  Installing on Toshiba Netbook
Posted by: Learning - 02-17-2017, 01:45 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (2)

I am installing LL on a Toshiba netbook with 2 gb RAM. It had Windows 7 Starter on it and was in a state of uselessness. I will soon let you know how it goes.

  TurboTax in LinuxLite
Posted by: JonMikelV - 02-16-2017, 12:39 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

Has anybody gotten TurboTax 2016 to work in LL 3.2 (preferably 64 bit) and, if so, how'd you do it?

I've tried following various instructions via console, Winetricks, and PlayOnLinux (all for both Wine v1.8 & 2.0) but I keep running into errors getting .NET 4 (required for TT 2016) to install.

  On-access antivirus options
Posted by: JonMikelV - 02-15-2017, 11:08 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

I've slowly been migrating friends and family to LinuxLite as their Windows (mostly XP) machines fail - most of the time this is due to OS issues caused by spyware, adware, viruses, etc.  It's been going great so far, but now I've run into a situation where I'm moving a user over that historically very much needs an anti-virus solution in place.

So I'm wondering if anybody has suggestions for an on-access (or better, on-write) scanner what will work with LL 3.2.  I've tried the following so far:

  • Sophos (couldn't figure out how to get it it to work - plus it took a ton of memory
  • Comodo (couldn't get it to update due to Application Agent not running)
  • ClamAV (doesn't support on-access)

I'd prefer to get Comodo working, but it seems to have some issues building the RedirFS kernel modules for real-time protection in certain kernels - with the specific error being:
Quote:dereferencing pointer to incomplete type ‘struct nameidata’
  path_put(&nd->path);

My fallback so far is ClamAV with a daily scan - but even that isn't great because it seems to only be able to schedule for a specfiic time, and this user shuts their box down when not in use so it could be days or weeks between ACTUAL scans.  So I guess a secondary question is:
  • Can I tell ClamAV to run at OR FIRST CHANCE AFTER a specific time?

And finally, I'd love to find something that's free or not subscription based (mainly because this user isn't going to pay for it, and I don't want to have to do it for them) - but if that's not viable, what paid options have people used that actually work for them?

Thanks!

Switched to proprietory drivers for Wifi now nothing works
Posted by: demiurge - 02-15-2017, 09:37 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

Like the title said.

I installed LL 2.2 onto an older gateway m520 laptop in order to upgrade it after installation. Installation was flawless with the exception of wireless not working. The wired LAN worked perfectly. And so just before beginning the update process I went into the "additional" software section of "Install drivers" app to see if perhaps a proprietary driver was needed to get the wifi to work.
I did find a listing to switch to the Broadcom wireless driver, and made the switch. The action did not work and I lost the wired connection as well, and have no option to revert the action. can anyone help me figure this out?

  Linux Mint incorrectly installed
Posted by: john9159 - 02-15-2017, 07:06 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (7)

I installed Linux Mint 32 Bit version onto a 64 Bit Presario CQ58 laptop inadvertently and now want to remove it but am baffled that the 64 bit version will not boot up.
Can I remove the 32 bit version and replace it? Keep trying but due to unfamiliarity am struggling.

Thanks

  Installing LinuxLite to Android Tablet?
Posted by: PinStripe - 02-15-2017, 07:02 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

Hey...

Anyone tried installing LinuxLite to an Android tablet? I have a LG G Pad 8 and want to install LinuxLite to it.
I know I have to root the device first and then find a rom. I've never done this before and it's hard to trust
most guys online as they get their jollys helping people screw up their devices. Anyone here have any real
info on this? It would be Very much appreciated!!

  VB Additional errors
Posted by: bitsnpcs - 02-13-2017, 09:36 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (17)

Hello,
I have been following the tutorial in the Help Manual for VB.
I am at the stage of, start>browse to the .iso, for the iso of first virtual machine.
It throws two errors for me
The first was keyboard capture mode is enabled, I unticked this in the VB preferences.

The second is this error -
VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
ConsoleWrap
Interface:
IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}

I have looked in the BIOS "UEFI Bios Utility, Advanced Mode, American Megatrends Version 2.17.1246"
and cannot find any setting mentioning VT-x.
I found VT-d, in the System Agent (SA) Configuration, it said disabled, I enabled this and retried, no change, the same error as above, so have disabled it again.

Could it be called something else in the BIOS other than VT-x ?

How To Dual-Boot Install LinuxLite On a MacBook Pro?
Posted by: PinStripe - 02-12-2017, 08:40 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (10)

Hello,

My friend has an older MacBook Pro (late 2008) and Apple came out with an upgrade to Sierra.
I called Apple yesterday and they told me this laptop is not qualified for any more upgrades.
So, I have been working on my friend for over a year to get him to move to Linux and he is now
keen to the idea.

I've never installed to a Mac computer, let alone dual boot. Can anyone either instruct me on
how to do so or point me in the right direction to find out how to do so? Thanks!
