Hanging at password entry after upgrade

I have just run the upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 - there were several System Program failures and at the end a screen showed that the upgrade had failed. However the system is indeed 16.04.1 LTS even though several packages were missing (Gparted, Pulse Audio, etc)
But at the first attempt to boot up the system I enter my password and nothing happens - simply the "Logging in ..." mention.
How can I break into a terminal from this screen? Or force the system into some sort of life. All the alternative boot entries are 16.04.1 so I can't go back to 14.04.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Quadro FX Go 1440 lower resolutions (1920x1200 native, 1440x900 preferred)

Hi, I have recently installed LL 3.0 on my family's Dell Precision M70 laptop (Intel Pentium M 740) which contains a Quadro FX Go 1440 nvidia card and with the install of latest legacy binary drivers (304...) through install drivers menu I have the option to use the preferred 1440x900 resolution instead of the 1920x1200 which just looks way too small on the screen. However my issue is that it does not actually set it to 1440x900 where the screen fits the resolution. Rather it seems the OS is still fully at 1920x1200 but shows only 1440x900 portion of it with the mouse scrolling the rest of the screen as it reaches the edge. How do I solve this so that the resolution is *actually* 1440x900 without scrolling the screen?

Toshiba Satellite Pro A300: Fn+F6 & Fn+F7 (screen brightness) not working

Have just set up LL3.0 on my sister's Toshiba Satellite Pro A300 - I've got a problem with the screen brightness control - the Fn key combinations for changing screen brightness (in a continuous fashion) are not working, i.e. Fn+F6, decrease; Fn+F7, increase brightness.
In an attempt to fix this I did the following, in the terminal, using gksudo leafpad /etc/default/grub:
changed GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi="

This didn't work so the next thing I tried was...

changed GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"
This didn't work either.
I'd be grateful for any help on this, as full-screen brightness can be really tiring in the evening, as you know only too well, and the f.lux app (f.lux alters the quality & intensity of the PC screen's backlighting as a function of the time of day), which I use routinely on my setups, doesn't seem to function - I assume this is related to the screen brightness problem.
Thanks in advance for any help on this one...

HDMI screen wont recover after being unplugged or turned off

Found out this in latest 3.0 (this issue didn't exist in 2. 8)
I have a NUC with a HDMI screen connected.
Everytime I turn it off or I switch input, or the HDMI cable gets unplugged, it seems that X disables itself (HDMI: No input signal), even when reconnecting or turning on monitor, or switching back.
Only way to recover is to CTRL+ALT+F1, log in, and then "startx".
