  So much ignorance and hate?
Posted by: Zead - 10-11-2015, 11:57 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (5)

What's wrong with all those Windows users saying GNU/Linux is only good for web browsing?

Every time I enter some operating system article's discussion, and someone says something good about GNU/Linux, Windows users downvote him to hell, and say garbage like "Linux is good only for web browsing, and it has many security holes, look at Google's Android which is Linux too! So many security holes! Windows blah blah blah".

Seriously... Comparing Android to systems like Ubuntu, Fedora, Mageia, Arch, Linux Lite? So much ignorance.

English / worldwide websites are better towards GNU/Linux. But people in my Europe country are like Windows brainwashed. If 1 individual say something good about it, he will instantly get downvoted rapidly.

I'm using GNU/Linux since February only, but I feel free, I can do anything to my system, and on it. If I want to use some Win software, I can use Wine. And it's not the GNU/Linux's problem that devs are not releasing as many games for Linux as for Windows.

What's your experience?

  Boot logo change

Does anyone know if and how I can change the feather logo that appears when booting LL2.6. My users dislike it and would prefer something a bit less depressing.

Why do I have these packages listed as local or obsolete? (Python 3.4)
Posted by: Zead - 10-10-2015, 11:23 AM - Forum: On Topic - No Replies

I didn't install them manually or anything. I didn't upgrade them through PPA and then removed the ppa.. I didn't do anything with these packages. The only thing I did was installing and then removing libtiff4

I was installing some CANON printer drivers.

  [Solved] Chromium browser crashes system
Posted by: paul1149 - 10-09-2015, 03:54 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Hi guys,

I've had a fairly serious problem here for a couple of weeks. I use the Slimjet browser, which is built on Chromium. SJ usually runs a bit behind the latest Chromium release so that the author can make sure there are no conflicts with his additions to the core. This was exacerbated due to the "OK google" mess, in which google added the ability to listen to the user without telling him. That caused SJ to hold off on updating the core for several weeks until recently.

So I was fine on SJ 4.15 for a long time. But when v 5 just came out, it totally took down my LL 2.6 x64 system. I could move the mouse pointer, but nothing worked.  It would hang the GPU, especially when I tried to access certain menu functions, such as Settings or More Tools. Eventually the system would go into text mode and then crash (see pic).

I tried three different v 5 releases, and all did the same thing, though uptime went from 30 seconds to maybe 5 minutes. Uninstalling the older SJ version did not help.

I began to think my SJ profile was corrupted, so created a new one. Didn't help.

Finally I installed Chromium from the Synaptics PM. I thought the problem was solved until half an hour ago. When I went to access a text size drop-down menu in a composition box, it manifested in total black - the sign that the GPU was locking up. Surprisingly the system was able to recover from that, possibly because the menu was small. But this told me that the problem is not simply Slimjet, it is with Chromium as well.

Does anyone have any clue what is going on and what might be done about it? There are a lot of useful features in SJ that I would not like to lose. And now I'm walking on eggshells even with Chromium.

Thanks!

  New Build - RAID Question..??
Posted by: Wirezfree - 10-08-2015, 03:46 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (11)

Hi,

Probably one for the dev's..??
A friends ask me to look at putting together a "Mini i7 PC" bare bones with LL on it.
((It's new, only 4 review's, 3 are running Linux on it.))

It's got 2 X mSATA slots, and he asked if it's possible to do a "RAID 0" set-up on them,
for improved throughput, but at the loss of redundancy. So put the OS across 2 X 120GB SSD's

How to view active Wifi , from LL2.4
Posted by: darrell derrick - 10-07-2015, 11:53 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (8)

I would like to view the active Wifi carriers with in range of my laptop . I have a Dell D620, with Broadcom 1430 card installed. I have 2 extra PCMCIA adapter cards , that I used before I solved my Broadcom problems. One is  Belkin, the other TrendNet. I used to use the Belkin supplied soft ware to do this in Win XP . Is there a Linux way to do this. Thanks Darrell.

  Full X11R6 and Linux Lite
Posted by: jhl - 10-07-2015, 02:16 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Hi to all,
The question is: is it possible to have X11 with all libs and tools under Linux Lite.
I need to install a program, which demands such things like OSF.Motif commands, Locale, libraries, etc.
My little comp started with Linux Lite and I like it so much that expanded it with all accessible software for some functionalities from deb sources.
I have not  found X11R6 in the available binaries in the sources.
So perhaps it should be compiled from source, and installed in some place like /usr/local.
Has anyone tried, succeeded or failed, or has any idea on the topic or experience how to have full X11R6 in Linux Lite?
Asking for you help,
Jerzy
