  Disappointed with Linux Lite already
Posted by: john9159 - 10-07-2014, 09:48 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (14)

I've been using Linux Lite for about two weeks out of necessity as internet access using Windows XP suddenly stopped on my laptop. Re-installing XP did not solve the problem.
I am reluctant to buy a new laptop/pc or to buy a new operating system such as Windows 7.

I am very disappointed so far with Linux as I am experiencing various problems, namely the following:

Cannot use AOL as my default browser as it is not compatible with Linux. This is necessary as AOL is my internet provider and I need access to my “favourite” folders which are not available via Firefox or any other medium.

Cannot use Yahoo Messenger. I am unable to install this as it is not compatible with Linux.

I am always asked to select the “language for import” when using Excel spreadsheet.

I am unable to read information being typed in the search bar as this is always blacked out.

I cannot use certain website such as the National Lottery in the UK, where I live, as I get a warning that I appear to reside outside of the UK.

Any suggestions for alternative free operating systems to Linux or Ubuntu which are more reliable?

  Wine
Posted by: Alex - 10-07-2014, 06:55 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (13)

Please don't ask me why; but a while ago I uninstalled Wine. Now it wont re-install, not from "install additional software" or from the Synaptic PM. I even uninstalled it from the Synaptic PM first ( it was showing as being still there) and re-installed it but did not work. I don't get wine showing up in the Menu, if I search for it I get "Run wine" and clicking on this produces no result at all.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

  Hello and Thank You
Posted by: dby - 10-07-2014, 05:47 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (6)

Hello everyone.

I joined a week or so ago to ask a question about the recent Bash vulnerability. I got an helpful reply from Scott and consequently upgraded to 2.0 but I thought I'd drop an introduction and thank you here.

I moved to Linux Lite back in April when Microsoft withdrew security updates for XP. Searching You Tube for a solution, I came across the videos of 'Puppy Linux World', who recommended Linux Lite as a replacement for XP and it's run faultlessly since being installed.

Without the work of Valtam and the team here at Linux Lite, this old PC might have ended up as scrap, so Linux Lite also helps the environment!

As one who struggles to put together a few lines of Python or VBA, I'm constantly amazed by the developers who give us these operating systems and applications. So a thank you to all here, for giving us the benefit of your knowledge and skills freely.

Regards
dby

Re-use of IT infrastructure and Linux Lite
Posted by: Dookus - 10-07-2014, 09:52 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (4)

I have been endeavouring to start a Non Profit Group or organisation in Sydney Australia for some time, there are a few things happening and as I find people who can help and can get on board I have found no other distro that can not only run successfully on the machines donated, but also attract favour with those who use these re-employed machines, Many of which in my view are excellent every day work horses that can do the Facebook/word processing/email stuff, but also play high def video or even create something without a problem, even that would be resource heavy when a Windows App is used within Windows, on machine no more endowed than a p4 2ghz 1 gig ram or equivalent.

By the way, if anyone in the Sydney Australia region wants to get involved in the creation of a group such as this, let me know, it will hopefully become something that will bring about some employment and be a lot of fun for those at the grass roots of this venture..

  Can't find old HDD
Posted by: Monkeyman - 10-07-2014, 07:27 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (24)

I have an old HDD that has some data I'd like to access.  I've installed it in an external enclosure but I can't find it on the computer.  (Yes.  I've plugged it in.  Smile )  Where do I find it?  In Windows, I could look under "Computer" but I don't see anything like that here.  I'm sure there's a simple answer but like my brother Forrest said, "I'm not a smart man.".

TIA

PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards & Linux Lite
Posted by: N4RPS - 10-06-2014, 11:40 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

Hello, All!

Some of my older laptops have only one USB port, or support only USB 1.1. For the Dell Latitude C640, both of these apply. At the same time, the C640 also has one or two unused PCMCIA slots available.

Having found a cheap used PCMCIA 2.0 card at my local computer surplus store, I stuck it into the C640. The Linux kernel recognizes and supports these cards, or at least the one I purchased - a Zonet ZUN2200.

This card adds two USB 2.0 slots.  This offers a 10X increase in the USB data transfer rate, and allows the use of newer USB 3.0 devices at USB 2.0 speed, as many USB 3.0 devices won't work on USB 1.1 ports.

For high demand accessories, the card also supports a plug-in cable to power the new slots from the USB 1.1 port, or an external 5 VDC power supply...

Reinstalling LL after losing wifi due to installing updates
Posted by: AZ - 10-06-2014, 11:04 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (31)

Linux Lite: 2.0
I'm trying to reinstall LL on my hard drive after losing wifi due to installing updates. When I go to install LL using the CD, I have the option to install LL alongside Windows XP. I've already installed LL alongside XP. I don't want two LL operating systems & XP installed. I want to reinstall LL over the existing LL. I believe, I have to delete one of the partitions (number 5) but it won't let me. I need to know which partition to delete. Below are my partitions on my hard drive. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
