  Virtualbox no longer starts......
Posted by: kjacobs - 07-25-2014, 04:27 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (7)

Hi group.....I am getting the following error when I try to start my Win XP virtualbox now. This was working just last week and now fails. I have tried running the vboxdrv setup, but it is not found....even after installing DKMS. Any ideas to get this working again.....my business books are on that vbox and need to get at them.

Thanks,
Ken

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

  Linux Lite 1.0.8 Important Update
Posted by: Valtam - 07-25-2014, 07:29 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (7)

Firstly, thank you to Scott for bringing this to my attention.

Linux Lite 1.0.8 was release with the HWE - Hardware Enablement Stacks which includes the 3.8 kernel.
Support for the kernel and the graphics drivers end on Aug 8, 2014. This means that you will no longer receive kernel or graphics updates for 1.0.8, but you will continue to receive the rest of your systems updates. As the kernel is a core component of your system, we strongly advise that you proceed in the following manner.

Open a terminal and do:

Code:
sudo apt-get install bzr -y
cd ~
bzr co --lightweight  lp:~mvo/update-manager/hwe-support-status
cd hwe-support-status
./hwe-support-status --verbose

This tool will check your system and report back with the advised update procedure. For example, you may get a message that says the following:

Code:
To upgrade to a supported (or longer supported) configuration:

* Upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS by running:
sudo do-release-upgrade

OR

* Install a newer HWE version by running:
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty linux-image-generic-lts-trusty

and reboot your system.

I would recommend the second option of doing: sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty linux-image-generic-lts-trusty as I have no idea how the command of sudo do-release-upgrade will effect each persons system. More information can be found here - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/1204_HWE_EOL

To be perfectly honest, a more risk-free and smarter option would be to back up all your data first and install a fresh copy of Linux Lite 2.0

  Ubuntu 12.04 can't boot after hardware support update
Posted by: crunch182 - 07-24-2014, 06:32 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (6)

Re from previous post:  https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index...;topicseen

As prior mentioned in the link above I relatively installed a hardware support update through the update manager in Ubuntu 12.04 and since then have been unable to access the OS, at all but continually use LL and WinXP.

I pointed out that I could boot into the non-GUI ttyl version of Ubuntu but am unable to figure how to get into the lovely GUI version I like.

I have tried using the Boot Repair utility (as suggested on the official Ubuntu forums) and have had no luck, I also tried deleting the new kernel but that didn't work either.

This was the output I received from Boot Repair:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/7837640/

FYI, this supposed hardware output was released for the following reason, if you care to read the Ubuntu webpage - I can kind of being careless and lazy didn't really follow to reading it as understanding that it was hardware support I made the conclusion it had to be good.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/1204_HWE_EOL

When I deleted the newest Ubuntu kernel I used the synaptic package manager and looked under kernels and went to the most recent of these.  I should state that upon using the Boot Repair utility that LL controls the grub whereas it was Ubuntu previously.

If you have any questions or need more info just tell me, I'll try get back to you as soon as I can.

Finally, I do appreciate all comments, suggestions and solutions guys so thanks.

  [SOLVED] No Sound (Forum Search Done)
Posted by: Colicos - 07-24-2014, 05:58 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (3)

Yesterday, my laptop worked great with sound. Today, it has no sound at all. I've made no changes that I know of since last successful audio use.

I have looked at the information found here: https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index...opic=574.0

It does not appear to be my volume keys on the keyboard and I also verified that all audio levels are set to 100 through the sound settings. As music is played,  I can see the sound bar moving up and down as if it recognizes the audio.

It seems like it just stopped working. Anyone have any ideas why this happened and how to get sound back on? Thanks!

  Shutdown Hangs on Installed System (V2.0-32 bit)
Posted by: then70 - 07-24-2014, 04:50 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (7)

I installed V2 on a HP Pavilion ze4610US laptop (768 megs of ram & 40 Gig HD).  The lappy runs pretty well.  However, the unit will not shut down properly.  I get circles of green and red on a black background with an indicator bar near the middle of the screen.  I can see movement on the bar, but after going about 20% of the way across--it hangs.  I tried pressing the enter key multiple times, but nothing.  The only way to shut down the computer is to hold the power button down until the screen goes black.

When I click restart instead of shutdown, I get a black screen with Gray and white outline of a small feather or multicolored circles that looks like a bulls-eye and the progress bar stops at 20-25%.  When pressing the down arrow key, these messages appear on the screen:

Quote: wait-for-state stop/waiting
* Stopping rsync daemon rsync
* speech-dispatcher disabled; edit .etc/default/speech-dispatcher
* VirtualBox Additions disabled, not in a Virtual Machine
* Asking all remaining processes to terminate...
* All processes ended within 300 seconds...
[ 5722.745921]

After the bracketed number above there were 3 or 4 other words, but since the screen blacked out I couldn't get them.  But computer still had not shut down.  All the lights were still lit.  I have tried the above several times and it doesn't have the same message every time.  It is always a little different.  But the machine never shuts down or reboots.

The MD5SUM of the downloaded iso is correct and I verified the CD burn against the downloaded iso file.  I have used the same CD to load 2 other laptops and a desktop machine with no problems.

Following the instructions on another post, here is the output of "inxi -Fxz" from the Terminal:

  Customize Whisker Menu buttons
Posted by: anon222 - 07-24-2014, 08:49 AM - Forum: Scripting and Bash - Replies (9)

This is really interesting, if  anyone wants to experiment.
I figured out how to customize whisker menu buttons.
First enable compositing, then edit .gtkrc-2.0 and add this:
#.gtkrc-2.0
#Whisker

    style "darkback"
    {
          engine "pixmap"
            {

                    }
                    image
                    {
                            function                = BOX
                            recolorable            = TRUE
                            state                  = PRELIGHT
                            file                    = "hover.png"
                            border                  = { 1, 1, 1, 1 }
                            stretch                = FALSE
                    }
                    image
                    {
                            function                = BOX
                            recolorable            = TRUE
                            state                  = ACTIVE
                            file                    = "hover.png"
                            border                  = { 1, 1, 1, 1 }
                            stretch                = FALSE
                    }
            }
            bg[NORMAL] = "#404040"
            bg[ACTIVE] = "#606060"
            bg[PRELIGHT] = "#808080"
            fg[NORMAL] = "#ccc"
            fg[ACTIVE] = "#fff"
            fg[PRELIGHT] = "#fff"
    }
    widget "whiskermenu-window*" style "darkback"
#end of file

Save this image to your home folder and rename it to hover.png
[Image: qJkQfSb.png]
log out and then back in, and see what happpens with whisker.

Next: Instead of using only one hover.png try using 2 different
For PRELIGHT use hover.png and for ACTIVE hover1.png
Adwaita gtk2 theme works great with this.
