Nouveau driver works better than in Ubuntu, how could it be possible?
Posted by: paulados - 09-18-2014, 09:16 AM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (3)

Hi,

I have used Ubuntu for some years and I like it because is really user friendly. However, I have a (not so) old computer (AMD Sempron, 2GB RAM and GeForce 4) and as there is no Nvidia drivers support I had to use Nouveau or vesa driver. The problem was that Ubuntu with nouveau drivers gives me a lot of problems (icons disappearing, suddenly crashes and system block).

Thus, I try to use it using nouveau without acceleration or vesa driver. However, Ubuntu was too heavy for my computer. I found your distro and I dediced to try it. As in Ubuntu, I had to use nouveau drivers in my computer. However, in this case when I start using nouveau drivers with acceleration, I had no issues. Everything works perfectly. No icon vanish, no crashes nor blocks.

So, I would like to thank your team and I also would like to know if you have applied any change (respect to Ubuntu) to nouveau driver, to Xorg or to Xfce so that it is more stable than in Ubuntu, or where/how could I check it.

Thanks !!!  ;D

  From Ubuntu to Linux Lite
Posted by: paulados - 09-18-2014, 08:58 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (3)

Hi,

I have used Ubuntu for some years at work, but at home I usually used Windows XP. Now, I am searching for alternatives as I have a (not so) old computer (AMD Sempron, 2GB RAM and GeForce 4) and Windows 7 is not a good alternative for such as computer and Ubuntu does not support my graphic card and it is too heavy for my old computer.

Thus, I have arrived at Linux Lite some days ago and I am really amazing by the result. I have not tested it too much, but I think it could become my operating system for the next years  Big Grin

  Problems with mkv media files.
Posted by: Alex - 09-18-2014, 01:28 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (8)

I have had a lot of problems playing .mkv files on vlc media player, the only player that sort of worked was the Kaffeine player, but there was always a loss of sound synchronization - this could be adjusted 'on the fly' using the left and right arrows in quick succession. but a bit of a pain.

I think that the problem maybe that my computer just does not have the RAM for it (the media file was ~3.8Gb I only have 2 GB RAM)...would I be correct in that assumption? And is there anyway that I could use a USB drive or part of my HD as  'temporary' RAM?'.

I used to have the same problems with this type of file on Win XP as well, which indicates that it is not a problem with LL.

Thanks

New user here..

I had the software running good, I then installed the updates and it just seemed to fall apart.  No, wifi, it started running S L O W and the machine would not shut down..  I spent hours trying to fix it.  The only hope is to reinstall, but I am afraid that once I try to update it will only do the same thing again..

I tried to honestly to like Linux Lite... but this is too nerve racking...  :-\

...strange how simple ideas can turn into something respectable...here are some examples of filter and layer work with the gimp. Have no prior image editing experience so these are first attempts...found "ctrl z" is now a good friend of mine.

Engineer - New user switching from XP
Posted by: engineer - 09-16-2014, 08:19 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (5)

Hello,

I installed Linux Lite yesterday and look forward to hopefully transitioning to Linux full time in the near future.  This is my very first experience with a Linux OS, and the process is somewhat daunting.  One of the main reasons for the transition is that I really like what I see in the Linux community, you guys and gals are amazing.  Consequently, I have become disappointed and frustrated with Microsoft and their business practices.  It is obviously time for me to make a change and support (YOU) and Linux.

My issue right now is software compatibility.  I am a Civil Engineer and have been using Bentley Microstation as my Civil Design software.  To my disappointment,  I telephoned Bentley and their software is not compatible with Linux.  So this will require a new software package to learn, on top of learning Linux.  I did find one CAD software company, BricsCAD, that supports Linux, however I can not find a third party Civil Design package that will run on Linux.    So.... what to do?

It looks like I will have to continue using XP and Microstation until I can find a Civil Design Package that will run on Linux.  It is hard to believe that I am the only engineer facing this issue?  Surely other engineer want to utilize and support Linux and ditch Microsoft?    Time will tell..

Thank You!

engineer
