Dell Optiplex 740 fails to load Linux Lite
Posted by: Norm - 06-29-2014, 03:07 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (15)

Tried to install from USB stick to my old Dell Optiplex 740 which is currently running Windows 7. I get the initial LL feather and automatic boot in #seconds then it faults to 'Not enough memory to load specified image' which then gets stuck in a loop of the same thing until I Ctrl alt del.

I have used the pen drive succesfully on another computer.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Note: unfamiliar with linux

Hi from PEI, in Atlantic Canada
Posted by: myrddin - 06-29-2014, 01:05 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (3)

Hi everyone, from a retired IT manager on Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada..
I last touched UNIX about 15 years ago, running a large manufacturing system.. I am now in my "golden years" (the big 70th birthday a few months ago), and I received a laptop with Windows 8.(If Microsoft made a vacuum cleaner it would also suck !!!..Not my quote ) I now have a extremely responsive laptop, running Linux Lite 2.0.. I first went to Linux Mint (Cinnamon), polished, but "heavy", even on the SSD. Next, to the other extreme, Bodhi Linux..Amazingly fast, but a "tad" too minimalist, and lacking in some areas..Then to Manjaro, again very fast, but just not a comfortable experience. The Linux Lite development team, has my sincerest congratulations on such a polished release, that, as a user, gives me a comfortable and secure feeling. It boots up so quickly on my SSD, that the screen is fully loaded, before the WIFI has a chance to connect. It is so refreshing to be away from "Window" clutter, and to have such a clean desktop... Right clicking on the desktop, to bring up a menu has an certain intuitive feel to it. It could be argued that with the specs on my laptop, that I don't need a "lightweight" installation. My argument for Linux Liite, would be to point out that the applications included with the install, are anything but 'lightweight', and I can add whatever "eye candy" I would like to the desktop, (if I wanted to..which I don't). There is a world of difference between a "Minimalist" installation, and Linux Lite. The former is very fast, because it has very little installed, the latter is also very fast (responsive would be more appropriate.."fast is too subjective) because it was designed to be, and not because it has been just stripped to the bare bones, necessary to boot up. I want a clean uncluttered desktop, in conjunction with a set of quality applications, and a very responsive system. That is what I now have !
Oh, BTW, the touch screen on the laptop works perfectly (not that I have really found much use for it). My German Shepherds' nose also works really well on the screen.!!!
Once again, Kudos to the Development Team, and I look forward to future developments,
Kind of a long introduction,
Regards and have a great week,
Richard Morris

  Hi from an old guy

As an older person I sometimes struggle with new technology having been educated with slide rule etc. With this in mind I hope to elicit some help with a slight (I hope) problem with the auto update software function post installation. When it asks for my password, I type but nothing happens, the cursor blinks but no characters appear on the screen. If I try to type my password and hit return it says error. I did read a thread about this but being Terminalphobic I didnt get it! Anyways thanks and hi all.

  Struggling to install via USB
Posted by: skar - 06-29-2014, 08:34 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (15)

I was trying to install linux lite on my acer aspire v5 laptop. its a pretty beefy laptop and a recent one. I've been using windows 8.1 and ubuntu on it side by side. Now I want to install just linux lite. I tried the windows utily, win32diskimager. That does not work. It just corrupts the usb or the usb wont show up on the boot menu. The linux commands did not work on ubuntu either. I tried unetbootin and universalusbinstaller, where i got some success by booting in, but the installer would fail at grub install stage. Kind of expected as I was using ubuntu boot images...

I really want to install the OS as my main OS, as I was impressed by its performance on virtualbox.

Any help is much appreciated.

What makes a good distro great...or not?
Posted by: davesurrey999 - 06-28-2014, 01:41 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (5)

I offer this opinion in the hope of improving Linux Lite's reputation and success in being used by more and more Windows refugees. Please don't read it as a whinge.

I help run a very successful venture which aims to teach computers and the internet to the over 50s and those of a low income or disability. We have been very successful to date with over 1400 clients. The demise of Windows XP support has meant many of our clients need to change away from XP but cannot afford a new PC.  Even those that can afford a new PC don't like Windows 8. Hence I decided that Linux Lite could be an ideal solution.

Answering my question above, I believe Linux Lite is great as it works well, offers just the right amount of useful programs, and looks good as well. But...I am not sure I can suggest LL2 as I am concerned with the level of support.

Specifically I have had 3 issues that relate to LL2, and not a specific application where I could get help by Google, and none of these have been resolved. In fact 2 have not received any reply to date.

The biggest issue I have now is getting a CD or DVD to auto-run. Linux Mint and some other distros I have tried use an app to set the preferred multimedia application but not LL2. I'd be happy to use the CLI to set it up but am not familiar with XFCE and need help. Asking a senior citizen to go through a process of multiple clicks and navigation just to play a CD/DVD is a none starter.

I also asked about LL2 not working with Grub2. I believe that the devs' main objective is to replace Windows but that doesn't mean folk don't need to dual boot. For example there are programs/games etc that don't need internet access but won't run on Linux (not even in Wine) so some clients need a dual boot with XP (with networking disabled for safety) for some programs and Linux to access the net. Okay I have set them up with a grub stanza manually but it is a worry that there is an issue which stops it working in grub2 as it should.

I wont go on but I hope I have made my point that without good support in here for LL2 related issues (not general app issues which Google/Ubuntu forums etc can resolve) LL2 will not be as successful as it could be.

If this can be improved somehow, then I for one will make use of LL2 and in return will be glad, as I learn it more, to offer up support myself to the forum.

Thank you for listening.
Dave

Suggestion needed on VNC Server issue
Posted by: gra_ulv - 06-27-2014, 09:55 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (7)

Started a new job as IT Director. About half the workstations are Windows XP and only access a web application and use Libre Office. They use CutePDF to print things as PDF files occasionally. These workstations are at remote sites and currently have TightVNC Server on them. That is how we offer remote assistance for issues. I want to replace these XP workstations with Linux Lite. The only thing I don't have is a replacement for the VNC server.

Will Vino work with Linux Lite?
Will this work? http://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/remote-des...14-04/1640
Or does anyone have a good or better suggestion?
