  Hi
Posted by: banko - 12-29-2014, 07:57 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (16)

Just a quick hello from a snowy and cold Derbyshire.

I've been on Linux for about 6 years, the last 3 or 4 on Peppermint, which is excellent.

I've tried loads of distros but Peppermint has always been my main one, but trying LL 2.2 that might change.

I'm totally Windowless Smile and now have LL duel booted with Peppermint. So flip flopping between the 2.

Look forwarding to contributing.

Hello everyone from South Wales. Here's hoping that everyone has had a great Christmas. Have heard quite a bit about Linux Lite 2.2 so i thought i'd give it a try out on my USB flash drive and if everything works out i would then do a full hard drive install. Thanks

Wrong keyboard layout at login screen
Posted by: ruffieux - 12-28-2014, 09:28 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - No Replies

Hi,

I sucessfully installed Linux Lite 2.2 on my old HP Laptop recently. I set all languages and keyboard settings to Swiss German and everything works just great with one exception: At the login screen I still seem to  have the american keyboard layout ( z and y changed).

As I said, once logged in, all applications work as desired. Can anybody help me with this?

Otherwise great work guys!! Much faster than original Ubuntu on this laptop.

Thanks a lot

Heinz

  [SOLVED] Broken Audio System
Posted by: Yoru3 - 12-27-2014, 04:51 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (9)

Looks like I've broken my Linux Lite audio system.
What I did was

sudo apt-get install grilo-plugins-0.2
sudo apt-get install rhythmbox

Which worked great on lubuntu 14.1 LXDE  (after installing missing basics gcc, make and samba).
Got it playing music from a Windows XP based Twonky media server.

But I tried the same thing on Linux Lite, I found I'd lost the sound.
So I removed the grilo plugin and rhythmbox.

But now, when vlc is invoked on a terminal, I get the following

VLC media player 2.1.4 Rincewind (revision 2.1.4-0-g2a072be)
[0x9ebf6c8] pulse audio output error: PulseAudio server connection failure: Timeout
[0x9e378f8] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve property `GtkRange::activate-slider' of type `gboolean' from rc file value "((GString*) 0xb010aab0)" of type `GString'
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve property `GtkRange::activate-slider' of type `gboolean' from rc file value "((GString*) 0xb010aab0)" of type `GString'
[0x9f98310] main playlist: stopping playback
ALSA lib pulse.c:243Sadpulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Timeout

[0x9ebf6c8] alsa audio output error: cannot open ALSA device "default": Connection refused
[0x9ebf6c8] main audio output error: module not functional
[0xaf46f3f0] main decoder error: failed to create audio output

When the VLC window finally appears and I try and play, get the following in VLC error window

Audio output failed:
The audio device "default" could not be used:
Connection refused.

Not sure what the best way forward is now.
I'd like to get vlc, pulseaudio and alsa working again, without distroying the Linux Lite.
But I'd also like to get rhythmbox working on Linux Lite with the grilo plugin, to get the same link up with the Twonky server, as is possible with lubuntu.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After flirtations with other distros, Linux Help Guy has come back to Linux Lite for his daily machine, but using MX-14 and Debian on other machines.

Quote: Hi all so I have settled on Linux Lite 2.2 for 2015 after a few issues with Ubuntu Mate Linux Lite has come to the rescue.

I kinda look at MX-14 as the Debian Stable version of Linux Lite.

  Asus GL551JM backlit keyboard
Posted by: technomancer - 12-26-2014, 05:31 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

Does anyone have information on how to get the KEYBOARD backlight working on this darn thing ?
I understand it is software driven. I had the idea of just wiring the leds to a 5v or 3.3v header on the
MB, but would prefer not to. I could just wire in a switch to turn it down with a resistor in line i guess
But a driver would be ideal. 8)

  Nvidia 860m
Posted by: technomancer - 12-26-2014, 05:22 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (13)

I just got the Asus ROG GL551JM, Intel I7, and Nvidia 860m with Optimus.
I installed LM 17.1 as a test to see if i would have problems with installing
LinuxLite. So far it has worked except for the locking up randomly until full performance
mode is enabled in The Nvidia profiler.
-Question, does Linux Lite have any definitive solution to get the Nvidia Optimus
working correctly?
- Smile I did have the idea of adding the System76 repos/Nvidia packages
and trying it out but would love to hear if anyone else has tried it. System76 apparently
has no issues at all running optimus, just wondering if the Asus hardware would be compatible
with System76 drivers.

Specs--
Asus ROG GL551JM, 17"
Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz)
16GB Memory 1TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB
1920 x 1080
Windows 8.1 64-Bit <------yeah right ! Linux Forever ! Thank you Steam for finally coming around and supporting Linux.

Google Drive, where are you ?
Posted by: technomancer - 12-26-2014, 05:09 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

So I have decided that I wanted to use Google drive on all of my PC's, Linux, Windoze, and on my cell phones.
Guess what, there is no official package that actually works AND has a gui. what the hell? After doing some research
I found that Google has no plans to either, they have one developer, who cant get it right and thats it! Apparently
it has been all but abandoned. So I have been using the Web page for Google drive, which works, but isn't
a reliable mode to upload at the moment.(large files). So i think Dropbox will be my new "Cloud storage", I only use
Google drive for Linux ISO's, and files that are 100% legal to put it one way, LOL.
Does anyone have information on Google drive on Linux, or is it a lost cause? :-\
