ways to "harden" linux lite? few thoughts and questions. |

moved from xp/microsoft recently and knew a lot about where logs and such files were hidden inside their system and the many tools used to help its security. does not seem to be nearly as much information on securing linux and it seems to be a out of the box system, but are their ways to make it more secure or stop various logging it may contain?
and seeing that this is based after ubuntu is it safe to assume to has the exact same security? less because it is not as popular and or more likely to contain unseen bugs? or more because it was made liter and may have removed unneeded services?
and does the idea hold truth that ubuntu is considered a relitively easy but not as secure as debian? just some thoughts from someone who is leaving microsoft behind along with vast amount of software it needed to keep logs and security in place.
thanks for anyones time who wants to entertain these thoughts!

Installing and Using Themes and Icons in LL |

[NOTE]: I'm posting this thread for those new to theming and/or for those who've never thought of theming their LL/XFCE desktop. I recommend checking out XFCE-Look or GNOME-Look for themes and icons that you may want to try out in this tutorial. I'll be using the MediterraneanNight theme for this series. (You'll understand later.)
First and foremost, we have to create two new folders in our user's directory. This can be found as soon as you open the File Manager [Thunar is the default file manager for Linux Lite, so that's what we'll be using here]. First, click View at the top of the page, and then click "Show Hidden Files". This will allow us to see the new folders we will be creating. Next, you'll want to right-click anywhere in the file manage, and choose "Create Folder". Name the first ".icons". This will be where you'll place downloaded icon themes. Next, create another folder, and name this one ".themes". This will be where you'll places your alternate themes.
![[Image: FtWQh4U.png?1]](http://i.imgur.com/FtWQh4U.png?1)
This is what your folders will look like. Notice the ".icon" folder in the top-left, and ".themes" in the bottom-right.
For the next part, we'll need to get an alternate theme. I went to GNOME-Look and picked up the Mediterranean Night theme set because it includes the darker version of the standard theme (MediterraneanWhite for Appearence, MediterraneanNight for Window Manager) of Linux Lite. Find a theme you like and download it, or you can follow along with this tutorial and grab the MediterraneanNight Series from the link provided above.
Once downloaded, check your Downloads folder as it will be there (unless you've designated a different target folder for the download to go to. In that case, go to that folder instead).
![[Image: FQjitrJ.png?1]](http://i.imgur.com/FQjitrJ.png?1)
My Downloads folder, containing the "MediterraneanNight-2.03.tar.gz" file.[i]
Next step is to right-click your downloaded file (.tar,.tar.bz, etc.) and select "Extract Here". In this example, I get approximately 12 new folders, each being a different variation of the MediterraneanNight Series theme. To make things easy on us, we'll want to look to the left panel where it lists our "Places". Right-click on your username, and select "Open in New Tab". You should now see Downloads and USERNAME tabs above your files, like so:
![[Image: 0gLsXp9.png?1]](http://i.imgur.com/0gLsXp9.png?1)
In order for your computer to be able to use the theme files, you'll need to move them over to the .themes. Right-click and copy the theme files that appeared when you extracted the compressed file (in my case, MediterraneanNight-2.03.tar.gz). Next, go to your user tab (mine is l337n1nj4 in the pic above), navigate to the .themes directory, and Paste them into the folder. You should now be able to use these themes for your panel and window manager!
Here's the easiest part. Open the Menu, go to Settings, and click Appearance. This will give you a window that will list all of the themes available to use (including the ones you just dropped into the ".themes" directory). Select which one you'd like to use, and then click Close at the bottom when you're finished.
To change the Window Border at the top to match the rest of your window and panel, click on the Menu, click Settings, and then scroll down and click Window Manager. Choose a style from the list, and then click Close when finished. That's all!

[i]My window using MediterraneanDark for the Appearance and MediterraneanNight for the Window Manager
To install a new icon theme and use it, do the same as above. Download the icon theme from your choice website, extract it's contents, and move the contents to the ".icons" folder. This time, however, you'll want to choose the Icons tab in Appearance, as shown below.
![[Image: szhmIk3.png?1]](http://i.imgur.com/szhmIk3.png?1)
You can then choose which icon theme to use and click Close when finished. You've now officially themed Linux Lite to your own personal taste, good job! ;D
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to comment on this thread and I (or someone else) will be happy to help you!

I got a hand-me-down eee from my Mom who needed to get off unsupported winXP. LM XFCE was my first choice, but I couldn't get the wifi working. So tried this distro instead.
Nice work - I'm surprised this distro is so low ranking on distrowatch - should be higher.

Holding back the base-files package |

It seems some people are getting confused whilst upgrading, when faced with the following options:
Code: Configuration file '/etc/issue'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** issue (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?
Configuration file '/etc/lsb-release'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.

This can be quite destructive as it effects the way your computer boots.
In the next version of Linux Lite I'm looking at holding back this package, in the meantime to do this open a terminal:
Code: sudo apt-mark hold base-files

Hi, my name is Alberto Boschini and I am a newbie here. I just have installed Lite last friday night and I am trying to learn as much as I can. Once I have done this, I would like to offer all the help I can to people who, like me, will start to walk this way.
I like it a lot. I know I have not seen much yet, but I am pretty sure I will shortly, and as I said, I am willing to learn as much as I can. Love this thing!
Thanks. Hope to hear from you people soon,
Cheers,
Alberto

Hi there! My real name is Ray, but you can call me either Ninja or Ray (I like both). Been a Linux user for about three years now, and was a distro hopper for 99% of that time. Tried Linux Lite out after noticing it on www.distrowatch.com and figured I'd give it a go after finding Debian 7 XFCE to not suit my needs. Installed LL via USB a couple days ago and have been loving it ever since!
Once again, hello and I hope to get a chance to talk to everyone soon! ;D

[SOLVED] Chrome asks for keyring when starting |

Hey LL Team, new user here! First, let me say that I love LL! Soooo aesthetically appealing and friendly! Couldn't be happier with 2.0!
So, here's my small problem (more of an annoyance, but enough for me to come to the forums for help).
This doesn't occur every time I start up Chrome, but seems to happen more frequently when I restart or start up my laptop. I access Google Chrome from the Whisker Menu, and while it's booting up, a prompt pops up asking me to unlock the keyring. It won't allow me to use Chrome unless I pop my password into the prompt. Tried searching the internet for a solution to the problem, but so far, can only find solutions involving older (around v10.10) versions of Ubuntu, or entering System>Preferences, which I can not find via the Whisker Menu search. Is there any way for me to stop this from happening?
Thank you to anyone and everyone who can help me solve this issue.

Tor Browser... |

Noobie here! I'm a big fan of Linux Lite since April 2014 and have been using 2.0 on all of our machines since June (Hoping that this is the forum to ask this question, so bear with me). Everything has been fantastic, until the last major update late, last week. After the update, all of the machines have the Ubuntu 14.04 splash screen. Not really a big deal, however, we keep getting an error when we try to fire up the Tor Browser. It appears to start up and then nothing. When we try to open it again, we get a pop up window that says: Firefox is already running, but not responding...
I go into the task manager to close it, but, same problem when we try to reopen it. The only way to get it working is to restart the machine. has anyone else here run into this problem? and what did you do to correct it?
Thanks in advance!
Butelo
