One default game on Linux Lite
Posted by: MS - 07-23-2019, 08:24 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

If there was to be one default game installed on Linux Lite, just as the distro comes, what would it be, from among those available, to be understood?

Do you think Linux Lite should have any game installed by default at all?

  Performance mode setup
Posted by: MS - 07-23-2019, 08:13 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (4)

Hey [member=2]Jerry[/member], I found THIS page telling how to switch Ubuntu mode of operation into performance orientated, changing from the apparently default powersaving one. I think the program listed at the end - the 'indicator-cpufreq' - could come as default install on the distro, if fully compatible, to help people choose the performance mode more easily. If that makes better sense and does work, that is.

  boot sequence stuck in loop

Hello. I had installed LL on my sister's old Vaio. When trying to boot up, it seems stuck in a loop.
It will show the feather, check speakers, then the screen goes blank.

digging deeper, here's where it's getting stuck

(I hope I typed those right)

I was running 4.4.0-102
with dual boot into windows XP

Thanks!

  browser will not open
Posted by: Searchernow - 07-22-2019, 03:26 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

I was using Brave on this Dell before, now I just get a small blank window for a second then nothing. I did "Restore files [from another LL running Brave] to original locations", so that might have something to do with it...?

https://srvfail.com/brave-browser-fails-...d-profile/  suggests a locked profile. I am not familiar with the command lines referred to but I did try /var/log/messages  but permission denied.

https://github.com/brave/browser-laptop/issues/11829  one poster suggests rm /home/$USER/.config/brave/SingletonLock - I tried this, changing user to my own, but "no such file"

I tried removals, complete removals, re-installs of brave and brave keyring, no luck.  Brave does show in menu/internet.

I know ad-free brave is not encouraged here, but I do donate to LL.

If I knew where the brave profile is on LL, I wonder could I replace it with the one from my other LL 4.x computer, or is it more complicated than that?

I could re-install LL 4 then Restore files, though that might also restore the problem. Anyway I'd prefer not to re-install.

After January 2020, we may see a flood of used laptops for sale ...
Posted by: m654321 - 07-21-2019, 08:17 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (13)

I was just thinking, that when the Win7 end-of-life comes in January 2020, this may be followed by a flood of used laptops for sale, as many are unlikely to be upgradeable to Win10. Hopefully, this will mean rich pickings for those in search of a good deal for an inexpensive laptop for a Linux Lite setup ...  8)

Wifi ok on DVD boot, fails when installed
Posted by: Davide Barranca - 07-20-2019, 11:06 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (2)

Hello,
I have the strangest of problems.
I'm installing Linux Lite on my mother's old laptop: I've burned the 3.8 ISO on a DVD (for the machine doesn't accept USB boot, and it's 32bit) and runned the OS from the DVD: flawless WiFi out-of-the-box.

Partitioning, formatting and installing the OS on the HD brings me a grayed out "Wi-Fi Networks" and "Wi-Fi is disabled by hardware switch" flyout menu. Now, it is true that the HP Compaq Presario CQ60 has a physical button that switches on/off the WiFi, but:

  1. Pushing the button has no effect – it is always retro-illuminated, which should mean it's on
  2. It was retro-illuminated by default when the Linux was running from the DVD anyway

I am a bit puzzled.
In case it helps, I've run inxi -Nn and the result is a Realtek RTL8101/2/6E for Ethernet, and Qualcomm Atheros AR242x / AR542x for the wifi; driver: ath5k; IF: wlp3s0; state: down.

The output of sudo rfkill list is:

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
              Soft blocked: no
              Hard blocked: yes
1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
              Soft blocked: no
              Hard blocked: yes

So, to my newbie eyes, the OS fails to understand that the Wifi is already switched on... maybe? And why hadn't had any problem when running from DVD?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide – please remember that I have zero experience with this stuff Smile

Should I reset the Boot order after installing LL 4.4 with dual Win boot?
Posted by: Mom2Four - 07-20-2019, 03:26 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (1)

Apologies if this is wrong thread. Yesterday installed 1st ever Linux OS (LL 4.4) in a dual boot scenario. Excellent Instructions (thank you jerry + others) online. Kept the old Vista OS. To install I changed the boot order in the PC's BIOS menu (if I said it right) (F2 at startup) to make the 1st 4 boot options the various USB drives (it didn't work with USB Key but one of the other 3 options -  USB HDD or USB FDD or USB CD/DVD - did work), the single HDD was set to be 2nd last and external DVD (which I do not have) last. I see that the startup manager (name?)  in LL 4.4 is different, showing LL and also Win Vista and Win recovery. I have not tried to go into BIOS again (I expect it will be the same?).

QUESTION: Should I change back the boot order in the BIOS? If so, to what? Thanks in advance.
