3.2
Posted by: n49er - 10-07-2016, 07:11 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (16)

I have 64-bit 3.0 linux lite installed on a desktop and 2 dual boot laptops.  In the linux partition, I have /, /home, and /swap in each of them.  I understand lite can be upgraded to a newer version within a series and I am aware of being able to do it easily from the utilities within the desktop.  However, it appears one has to have an internet connection available.  I am somewhat limited in my available bandwidth and this is what I'd like to know.  Can one download the latest linux lite version iso, burn it to a cd, then use that cd to upgrade from, rather than the internet?  I've searched the forums but so far but haven't seen this answered clearly.

Slimjet vs. Qupzilla - opinions on which is a 'safer' web browser?
Posted by: m654321 - 10-07-2016, 03:51 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (2)

In response to gold_finger and some other members, on the merits of Slimjet & QupZilla web browsers compared to Firefox, I had a go with both of these & compared them to Firefox for myself. I've been really impressed by their speed/snappiness in getting web pages up, compared to Firefox's lagginess when adblockers and/or other extensions are used.  I did try a third browser called 'Web' (formerly called Epiphany) but it was a bit too basic in its layout, though appears extremely light-touch too.

[size=1em]It seems to me that SJ has the edge over Qupzilla on general polish. However, as gold_finger pointed out, SJ is closed source whereas QupZilla is open source software.  Does this mean that we might know the risks of QupZilla (as code is freely available), but not of Slimjet (I assume it's a closely guarded secret??).  I'm wondering which is safer, e.g. privacy, malware, etc.  Does anyone have any personal views or experience on this... ???   What media player does Slimjet browser use?
Posted by: m654321 - 10-07-2016, 03:41 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (2)

I don't have adobe flashplayer on my PC so of course I'm unable to play certain online video clips in either Firefox or Qupzilla web browsers.
Interestingly, though where Firefox & Qupzilla fail, Slimjet appears capable - therefore it makes me ask does anyone know what media player Slimjet is using - is it generally known - might not be an easy question to answer as SJ is closed source software...?

Simple Saving Multiple SFTP And Samba Connections To Thunar
Posted by: trinidad - 10-07-2016, 02:01 PM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (7)

As we’ve gone along with these Linux Lite 3.x networking tutorials you may have created several SFTP and Samba connections using Thunar by now, and may be wondering what is the simplest way to keep track of them. It’s not too difficult to do once you become familiar with Thunar, so we will now go through the simplest steps for creating active bookmarks for Thunar in Linux Lite 3.x. I do it this way myself, and have multiple connections saved to one of my laptops. This simple tutorial does not cover settings for using multiple ssh listening addresses, multiple networks, and multiple keys, and does not apply to older versions of Thunar, but it should be enough to get you started with a simple way to keep track of your multiple connections on a single network in Thunar itself in Linux Lite 3.x.

To begin open up Thunar on your Linux Lite desktop. Click on >View in the upper window menu. Scroll down and highlight >Side Pane and from the menu that appears check the >box to the left of Shortcuts. Scroll down in the same menu and check the >box to the left of Show Hidden Files.

Now find the folder named .config and click on it to open it up. Next find the folder named gtk-3.0 and click on it to open it up. Click on the text file >Bookmarks that appears and it will open in Leafpad. On the first line below  - computer:/// Drives -  type in the connection you want to save in the following format examples, either-  sftp://192.168.0.5 or- smb://192.168.0.5 putting each new connection on its own line below the other. When you are done adding your connections click on >File in the upper window menu, and scroll down and click >Save and your changes will be saved, then scroll down and click >Quit and Leafpad will close.

Now you can rename your connections that have appeared under Places in the side pane of Thunar from the GUI in Thunar with a simple method that allows upper and lower case character names. Right click on each connection in the side pane and select >rename and enter names, i/e, Mom’s PC, Kid’s PC, Camera, Security, or whatever your case may be.

You should now have all your connections named, and listed in your Thunar side pane. Now carefully right click on the divider >Places in the side pane and a menu will appear with >Devices >Places and >Network listed. Scroll to and highlight >Places and another menu will appear with a list of your places with check boxes next to them. To hide your connections for convenience in the case you have several connections and don’t want the clutter, (to make them not show up in the side pane)  simply uncheck the boxes. To find them again in Thunar when you need to use them just right click on the >Places separator again, and go through the routine to raise the menu checking which connection you want to use.

Having a problem with Unetbootin on LL 3.0x64
The ISO will burn to usb flash, but at the end at reboot the system freezes.

Tried the same ISO on LL 2.8 and it was fine.

Dont know if this is a LL 3.0 problem or a Unetbootin prob,or a combination of both.

SSD only recognised as an HDD on an old Toshiba laptop
Posted by: m654321 - 10-07-2016, 11:02 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (4)

[size=1em]I'm setting up a Windows Vista laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro A300) with LL3.0 (single boot) for my sister.[/size]
[size=1em]I've replaced the original HDD with an SDD (Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3, 240GB).[/size]

[size=1em]However, both in the Computer Settings, under the heading 'boot' (F2 key press), and output from the inxi command in LL's terminal show the above SSD listed as an HDD... Is the PC failing to recognise the SSD, because the BIOS may be out-of-date? The BIOS version that came preinstalled is listed in Settings as version 1.6.[/size]

[size=1em]Here is the output from LL's terminal:[/size]

Code:
marie@marie-Satellite-Pro-A300:~$ inxi
CPU~Dual core Intel Pentium Dual T2390 (-MCP-) speed/max~1067/1867 MHz Kernel~4.4.0-38-generic x86_64 Up~6 min Mem~530.4/1990.7MB HDD~240.1GB (2.4% used) Procs~201 Client~Shell inxi~2.2.35
[size=1em]Is it possible to update the BIOS in LL, or can this only be done in Windows OS?  I have downloaded a BIOS update but this is in a *.zip file suggesting that I can only do the BIOS update in Windows OS...? I only have experience of updating BIOS in Windows 7 or 8.1, but not in Linux.[/size]

An app wants to create new keyring called 'Default Keyring' @time I open browser
Posted by: m654321 - 10-07-2016, 09:40 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (8)

I've installed LL3.0 as the only operating system on my sisters's 8-year old Vista laptop, a Toshiba Satellite Pro A300. The LL install & updating, etc, went very well. I've chosen Slimjet, instead of Firefox, as it seems to be significantly less laggy as an internet browser, following gold_finger and one or two members pointing out its merits elsewhere on this forum.

However, each time I open Slimjet, I am pestered by the following popup message & have to click on the cross each time to close it down. Very annoying. As far as I know, I've never created or needed a 'default keyring' before in any LL setup.

The popup message is as follows:
"Choose password for new keyring
An application wants to create a new keyring called 'Default Keyring'. Choose a password you want to use for it."

[size=1em]Below the message are Cancel and Continue buttons.  [/size]
[size=1em]How do I get rid of this annoying popup? [/size]

[size=1em]Thanks for your help[/size]

  Linux Lite 3.2 Beta Released
Posted by: valtam - 10-05-2016, 08:16 AM - Forum: Release Announcements - Replies (44)

Release Announcement

Linux Lite 3.2 Beta is now available for testing. There have been a number of changes since the 3.0 release. See below for all the changes.

Lite Desktop Widget - A new optional feature that displays basic system information, including Updates Status that reports the last time you installed Updates. A portion of the code for this widget was outsourced, so thank you to those who support and donate to Linux Lite. To enable this after installation, go to Menu, Settings, Session and Startup, Application Autostart tab, tick Lite Desktop Widget.  Logout then Login again, the widget will appear at the bottom right hand corner of your screen after a few seconds of logging into your Desktop. If you want transparency for the widget, go to Menu, Settings, Window Manager Tweaks, Compositor tab, tick Enable display compositing. The Updates Status will refresh information every 5 minutes eg. 5 minutes after you update, the status will change to Your system was recently updated providing there were any updates installed.

The Lite Desktop Widget shows 5 stages of Status (color coded messages):

Red - system is overdue for updates, update now
Green - system was updated within the last 3 days
Yellow - a reminder that it's time to update your system

1. System never updated - displayed after a fresh install of Linux Lite
2. Your system was recently updated - will display 5 minutes after updates have been applied
3. 6hrs since your last update - hourly update reminders
4. 4 days since your last update - after the 3rd day, the reminder will turn yellow
5. 8 days since your last update - after the 7th day, the reminder will turn red

Grub - Linux Lite should now multi boot with other distros, whilst remaining easily distinguishable to Windows folks in a dual boot environment. I look forward to your feedback in regard to these changes.

How to eliminate mouse issue; I think it's a driver or software problem
Posted by: HereNow - 10-04-2016, 04:20 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Hi,

Is there a self step-by-step procedure I can go through to eliminate hardware/application/driver/operating system issues?  Especially so that I can best google a solution to a problem.  That's kind of the general question, but I'm kind of looking for a general flow of operations, in addition to finding an answer to my specific issue.

Here is my specific question:

When I first installed LL 3.0, the mouse worked extremely well and was fully responsive.  I went through the full session with no slowdown, except when I had too many browser windows open, which is my weakness because I'm always "opening in new tabs".

But each time I've logged in, the mouse has gotten a little more slower and now it frequently gets frozen.  Also I've noticed that the problem occurs earlier and earlier in my session, to the point it is frozen almost immediately after turning the computer on and even when the computer is supposedly idle.  However, the graphics still appear to update at the correct rate, the keyboard can still type, and I can open a terminal using the keyboard shortcut.

How can I eliminate each possible reason, starting with the least dramatic (what a regular user can do) to most dramatic (sudu & use with extreme caution, but still reasonable), for this situation.
