Hi All
A pleasure to meet you.
Never been on a forum before and my linux/unix experience stretches all the way back to yesterday so sorry if I am having trouble with the blindingly obvious. I'm also an old guy and the the jargon and TLAS'a are a bit of a stretch at times so I crave your collective indulgence. I've been back throgh the archive for the last year with no similar problems which gives me some confidence I am just missing something simple (who said a brain?) which smarter people just fix.
To horse so to speak. I loaded Linux Lite yesterday onto an old Samsung N140 notebooke after speaking to the village evangelist (for LL) and it was a breeze. Much faster than W7 for start-up, the internet and all the things you already know better than me.
I keep all my data on a D-Link 323 NSA (Raid 1)so I hooked up following the instructions on the site. No problem so far. In use the device is recognised and I can access the NSA and navigate the file structure.
If I try to load a JPG by clicking on it or opening using using image viewer I get no error message but also no picture. If I do the same using GIMP I can see the thumbnail but get an error message which tells me that the folder and file don't exist and the thumbnail is out of date. If I navigate to the same picture from within image viewer I can view it. No joy with GIMP though. With documents I can't get anywhere. Libreoffice loads and then vanishes whichever way I come at it. Most of the documents, some .odt some .doc were created using open office. I copied a document to the laptop and Libreoffice opened it fine. I have had some limited joy with PDF's. Sorry about the bad language but my Windows computers access all of the files with no trouble so it is not a data corruption problem.
I would really appreciate a nudge in the right direction.
Sorry to a be a bit long winded but we wrinklies never know when to stop....

Hey all
Been using LL for a few days, it's great.
No bloat, nice and smooth and not buggy.
Which is what i wanted after 14.04LTS and the not so good software centre.
I'll be staying with this distro. 8)

I noticed that if you edit the menus applications and click restore it adds an extra empty Internet menu. Also it is adding programs that I have uninstalled, how do I fix this.

I was trying to clear the annoying Skype icon from the notification area (near keyboard and battery monitor icons) and inadvertently deleted the volume control icon. I can't find any way to restore it to the panel. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks

I tried installing Slimboat Browser, which I have found is a very good lightweight browser, using Gdebi, but though it shows in my applications menu, it will not open.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem.

Hello fellows,
I was curious rather lately at search tools for the desktop taskbar. I know there a few applications out there but it basically stems from when I curious about things and want to search firefox without opening the window.
I.e. my process is to click firefox button then type in search bar and then search.
What I would like to do is search using a built-in search bar on the task bar like I had in XP, does anyone have suggestions on what would be the perfect program please? You see I'm not so bothered about files and folders just a quick link to searching on the web.
Ideas and opinions most appreciated thanks! 8)

Hi Guys
Total Linux Newbie here.
I've been haunted by Windows 8 issues ... Apples are too expensive ... so I've decided see why life the Penguins is rated so highly.
I like the idea of a Light OS and, fingers crossed, I'll be able to breath some life into some old machines. Hopefully this old Orchardist turned Jam Maker wont annoy everyone all at the same time!
As a small aside, I was reading about Linux and Viruses this morning and really like the reason why Linux machines need Anti-Virus programs ... to make sure any file that is passed on to a Windows based machine is clean! That sort of outward facing logic appeals to me.
Cheers
Tony
