Lightweight Linux Distros of 2014 - Top 5

Hello!

Has anyone else seen this review? If so, what do YOU think about it?

3. Linux Lite

If you’re both new to Linux and using old hardware, Linux Lite is for you. Containing a taskbar familiar to Windows XP users everywhere, Linux Lite takes speed and combines it with simplicity in perfect fashion. An example of this is their renaming of all major softwares. Rather than having their original, technical names, such as gedit and Rhythm Box, Lite follows a more straight-forward approach for those of you who haven’t used Linux previously; choosing-instead to name them Text Editor and Music Player, so you’re left with little guess-work in choosing the program that best suits your current needs.

However, not to take away from one of the best distros available, bar-none, if you’ve used Linux in the past and have some general knowledge on its usage then it’s probably best to skip this one in favor of those yet to be mentioned. As Lite, while incredible, isn’t quite up to par with the next two on this list.

Lessee... Bodhi uses the Enlightenment Desktop, and Lubuntu 13.10's buggy, with an uncertain future. In MY book, that moves LL to the #1 spot.

Xarchiver crashes or can't find files with [ or ] in their name
Posted by: Alan_uk - 03-19-2014, 07:35 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

Hi. This is a newish install of LL and this is the first time I've used Xarchiver.

1. Just zipped 135 files with 10 errors: "Can't find ........". All the error files have "[" and "]" characters.

2. other folders+subfolders just make Xarchiver abort - no error message, nothing
E.g.  archiving a Wine prefix containing folders: dosdevices and drive_c, and files: .update-timestamp and 3 .reg files. Just aborts. These folders/sub-folders have links in them. Maybe it's trying to follow them?

I've lost confidence in this program already. Is there a better alternative, like WizZip?

There have been many changes across the LTS releases since 12.04.
Here is a look at what Linux Lite based off 14.04 may look like in the future...

  Saving/Importing Bookmarks etc
Posted by: wacazac - 03-19-2014, 04:27 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

Need a bit of help here please before I jump in at the deep end and lose my data  :-[
I am currently dual booting windows xp sp3 and mepis linux (debian based) and would like to go to a single operating system like LL that will run my xp programs and linux but I don't want to lose my bookmarks and contacts/contacts etc.
If I install LL onto the existing linux partitions ie: root/swap/home will it overwrite or preserve the data in the home partition ? If it overwrites the data how can I save it/reinstall it ?
Once I have done this how do I import my bookmarks/contacts etc from xp ? Once this is done it's a simple matter to delete the windows partition and expand the linux partitions to use the whole hdd.
Hope this makes sense, thank in advance for any help  Smile

  Ralink usb wifi issues
Posted by: Dart - 03-18-2014, 06:54 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (7)

LinuxLite user for some time now (got here from old location notice)

Replaced wireless usb from an Alfa - G ... which is Ralink to an Alfa N usb which is also Ralink...
(Ralink Technologies 802.11n usb wireless)

Windows 7 picked it up instantly but I have lost wireless with LL completely.

Don't know how to install these since the inintial LL installation took care of setting up the previous wifi configuration.

There is are 2 included Linux driver tar files one in a folder titled 3070 and the other in a folder titled 2770. No instructions included  :-\

Locked out of my LL install.
Posted by: uxli - 03-18-2014, 08:23 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

My LL 1.0.8 install to hdd has just started asking me to login and I have tried a number of things but am still locked out.

The words were:

Code:
linuxlite xxxx login:

(Where xxxx were some numbers that i do not recall.)

After I type the name I inserted at install time and push enter it asks for my password which I put in and then it just asks me to login again. At present I am working from LL live cd.

This is the first restart after my Menu muckup which was not fixable, so I wonder if more than the Menu has been mucked up...

  Starting over
Posted by: ohjrson - 03-18-2014, 12:47 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

OK Here is whats happening. I had a 32 bit dual processor system that just crashed on me, I think. I have done everything I can think of to try to get it back on but it just won't come back. So I have the Hard drive from that computer on this computer connected by a Sata to USB converter. I can access all the files I need to. I have already baked up or copied my Home folder. What I am looking for now is the files for Thunderbird so that I can get all the e-mails transferred over to the new system, there are certain e-mails and drafts I want to keep. WHere or how do I retrieve them?

Oh yeah and after I do this since it is the bigger HDD I am going to do a complete new install using LL 1.08

Thanks.
Ohjrson
