  Virtualbox updating
Posted by: BarryVG - 07-08-2019, 08:52 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (6)

Saw note that Kernel 5.2 was available and so went ahead and did this.  However, now the Virtualbox setup is not running.  Keep getting an error that says to reinstall the virtualbox-dkms package and then load the kernel module by executing 'modprobe vboxdrv'.
Virtualbox is at version 5, which was installed using the Lite Software install procedure.  I've noted that even though Virtualbox version 6 is available, this is not being updated during regular weekly system updates.  I have previously put in the repositories, but after doing this, nothing seems to work.  Meaning having to unload all my data files, reformat and reload the OS all over again.
What am I missing and any guidance to move forward would be helpful.  Been using LL since version 2.2 and I'm more than pleased with the OS.  But this issue is starting to become irritating.

  kernel boot parameter
Posted by: diskrod - 07-08-2019, 07:07 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

I recently upgraded to a HP laptop and my profile has changed. I'm a novice when it comes to Linux Lite but I'm trying to learn new stuff.  I'm confused about "add the kernel boot parameter" as shown below.  How do I add it? I'm able to get into the terminal and enter the first sudo line but after that I'm lost. Any help is appreciated. I have a slow boot time of six minutes which I'm trying to change with the following:

  • sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Then add the kernel boot parameter: video=SVIDEO-1:d, so it will look like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d"
  • sudo update-grub
  • sudo reboot

What was your first Linux Distro ?
Posted by: bernard stafford - 07-08-2019, 12:46 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (24)

My first Linux Distro was Ubuntu 7.04 [Feisty Fawn] 04/2007.
After that it was 7.10 [Gusty Gibbon] 10/2007 when it first came out.
I have been a Linux enthusiast ever since.

Is my computer 32 bit or 64 bit?
Posted by: thaddeus.slamp - 07-08-2019, 05:25 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (1)

I think my machine is telling programs its a 64 bit architecture when its actually a 32:

I'd like to a) find out/verify, if this is happening, /b) correct it if it is. Often my installation works w/newly installed stuff, but often when it doesn't, this seems to b root. Please help me find out if my machine is a bold-faced liar, /end the problem, if so.

1 example I consider fairly conclusive: When I go to install the latest version of chrome, the web-page basically tells me I have a 64 bit machine, but when I use Gdebi, it says it can't install Chrome because it's AMD 64 which is wrong architecture. Seems to me my computer told the Chrome install page it was 64, but then Gdebi looked into the matter/found its 32.

virtualization suggestions for future Lite Software
Posted by: trinidad - 07-07-2019, 04:13 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (6)

Gnome-Boxes in Lite Software would fit Simple Fast Free nicely, It runs in Deb XFCE and Ubu. I realize it presents some issues but it seems like mostly minor gtk stuff on the interface. It would be a worthwhile addition. VirtualBox is basically junk. New clicker users would find gnome-boxes much easier to use.

How to ask a question for specialized support
Posted by: trinidad - 07-07-2019, 03:09 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (4)

I do not consider the recent dust up here to be of any importance to Linux Lite or the Linux Lite community. I considered replying to Ben's original query myself, but I've always found his posts a bit too obtuse. What I mean by that is, that he made the same mistake a lot of people seeking specialized support do: he did not really define what he was trying to accomplish with the software modification he requested i/e explain why you would want the logout button removed. His claim to be "administering" two machines for a specific charity seemed a worthy pursuit but I have yet to understand his request other than perhaps he wanted the machines to always be shut down when not in use, something that could be accomplished with an entirely different script. Furthermore there is really no need to modify the GUI of lightdm to accomplish what he requested as he could have used policy kit to take away lightdm's permissions to the logout, suspend & hibernate buttons. Questions like Ben's need to have an explanation of why and what is trying to be accomplished attached to them as they are not really "support" questions i/e how to use the base software, something is not working right, updates failed, etc. I have no comment on his character as I do not know him, nor do I have any criticism concerning his behavior or Jerry's. It's none of my business, and has nothing to do with computing. I do find the loss of the original topic a little regrettable as it may have eventually gotten around to the utility Ben was seeking and perhaps I could understand then what he was trying to do and offer some alternative suggestions for the future. Linux Lite and its Forum and growing Community has grown into more of a general community resource and service than we may imagine here, and that is an admirable focus and accomplishment.
"What are you trying to get your computer to do, and why?"

How to shorten boot time. It is taking about 6 minutes or so.
Posted by: noweare - 07-06-2019, 11:24 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (10)

Hello All,
I just installed LL on an old laptop. LL installed fine but it is taking about 6 minutes to boot up. Looking at the boot log shows where the bottle necks are. Maybe someone can point me in the direction of a solution. New to linux.
As you can see I am getting a lot of timed out events. These are just some of them.
