  get_iplayer File Format
Posted by: AL13N - 06-10-2014, 11:18 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

A heads-up for anyone looking to install the get_iplayer application.

Installing get_iplayer via the Synaptic Package Manager (Install/Remove Software) resulted in downloads being saved to .flv format.

Installing via PPA* resulted in downloads being saved to .mp4 and .m4a (AAC) formats for video and audio respectively.

Either Synaptic Package Manager is not automatically installing additional dependencies required for encoding, or the get_iplayer version in Ubuntu repositories is out of date or broken.

If you are both downloading and watching/listening on your computer then this is not a problem - VLC and other media players will play .flv files.

But if you plan on playing the downloads elsewhere (TV, mobile devices) then the .mp4/.m4a formats are much more widely supported.

  Help Manual now searchable
Posted by: valtam - 06-10-2014, 05:38 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - No Replies

A major new feature has been added to the Help Manual - it is now searchable. This will save people a lot of time by simply entering the information they are looking for. Run Install Updates to get the latest version of the Help Manual. Your computer must be online to get results.

How to get the ndiswrapper to work on an old wireless adapter card
Posted by: AndyOpie150 - 06-09-2014, 09:17 PM - Forum: Tutorials - No Replies

First make sure your wireless cards Driver folder with the LSTINDS.INF file (or what ever your .INF file is) is in your home folder.

Then in a terminal type in:

Code:
sudo su
apt-get install ndisgtk

Open up ndisgtk (might be labeled "wireless drivers")
Follow the prompts.

If using the ndiswrapper packages in the synaptic package manager does not work:
What worked for me on my old SONY VAIO all in one desktop, was the ndiswrapper-1.58. I managed to find a link here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ndiswra....58.tar.gz.

Put it in the home folder.
Open up terminal and type in:
Code:
tar xzf ndiswrapper-1.58.tar.gz -C /home/(username)

Then open up the ndiswrapper-1.58 folder and right click on an open area. Select to "open terminal here".
Then type in:
Code:
sudo make uninstall
make
sudo make install

No open up terminal in the home folder and type in:
Code:
sudo ndiswrapper -i (exact name of driver folder)/(exact name/and or path inside the driver folder of/to the .INF file)
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
sudo su
echo ndiswrapper >> /etc/modules
exit

If everything installed with no errors, then reboot.
After reboot configure your network (keeping in mind that ndiswrapper only allows for WEP network security).
I ended up setting up a guest network on the router with just WEP security for my old wireless adapter card

Had a little bit of a struggle with the old IBM ThinkPad G40. Install of ndiswrapper-1.58 and 1.59 kept erroring out.

I dropped back to a set of ndiswrapper-1.57 packages I had saved from an install of Xubuntu back in 2012.
Installed the ndiswrapper-common, and the ndiswrapper-utils with no problem using terminal and "sudo dpkg -i (full name of package)".

Had dependency problem with the dkms. Downloaded and tried to install the gcc, but it to had dependency problems, so I opened up the synaptic package manager and used the broken pakage filter to install the gcc and then the dkms.
Was able to then install the ndiswrapper-dkms using terminal with no problem (this made the all important module).

If you had problems with the ndiswrapper-1.58 and 1.59 then let me know and I will upload the ndiswrapper-1.57 packages to my Mediafire account and post link.

Note: Before trying a different ndiswrapper you must first type in this from a terminal:
Code:
sudo su
ndiswrapper -e lstinds

  Yet another new user

Hi, just installed Linux Lite 2.0 on my desktop pc and found a link to this forum in the Help Manual. My previous experience with Linux amounts to having briefly tried Ubuntu then Mint 16, shortly after which the (old) hard drive began to fail, and I was going to install Mint 17 on the new one but decided on Linux Lite 2.0 instead. I have also been using Linux Puppy for a couple of months on my laptop, which motivated me to consider something lighter than Mint for my desktop pc.

Many thanks to the Linux Lite creators!

  WLAN problems
Posted by: zigstum - 06-09-2014, 08:45 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (4)

Hi Smile
I installed LL 1.08 and everything is good other than the wireless LAN connection.
Put simply the available networks are not being listed with the network icon. Only once did the list appear, when I restarted the net service (sudo service network-manager restart), but by the time I had clicked the icon, they had disappeared. The access points are being found as verified by 'sudo iwlist wlan0 scan' which shows many APs including the one I want to connect to. I have tried creating the AP manually, but the status is always connecting, periodically asking for SU password, and AP password, yet always the spinning config anim plays in task bar, yet never connects.
I am running Asus EEEPC 1000HE with the Ath9K driver which seems to be fine. Ifconfig shows all adapters including wlan0, yet no data is transfered or received. I have also tried to connect via CLI using "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid ESSID key s:MYWLANKEY", but I get an error:
"Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument."
I am certain the Wireless Key is correct.
The information on the AP shown with the scan is correct, even giving the strength of signal and the available security.
Can anybody help me work this out?
Thanks in advance Smile

  Another new user

Another new Lite user here. Actually I started off with 1.06 and now using 1.08. I installed 2.0 on an 11 yr old Dell Dimension 2400 that I'm configuring for my sister, and my daughters Dell Latitude (7 yrs old).....no glitches, no bumps, no problems. Since switching over to Linux 5 yrs ago, I have stayed in the stable Debian/Ubuntu line with Ubuntu/Mint/Xubuntu and Bodhi.
I've always been about stability and speed. Lite more than delivers. I can use the GUI for anything I need, and still go to the terminal if I choose.

I don't like to jump on the bandwagon, till I've used and tested a disto over a period of months, and read as much feedback and reviews as I possibly can. Well, I am officially on the bandwagon. Great distro!

Mouse Required to Login (Accessibility Suggestion)
Posted by: Noel Walker - 06-09-2014, 04:11 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (4)

I would like the ability to login to my Linux Lite without having to mouse click the user picture. Purely from an accessibility point of view it would be nice *not* to have to use the mouse to login.

  QtADB for Android
Posted by: AndyOpie150 - 06-08-2014, 11:37 PM - Forum: Tutorials - No Replies

What is QtADB?
QtADB is a pretty cool utility program that allows you to copy/paste any file/folder/zip/apk from your computer to anywhere in your rooted phone or sd card and vice-a-versa. No more pushing and pulling files/folders/zip/apk's with shell commands.

It has a lot more features, but I'll just let you check it out here: http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-t...ost4093175
If you have a rooted Android device and have a ClockworkMod recovery installed this is the utility for you.
Note: You must have the Oracle java6 jdk installed and the Android SDK must be setup properly first. Go here for more info: https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index...opic=445.0

You also need to make a shortcut and put on the desktop if you want quick access to the utility.

You can use a Modified ClockworkMod recovery as long as it's not too modified. TWRP, and the Cannibal Open Touch recoverie's will not work with this utility.

This will allow you to see you phones screen on your computer screen in real time.
For more info go here: http://droid-at-screen.ribomation.com/
This is a stand alone .jar file that you put on the desktop. When you need to use it just right click on the .jar file and select to open with Oracle 6 runtime.
Note: You must have the Oracle java6 jdk installed and the Android SDK must be setup properly first. Go here for setup: https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index...opic=445.0

If you have problems with the setup just ask.
