  Cant install LL 3
Posted by: hadrian - 10-27-2016, 04:18 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (13)

I am trying to install linux lite an a second HDD on my win 10 laptop (SSD). I have followed examples, installing to 2nd internal HDD, with bootloader on sdb. The bios is set in Legacy mode. The installation goes fine. I restart - no grub, windows boots. I boot from the HDD and just a blank screen. What am I doing wrong?

Further thoughts and feedback on Linux Lite, 2.8 and 3.0.
Posted by: Digistylus - 10-24-2016, 12:57 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (10)

It's been nearly a year since I first tried out linux, and a short while later tried linux lite 2.8 and liked it quite well. So well that not too long after I installed it on 2 computers, an older workhorse (Core2Quad, 8gig ram, GT 730 GPU) converted into a media PC, and a business grade laptop (HP elitebook 8440p, i5, 4gig ram).

At the time of this writing, I'm setting up LL 2.8 on 2 more computers, thinkcenter sff desktops (m72e i5 3.10ghz, 8gig ram and an m81 pentium G620 2.6ghz , 4gig ram). Bottom line: I like LL 2.8, and it has become my go-to installation for an OS. So far it has been 99.999% bulletproof OS for a small office\home office machine, for a 2D graphics work machine, for a media pc, and for a Steam on linux machine.

The few issues that IMO still needs ironing seems to stem from ubuntu itself or xfce, not really from Linux Lite itself. And most of those issues to me are not major function types, but small quality of life type issues. Things like screen tearing that AFAIK stems from xfce, which thankfully I found a fix with compton thanks to the LL forum, but in terms of "ready to go out of the box" something like that xfce screen tearing is not very noob friendly. And I'm saying that as someone who prefers xfce as my first choice for a desktop environment and distros that uses xfce.

On a laptop, some of the small quality of life issues (afaik stems from ubuntu) iirc are or were the battery indicator not displaying properly until it enters and exits suspend mode, having to fix a brightness setting memory (sysvinit backlight iirc). Again not necessarily show stopping but those things do make an impression for a potential new linux user especially if they are coming from primarily Windows based. But to say it again, aside from those quality of life issues, LL 2.8 IMO in general is good to go, period.

On to LL 3.0, I have tried it out for a few weeks now and I have it ready on a DVD install disk. Right now however, 2.8 is still what I use, I'll explain why. First off what IMO LL 3.0 got it bang on and on the right track:
-Better Hidpi options support. Likely not noticeable for most regular desktop usage, but becomes important for a media pc usage, with UI scaling, legibility and usability. Two big thumbs up on LL 3.0 bringing the improvement and options on this!
-Lite Software looks better with the icons versus just text. While I was never that uncomfortable going with text terminal installation, Lite Software is just easier to use for new people or people who just want to get things to work and go.
-Major function wise, my experience with it so far is smooth and no hiccup. I'm not sure if ubuntu fixed it on their end but personally I have yet to experience any problems with wifi connection setups I've heard other people had encountered.

On to the points on why I am on 2.8 for now, until 3.0\ubuntu 16.04\xfce addresses it.
-Screen tearing. It might not be a huge deal for some people but it's just too annoying for me, and becomes a deal breaker when using it for a media machine. I tried the enabling compositor and synchronize vertical blank fix, it was a no-go. Installing compton fixed the screen tearing, but seems to mess up the update process somehow. As soon as I find a fix for this, 3.0 is going on my main personal machine.
-Not a deal breaker but I do miss the convenience of Lite Control Center, I can probably just put "system information" and "resource usage" on the taskbar or panel, but personally I like the idea of a  one button convenience display. Without beating a dead horse it's unfortunate things do not work out and I guess sometimes it's just best to move on. If the LL team are planning something to replace it, I'll just say this, it might be useful to have a convenience button that displays:
-whether a system is up to date, update now (y/n)
-a basic system spec such as OS ver, kernel version, cpu, RAM total and usage, storage total and usage.
-Linux Lite help manual, and Linux Lite website link .

TL;DR: LL 2.8 is still awesome, and as soon as I find a fix for that screen tearing, LL 3.0 will be installed on my main machine. Linux Lite is what convinced me that Linux is getting ever closer to be "Year of the Linux Desktop". To the Linux Lite team, I say this sincerely. Please continue to keep doing what you're doing, you are doing great work and a much needed one.

  Much easier than Windows
Posted by: thoughtinstinct - 10-23-2016, 09:32 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (4)

In my process of learning LL,  i have started installing it on my friends computers ( i pity my friends who regard me as a computer expert ). I installed LL 2.8 on a 55 yr old's computer and his first reaction was "This program is much easier than windows" so i just wanted to let the guy(s) behind LL know you are doing an amazing job.

You have made it easy for a lot of people to be able to comfortably and securely use there computers without much hassle so a big thank you from me and my friends.

  Linux Lite 3 32-bit or 64-bit
Posted by: hughparker1 - 10-22-2016, 07:49 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (4)

I have been using various linux distros for a couple of years now but still consider myself to be a newbie. I have several laptops/PCs each with multi-boot OS as I am still investigating the different distros out there.  Initially I didn't install LL because it always liked to be in charge of the grub menu but after using it I soon realised that even though is was extremely light on resources it was fully functional.  I now think LL is currently one of the best distros out there.

I have now successfully installed LL3 64-bit on two older BIOS laptops which both had 4GB RAM
DELL Vostro 1520 Intel Core2 Duo T6670  ............................................ (bought 2010)
Sony Vaio Intel Core2 Duo T9400 & NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT ............ (bought 2009)

Both are running very well indeed.

I have a couple of questions and would appreciate any advice/guidance ...

Q1. I was recently asked to install linux on an old SAMSUNG NC10 Netbook with only 1 GB of RAM so I was thinking I might install  LL3 32-bit as I read on-line that 32-bit might be better than 64-bit for laptops with only 1GB RAM.  Would 32-bit be a good choice?
EDIT: I just found out that the processor for the SAMSUNG NC10 is i386 so 32-bit is my only choice here, but still not sure which would be best for the ASUS EEE-BOX see below, any advice would be appreciated.

Q2. I also have an old ASUS EEE-BOX Dual core Intel Atom D525, Graphics NVIDIA GT218 [ION] with 4 GB RAM bought 2011.  The processor is not very fast although the grapics card is not too bad.  It currently runs OpenELEC very well indeed.  Would you recommend LL3 64-bit for this install?

Linux Lite - perfect for the casual user
Posted by: Golan2072 - 10-22-2016, 01:08 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

I find Linux Lite perfect for the casual user - far better than Windows and somewhat better (in my opinion) than Ubuntu MATE - my other favorite Linux distro.

The casual user is a person - such as my fiancee, my mother, or several of my friends, who uses the computer for internet browsing, basic office applications, and watching (or playing) media. These people seldom (or never) play proper non-browser games on their computer and do not use specialized work software. As you can now do almost anything from your browser, this represents a pretty good number of people.

For them, Linux Lite is perfect. It is lightweight and allows full functionality on very old and limited hardware. It is stable and works smoothly with almost no crashes or bugs as common to Windows on old computers and sometimes on newer ones. It comes front-loaded with pretty much everything you need to use the computer - these users only need to install Restricted Extras and probably also Chromium and Kodi, and that's it. Like all Ubuntu-based distros I know, this is essentially zero-maintenance - no need to run defrag, anti-virus, malware scans, ccleaner and so on, and no need for individual application updates - updating is easy and automatic and updates everything. It runs Chromium, Libre Office, and Kodi perfectly even on old laptops. It even does not have the few bugs Ubuntu MATE has, such as the Flash issue in Chromium.

Once installed, it simply works. I have installed it on 6 computers so far, 4 of them laptops, and it works perfectly on all of them for quite a time now with no bugs or crashes. Some have antiquated and/or weak hardware, but Linux Lite still works well on them.

Better than expensive and inefficient propriety operating systems which do not work well on older computers or even on simpler new ones.

  Greetings from Israel
Posted by: Golan2072 - 10-22-2016, 12:10 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (4)

Hi,

My name is Omer Golan-Joel and I am a 34-years-old freelance translator and editor from Yavne, Israel. I discovered Linux last spring and fell in love with it, first using Ubuntu Unity - which I found to be cumbersome to my taste - then Ubuntu MATE and Linux Mint and now Linux Lite. I Find Linux Lite to be the fastest, most stable, and most complete distro I have tried so far. It has no bugs - unlike Ubuntu MATE - and comes front-loaded with most software I need.

I have brought to life a number of old computers using Linux Lite (and Ubuntu MATE). They had Windows XP or Windows 7 and were virtually unusable. With Linux Lite they run very well! Even my old ACER Aspire One netbook with its particularly weak Atom CPU.

I still run Windows 7 64bit on my main computer as I need very specific functions of MSOffice in my work which do not work in Libre Office (there are still issues with change tracking and some complex PowerPoint presentations do not work well after being saved in LibreOffice. On my laptops I run Linux Lite, and once these functions will work well on LibreOffice I will move my main computer to it as well. I have also installed Linux Lite on the computers of several family members and friends and they are very pleased with it.

16.04 sad release in my experience and from what I've read many others also
Posted by: Dookus - 10-22-2016, 02:21 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

I have tried other flavours with the 16.04 kernel and all have been absolutely sad, system lock ups, system acting like it has a memory leak, constant reboots to get performance back to something less than woeful, even then it's slow.

Just installed LL 2.8 on one machine that has been not used since I got sick of the way it was performing (Laptop) and it's back to what I would expect, so Monday I'll try doing the same to 2 desktops that I have in the workshop that both have been acting like they may have some hardware problem, tried Linux Mate (16.04 kernel) no performance improvement, one of these machines should be kick ass, although several years old a Q6600 with a mid rang GPU and 4 gig ram should go very well on a lite weight Linux distro?!

Am I the only one?
